I honestly dont know how you guys do it. In no way shape or form would my mechanically obsessive brain allow me to drive that truck for 500 miles like that. 100% i would be completely insane by the time i made it to Florida.
We live at n a country where, if you sneeze someone will hand you a CSB crankshaft. Any parts place has the parts to fix it, and speed shops are all over the place. Get a 90s tbi 5.7, it's gonna drop in. And gearhead's help gearheads when they're jammed up. Same with bikers. Wife and I run a 92 F 150 cross country all the time, because the 4.9 has a ton of aftermarket support, and yards are full of them. Also have a network of other wrenches from coast to coast. We do regional trips like this all the time. Running, but not quite right, let's you determine if the vehicle is a keep, scrap after parts are pulled, or a long term project. Try it out, Junkyard Digs style, locally. It's a lot of fun. You meet some cool people, and make some great friends. See some amazing things. Don't get me wrong,the builds that matter, RK and we won't push. Look up the Hemi Gremie episodes. Dave calls it when the Hemi on that project was hurt, and they found an alternate car. Last one the wife and I did was an 08 Silverado from MI to western NY.epectricals and body were iffy, mechanicals were like new. Fixed the brakes, patched the wiring up, and drove it home. Wanted the 4.8 and auto for a project S 10 build. Comparable truck here was more than the repair and fuel costs, and we'd ridden the Ural down. Rented a rear gate trailer form Home Depot, for the tow back, and got to visit the kids on the way back. First trip with the new prosthetic legs as well.
Another fun tip..., you can put anti foul adaptors on the plugs...., but you can't do just one as it will retard the plugs you put them on..., so you put them on all of the plugs and advance the timing a little.
This brings back memories to when I did some spectator racing events at the Santa Fe clay track in Illinois. Stuff like this is probably the best fun you can have on 4 wheels.
