I have to thank you for all the knowledge you have shared. For without these tutorials and walkthroughs I would not have been able to replace the timing chains in my own ‘10 v6 explorer sport trac, by myself, without ever tackling a job as big as pulling an engine from anything else before. Even after going to my usual shop they said, “You’d be better off running it until it blows”. You saved me the loss of a long revered truck that’s always been around when I needed it. Through all 4 seasons, 260,000+miles strong! And sure to be many more, thank you very much for everything.

I wanted to say thank you very much for the 4 videos for repairing the timing chain on a Ford 4.0. I've never done anything like this job but I was suddenly faced with a broken down vehicle that was going to cost a small fortune to get repaired. I was about ready to junk the Explorer when I came across your videos by God's providence. After watching all 4 several times I told my wife that I was going to take on the job of repairing it. After nearly 6 weeks the job was done and ready to install. I would have like to have seen a reinstallation video with all the torque specs and sequences but I wound up buying a Factory Service manual and slowly working my way through the reinstallation. Everything works perfectly though I did wind up having to replace the Idler Pulley, Water Pump, Steering Pump and several other parts along the way as well as chasing the threads on the plugs and rewiring the Throttle Position Sensor due to a mouse having set up it's home in my car while I was waiting to get all the parts in. I put all of it back together and it runs beautifully. Thank You for posting this and other videos which I will watch just to learn more. May the Lord Bless you and your work many times over. Oh, I bought the timing set off of Amazon and the first one I received was broken, got another one and when I finally got to the point of timing it I was past the return window. It sat 5mm to low to align with the Cam for timing. I used a shim to raise it to the right height and the timing came out perfect. I think I would have bought the more expensive tool had I known the problems I'd have with this one.

Great work, recommendation for beginners like myself are to show all the tools (shopping list) needed in the beginning (Sizes, types that make it easier), I ended up going to harbor freight a few times around $400 in tools I needed for this job, and around $400 in oil, shop supplies, parts. My timing parts exploded at 200k miles on a 06 Explorer 4.0 v6 4x4 Eddie Bower. I ended up doing this alone and took me about 5 days total having never done this type of work ever. First engine pull and first time doing a timing job. Thanks to you it’s back on the road good as new and saved some money. I used Amazon, Rock Auto, Harbor Freight, Walmart, Lowe’s Hardware for the timing parts/tools needed. Good Luck and patience is needed for this job.

I had a 4.0 Explorer. I drove it 100k miles with the rattle before I sold it. I changed the oil every 5k. The guy that bought it still drives it and has done nothing to it. In my opinion an excellent engine with nice that’s pretty peppy for its age. Very reliable if taken care of.

I have a 2006 mustang I bought brand new from ford with this engine. Changed oil with mobile 1 every 2k miles like clock work and at 90k the rear chain was rattling like crazy. Could not believe it!!! This car was well taken care of with all fluids whether it needed it or not. I always thought changing fluids more was a cheap insurance policy to extend life on my car. My machanic said it was better to get a new engine from jasper then repair it. I did that and it cost me 6k for the job!!! He did beautiful work and it was done right but no engine should have to b replaced with less than a 100k miles on it period!! I still have the car and nothing else has gone bad and it runs great. What a learning curve. Shame on ford!! By the way I went to ford they heard the rattling and gave me the same price for a new motor or he wanted to sell me a new car

I have literally been waiting for a how-to video like this for years. It's been my experience that the late 2004 4.0 SOHC engines and up in the Ford Ranger don't have this problem, but if you buy a 2001-early 2004 Ranger with the 4.0 SOHC there's a 75% chance that the timing chain cassettes have disintegrated into the engine and you have some big problems.

A good way to relieve fuel pressure to avoid spraying it everywhere is to pull the fuel relay and then turn the engine over a few times. You can drain the line from the fuel filter which is quick and easy or from where you are taking it apart.

I recommend keeping the hoist chain to the equalizer as short as possible. Noting worse than reaching the end of your ram and still can't clear the vehicle. I also keep all castors on jacks and hoists lubricated with motorcycle chain lubricant. You would be surprised how much that improves their operation and maneuverability.

Yup I agree, I have had a few engines max out and couldn't clear the vehicle to be removed. On this one though the chain is so thick that the cross bolt only fits on an end link not a middle link otherwise all of that slack would have been removed.

