    I've been on the fence about this -- I know I'm going to get some type of laser engraver/cutter.
    The area of this fibre laser is smaller, but the accuracy and being able to actually etch metal is SO desirable.
    Great video! I think you made my mind up for me!

      I would be curious to try lasering into underglaze on bisque fired ceramics, but I'd worry about the dust as well.
      Edit: Just looked and it has, of course, been done before

    • @wolfblade
      @wolfblade Месяц назад +3

      @@Wumf yep. Always my number one concern with my lasers is material safety. Since there are so many materials that are insanely dangerous to laser cut, but that people cut with vinyl cutters all the time. So nobody connects that the two cutters have very different effects, and just pick up material for a vinyl cutter for their laser cutter and risk killing themselves and eroding the steel in their machines.

    Yes fiber lasers are not useful on organic materials. I use mine for 95% metal marking and engraving only but I'm 3D printing a new black phone case right now to try that. Great video as always!

    I wonder if the laser is breaking down the dye that colors the PLA, this could be why they all react differently. No doubt the color of the plastic and the wavelength on the laser also come into it.

    Robert Cowan did a video where he experimented on lasering different 3D print materials, and had the same experience as you. Some colors worked awesome, others showed no results at all, and there didn’t seem to be any predictable rhyme or reason to which ones did or did not work well.

    Instead of a rotary unit, I think it would be enough if the device could change its focus motorically. I mean this would allow it to cover a little wider angle.

    Bright pla parts and yellow overexposed ones hypothesis: on these samples the laser burnt the dyes so its natural pla color that shows. Blue pla might have more resistant dyes.

    What about precisely lining up multiple "jobs" for something outside the build space? Is there a jig or something for that?
    What about cutting through metal or acrylic and other plastic sheets?

    • @make.anything

      The build surface has all those threaded mounting points so custom jigs could certainly be made for lining up parts... but also I'd say it's possible to get really close by eye once you've really fine-tuned the red-laser preview accuracy

    Looks like it could carve through a PCB's copper plating for fast prototypes without the chemical mess. Makes me wonder how the laser does with fiberglas/epoxy - i.e. can one drill/mill the holes without getting back to mechanical tools?

I would really like help in designing a two piece wedge of cheese that I can place some pebbles inside of to make it bottom heavy, a hole in the middle counter sunk to place a 1/4" screw so I can place a ball head mount on it so I can better use my cameras on a flat surface like my desk.

    If you see a laser product with no built in eye protection, don't buy it. It shouldn't be an optional extra, it should a fundamental part of the machine. If they don't have that one simple safety feature, what else did they skimp on? It's not worth your sight.
