I crossed paths with Dr. Shashi at a food court inside the hospital, where I was standing in line to get food. Dr. Shashi was standing right behind me and struck up small talk with me. I did not know him from Adam, but I knew right away that I was standing in the presence of greatness. Dr. Shashi transcended our obvious differences with such charm and grace that, it made me feel at home right away. This man is a rare breed. I wish him all the best.👍

Indigenous movement - a few hundrerd Gilani/hurriat supporters ( including across the border separatists) don't equal any movement. I was born in Kashmir only to be thrown out because of religious intolerance ...Kashmir was never fundamentalist and religiously blind as it is today. Why was there no such problem before mid/late 80's .... It's very easy to currupt people's minds on religious grounds and that's what has happened with those separatists who came across the border. And majority of people of Jammu and Kashmir do not want freedom. In the srinagar valley few hundraed chanting silly slogans does not equal any movement ....if it was , the whole state will be supporting them, which they don't.

Shashi tharoor, didn't have answers to a lot of the questions mehdi asked. That in itself shows india is guilty. That fact that Indians do not have logical, rational answers to the questions asked by mehdi. Proves Pakistan justifiable accusation and india's poor human rights record in kashmir.
Life balance : I think he actually answered the questions really well. Being a politician and a diplomat he could not be direct, so some of retorts were garbed with fillers like: it's too complex a situation , there's more it then it seems, etc. India and Pakistan are no where as civilised as western societies. The military and the para military in these societies resort to actions that are considered questionable. Since kashmir has been a political failure, the state at times is run by the military and though by and large it manages without incidents, some low rank officers have been indulged in extra judicial killing There have also been cases of rape and in many cases, suspected militants have been tortured, killed and then disclared absconding. Normalcy can only return when the state is managed by the state and this can only happen if militnacy stops. For miltancy to stop, pakistan my end all militnacy training camps in POK and must not promote Islamic jihad.
Anchor seems to be very biased and opinionated, it's not very professional journalism and doesn't suit to an international News channel. On some instance he wouldn't even let Sashi finish his opinion and start interrupting as soon as he felt that it's against his beliefs, you don't see this type of behaviour by professional journalist in One to one interviews, perhaps anchor should watch and learn more from BBC, Bloomberg, or sky news. The Anchor was behaving like Pakistan agent. He was intentionally ignoring terrorism aspect in Kashmir which killed so many innocent lives and Indian soldiers. He knew nothing about Kashmir.
Atrocities committed by Indian occupation forces have been reported from time to time by reputed international media. Mr. Tharoor did not come up with a plausible justification to pointed questions by Mehdi Hassan. The issue of Hindu families being forced to migrate from their homes need very much be addressed in the overall context of Kashmir dispute. Mr. Tharoor ' s denial of Kashmir being the main bone of contention between India and Pakistan is not understandable.

It seems everyone who ever comments on this situation has a bias. The Indians will never accept the fundamental wrong which is using military oppression (700 thousand troops one of the most densely populated militarized zone) to deny the basic right of democracy. Ironic how the largest democracy in the world which has undergone colonialism is preventing a referendum being held which is consistently asked by the U.N and has been denied for years. If the people of Kashmir want to be part of India great, but let them decide first. Wikileaks cables released in 2010 that confirmed Indian forces had systematically tortured hundreds of detained Kashmiri civilians for many years. As far back as 2005, US diplomats were briefed by the International Committee of the Red Cross about CPRF torture, including beatings, electrocution, and sexual humiliation of Kashmiri detainees. This is wikileaks not Al-Jazeera so don't dispute the intention. The Pakistanis will also never give Kashmiri independence as it holds significant rivers which supply Pakistan with water therefore the ISI trains and supports terrorism in Kashmir (Government denies knowing however obviously does) which target Kashmiri Pandits who are the hindu minority which is also fundamentally wrong. Indians need to accept the obvious oppression supported by substantial evidence and Pakistanis need to do the same with terrorism. Throw a plebiscite for God's sake, a lot of Kashmiris do not even want to be part of either of these countries and wish to be independent, however sadly it always be under occupation by either of these countries destroying it because they will never allow independence. Mehdi is asking the correct questions here. I don't see any questions of bias, where all he's doing is standing up for the biggest victims (rape and even normal civilians under martial law) due the outcomes of the hostilities between the two nations. All Shashi is doing is trying to deflect by putting the bigger blame on someone else. He is right that the situation is more complex than the questions, but none of his answers are really helping the victims, are they?
Mehdi Hasan is a critical and practical interviewer, but the way Mr. Tharoor responds to his criticism is more than apt. I think there are very few politicians of his stature, who could defend Indian ethos to an international audience, like he does.
All the anchor understands is that Pakistan is Islamic Nation, Kashmir is Muslim majority state and Pakistan is claiming Kashmir. He says Pakistan says so as if he believes what it is saying. If India is really wanted to have Kashmir by force why does it wanted only Kashmir. It could have occupied fertile Bangladesh in 1971. It could have occupied Pakistan itself. Pakistan thinks that Kahsmir is its part just because its muslim majority land. India never tried to occupy Kashmir. It is Pakistan which tried to occupy Pakistan and king of Kashmir signed accession agreement with India. If Kashmir king didnt sign an agreement with India, Kashmir dont have any issues with Kashmir. India gave separate constitution on Kashmir. For almost 70 years Kashmir is different from anyother state in India. India respected its agreement. And Pakistan? It hates its own people. It hated Bangladesh and that hatred broken the nation. All the people of Pakistan need to understand that India is not an imperialist Nation. All it wanted is its own security. And all Pakistan as a nation wanted to destruction of India.
People need to understand that the crimes army, police committed can not be stopped by a state. In India Police Officers and almost every govt employee is a corrupt. State can not stop that, because state can not prove that. If Hasan argues that 99% of the alleged Govt officials never faced a trial and the corruption is state sponsored, what can we say about it? It is highly to prove a corruption case. It is also highly difficult a allegation against an armed man in the state like Kashmir. Any country can not control its soldiers on field behaviour.
Mehdi always challenges the guest sitting in front of him upfront. Had the guest been a Pakistani minister he would have challenged him as well, and Pakistanis would have accused him of being a traitor Indian spy. Indigenous movement - a few hundrerd Gilani/hurriat supporters ( including across the border separatists) don't equal any movement. I was born in Kashmir only to be thrown out because of religious intolerance ...Kashmir was never fundamentalist and religiously blind as it is today.
Why was there no such problem before mid/late 80's .... It's very easy to currupt people's minds on religious grounds and that's what has happened with those separatists who came across the border.
And majority of people of Jammu and Kashmir do not want freedom. In the srinagar valley few hundraed chanting silly slogans does not equal any movement ....if it was , the whole state will be supporting them, which they don't.