    • @ShainAndrews
      @ShainAndrews 6 лет назад

@@FordTechMakuloco Oh yeah, I remember having that very same issue. I think I swapped the bolt out with one that would fit between the links. Used a grade 8. Also remember getting the bolt through an alternate link was challenging to say the least. I did that early on, and never had a reason to lengthen it back out. I'd be tempted to cut the links off, but you know as soon as I do that I'll need the length for something.

My ford ranger requires a timing chain job. The passenger side cassette has gone out and the ranger rattle is getting bad. Do you recommend getting the Ford factory chain, sprocket and cassettes or is there an after market set that is better?
    Great series, I enjoyed it.

If i's rattling, it is most likely going to involve a job like this. Mine rattles at startup a few months back and that was a secondary tensioner. I was relieved then. Now, it's an engine pull and chain/tensioner replace. This is a great series that Brian has done!

The main thing you should worry about is the transmission, if it's an automatic. If it's never had fluid and filter changes on the transmission, YOU MAY OR MAY NOT want to change them now. It depends on how badly worn the transmission is. If you have a manual transmission, I wouldn't worry about anything until you have trouble shifting/clutch wears out.
The 3.0 Vulcan is a very reliable engine, quite a bit different from the 4.0 SOHC

Only thing to look out for as far as critical failure is concerned is your cam synchronizer. If it fails it will take out the oil pump and kiss that engine goodbye.. They will make a pronounced chirping noise when they are on their way out.. Easy to replace and a cheap part.. As far as leaks go, the front timing cover has a coolant passage on the passenger side top, and it commonly it will blow out the timing cover seal.. Rear main seals like any engine will go with time, as water pumps.. But these parts are very cheap on these engines and easy enough for a DIY repair assuming you have a good set of tools.. On my second 3.0l Vulcan engine (sold my last one to buy a truck with a manual trans) last one held up to a ton of abuse and after replacing head gaskets/water pump/timing cover gasket it still ran like a top no issues with over 300,000km on the clock ended up selling it a year ago and the new owner has had it about a year with no further repairs needed (besides maintenance ie: oil changes) These engines make very little power and have crummy fuel consumption but they are cheap, reliable, and extremely loyal standing up to abuse

Looking forward to this. Interesting point u make about why to pull the engine and not just the trans. U mentioned construction in another answer. Working on your shop? It looks real nice. All the vids r great. But some of my favorite r when your pulling the dashes inside cars. Some great tricks. U really have us covered!

Core support is just spot-welded in...getting ready to swap my engine for a fresh before I supercharge it. Thinking the front clip is going to come off and reinstall the core support with welded nuts or nutserts. Easier access for future mods.
Good video, didn't think it would be too difficult but every time I look at that cramped engine bay I have a small anxiety attack. lol

Another quick tip for pulling any engine which has worked for me is loosening the rear trans mount bolts so the trans can scoot a bit back making it way easier to remove and install the engine to mate the 2 assemblies together. Dunno just the way I have done it. See if it works for u

These 4.0's rangers and v6 e150s didnt make it far in our fleet, majority had some kind of tick or knock before 70k miles, now those 4.9 straight six's in our old f150s where unkillable beasts.

My 93 4.0 v6 just started ticking this year, (very faint on startup) ,after 4 years of letting it sit for weeks/ months between starts. Stopped tracking the miles in 2000 had over 250,000 on it then. Has to be a 500,000 now, odo days 59,000 so 559,000 miles. its 2wd and manual trans too. Kinda scared to get another truck even a Tacoma would be tough to outlive the ranger. (and kill my bank account) Many vehicles have come & past over the years with the intent ro replace it, but none outlive the ranger!. currently a dead CRV in the driveway, AND an 8th gen civic-- dead at 99,000 miles! probably just a starter, but STILL..... The ranger still fires right up. Every time.

First, I have to say thank you for giving us years of advice and excellent helpful information. You may not realize it, but you are helping some of us more than you can even imagine so personally I want to say thank you. I find myself here today because I have a 2007 Ford Explorer 4.0 XLT 4x4, and I am in need of a motor unfortunately I don't have time to rebuild it or pull it so I have been doing research on Remanufactured motors I must have come across 12 however it comes down to 3. Ford, reman, Jasper or Fraser. My problem is these motors are expensive, and Jasper and Fraser have very bad reviews can you guide me to where I can get a reliable motor, or any help is appreciated thank you.
