Today's Black History month artist is Mary Wilson who, sadly, passed away yesterday at her home in Las Vegas. She was one of the founding members of The Surpremes back in the 1960's. They were one of the most sucessful female acts of Motown during that time. She was 76 years old. She continued performing was active in supporting a bill for Truth in Music Advertising and donated to several charities. RIP Mary. Thank you for contribution to music.

    Always loved this quote:
"As creative people, the thing that we have to break through - and in music, we do - is people who are closed, people who are fearful of opening up. Because if you’re open, you might feel pain. I don’t look for pain, but I don’t think pain is something to fear - although we do. It’s built into our human nature to fear pain. But if you can overcome the fear and say, 'It is what it is. There’s joy and there’s pain, and I want to feel all of it'... that’s kind of what my choice in life has been. I’d rather be a person who’s open, and if I get hurt, I get hurt. So be it. I’ll pick myself up and I’ll move on, and be open again. So I can feel joy, too."
Happy, Happy Birthday, Carole. Thanks again, Lee.

Yesterday a young female student was in a virtual lesson and a little sad. I said, " you know, one of my favorite songwriters is this great musician name Carole King. So I found the the BBC solo piano performance and played two tracks. Now the young student's family is from India and not familiar with Carole's music at all. She listened and applauded in the Zoom call and said, "she's really good." THEN, I said, "I'm gonna show you another great singer that's even better and sings that song "Natural Woman" that you like so well." Cued up Aretha singing at the Kennedy Center Honors when Carole was honored. She loved that even more and recognized President and Mrs. Obama. Wanted all the details on what all this stuff was all about. I felt like I earned my teacher's pay .... thanks Leland! We've got this young girl hooked on the great songs of Carole King!

These stories are hysterical, especially if you play bass. The story about Taylor's drop D tuning leading everyone to blame Sklar sounds like it happened to him yesterday, which is how Bass players see the world. I once told my guitar player I was going to write a book about the trials and tribulations of being a bass player, and he responded:"No one would read it". I believe remembering seing Judith in the troubadour video of that tour ( the second time I watched it. after I saw you guys perform in Belfast in November 2016) This beautiful lady wearing a white hat while walking to her seat? I remember around 2010 a lady coming up to me at the Alto las Condes Boulevard in Santiago de Chile, where I was singing and playing guitar at the time, raving about having seen the James Taylor and Carol King reunion tour live in the US. She was very sweet and appreciative. Just because I had sang You`ve got a friend, one of my faves, during my little gig. So, it was very inspiring for me to meet you then rather unexpectedly in Germany in 2012. A musician I had always wanted to meet. Needless to say, you`ve been always been very kind and a true gentleman.

Took (classical) piano lessons for ten years; then at age 14, I started learning to play by ear... back in '68/'69. Carol King's music was HUGE for me...I was like a sponge....listening to and figuring out the songs on Carol's Tapestry...sitting at my piano, "playing licks off of records".

Mr. Sklar, please pass on our gratitude to Ms. King. Several years back, I treated my three nieces to see "Beautiful" in the city for Christmas. It was absolutely fantastic and did Ms. King's legacy's
    justice.
If you have kids, grandkids, or are still a kid yourself, give a listen to a lesser-known song by Ms. King and Maurice Sendak called "Pierre." It's delightful!

Lee, I saw you guys back in these salad days, I don't remember when exactly, but I do remember one place I probably saw you and the band in all your glory - Red Rocks, outside Denver. I was a regular concert goer there. I have fond memories of those days, and i want to go to Red Rocks next summer (2022) and see some concerts. Gotta have those bucket list items handy!