Being a politician and a diplomat he could not be direct, so some of retorts were garbed with fillers like: it's too complex a situation , there's more it then it seems, etc. India and Pakistan are no where as civilised as western societies. The military and the para military in these societies resort to actions that are considered questionable. Since kashmir has been a political failure, the state at times is run by the military and though by and large it manages without incidents, some low rank officers have been indulged in extra judicial killing There have also been cases of rape and in many cases, suspected militants have been tortured, killed and then disclared absconding. Normalcy can only return when the state is managed by the state and this can only happen if militnacy stops. For miltancy to stop, pakistan my end all militnacy training camps in POK and must not promote Islamic jihad.

On some instance he wouldn't even let Sashi finish his opinion and start interrupting as soon as he felt that it's against his beliefs, you don't see this type of behaviour by professional journalist in One to one interviews, perhaps anchor should watch and learn more from BBC, Bloomberg, or sky news. The Indians will never accept the fundamental wrong which is using military oppression (700 thousand troops one of the most densely populated militarized zone) to deny the basic right of democracy. If the people of Kashmir want to be part of India great, but let them decide first. The Pakistanis will also never give Kashmiri independence as it holds significant rivers which supply Pakistan with water therefore the ISI trains and supports terrorism in Kashmir (Government denies knowing however obviously does) which target Kashmiri Pandits who are the hindu minority which is also fundamentally wrong. Indians need to accept the obvious oppression supported by substantial evidence and Pakistanis need to do the same with terrorism. Throw a plebiscite for God's sake, a lot of Kashmiris do not even want to be part of either of these countries and wish to be independent, however sadly it always be under occupation by either of these countries destroying it because they will never allow independence. In the state of J&K there r 5 distinct regions , biggest is Laddak region in India which has a Buddhist majority & actually protested for autonomy from Indian J&K state , as they don't want to be grouped with Muslims majority , the second largest is the so called Northern Areas , or Gligit & Baltistan , spacely populated with muslim majority living in utter grim poverty which leads to protest against occupying Pakistan , according to European Union this part never witness DEMOCRACY for 70 yrs , then there is Azad Jammu and Kashmir in Pakistan which is ismalzed by Pakistan , Jammu proper is Hindu majority region with close relations with Hindu majority India & finally most beautiful & widely populated J&Kvalley which is by far the problem .... Inside the valley the informed moderates know that they belong to an area with no means of economic , social sustainability & want autonomy , then there r pro-,India , pro-pakistan camps & +Islamist which have there own agenda ..... & this is just the beginning of a few things ,,,, as righly pointed out by European Union report on Kashmir , Plebiscite is not an option in such situations , to volatile region with Kosovo-Bosnia situation , so for batter or worst as most Kashmiri know , they remain part of worlds largest DEMOCRACY surrounded by an terror importing Pakistan & a communist china

Mehdi is asking the correct questions here. I don't see any questions of bias, where all he's doing is standing up for the biggest victims (rape and even normal civilians under martial law) due the outcomes of the hostilities between the two nations.

All the anchor understands is that Pakistan is Islamic Nation, Kashmir is Muslim majority state and Pakistan is claiming Kashmir.

If India is really wanted to have Kashmir by force why does it wanted only Kashmir. It could have occupied fertile Bangladesh in 1971. It could have occupied Pakistan itself.
Pakistan thinks that Kahsmir is its part just because its muslim majority land. India never tried to occupy Kashmir. It is Pakistan which tried to occupy Pakistan and king of Kashmir signed accession agreement with India.
If Kashmir king didnt sign an agreement with India, Kashmir dont have any issues with Kashmir.
India gave separate constitution on Kashmir. For almost 70 years Kashmir is different from anyother state in India. India respected its agreement.
