Although this is the first time Sakurajima’s alert level was raised to 5 on the 5 level scale, it does not mark its largest recent eruption. For that title, see Sakurajima’s plinian eruption in 1914-1915. The >2.5 km lava bomb/ejecta was what triggered the immediate raise to an alert level 5.
See documentaries about the year 536 A.D. Why don’t any of these eruptions ever make the news? Subbing to your channel made me realize how often seismic activity is happening. It’s so insane! Guess it’s only worthy of news coverage if it takes out a whole village.
Because the amount of eruptions that occurs on the planet daily would destroy the WOW effect of only reporting the deadly or spectacular ones. Last year was an example of it, we had at least 3 major eruptions and several smaller ones, because of the heavy internet coverage of them, this year eruptions are receiving very little attention, because a lot more people know that this happens frequently and it's just underreported, so by now, only us, volcanoes addicted, are watching related news.
I'm surprised too. You'd think, "A Japanese supervolcano is currently erupting," would get the media's attention. They're too busy peddling monkeypox, I guess.
It doesn’t help that Sakurajima is the most likely volcano to produce a plinian VEI 5 event, something it has done in the past. Even something close in size to its VEI 4 1914 eruption would be potentially catastrophic due to the high population density of the area. Hopefully it doesn’t come to that but it is possible that it may.

Thanks! glad to say I just sent in a contribution which you well deserve. I really enjoy the geology updates and the status of the active geology around the world. If the volcanoes ever give you time I would enjoy you looking into other active geology such as mudslides and costal erosion. I did my undergrad in geology and then went on to be a planetary scientist - I probably would have been a happier person if I had stayed in geology 🥴. If you have the time and need some extra topics the history of volcanism, rifting zones, horst and graben structures and area wide uplift and depression in the midwest has a lot of interesting stuff in it (other than the fracking quakes we have all the time out here now (not that bad for me, I was at ground zero for the Whitter quake and the Joshua tree quake)) but the locals seem to get a little wired about it all.
Thank you for your support! I agree, the topics you have suggested are quite interesting. Although for the Horst + grabens, which areas are you specifying? There’s a broad group of specific subset regions you might be referring to.
Also, does the rift zone in Idaho or New Mexico interest you? On another tangent, there is a weird potential explanation on one cause of the whole basin and range rifting (potential link in part to the initial Yellowstone hotspot). I must note that the USGS could use someone with your expertise. Planetary geology can carry over well to “more regular, broad” geology. (I do not work for the USGS, just for context). :)
It was a very dirty looking sky when it happened on the 24th July , which was a shame. Many times that this sort of thing happened on Sakurajima it was clear and without warning as if the volcano was holding it's breath with no steam or any venting, then erupted into a clear sky with lots of lightning.
The list of most dangerous volcanoes in the world at 3:28 is most interesting. In the top ten Japan has three and two more to make 5 total out of 25. And Italy also has three in the top ten. Indonesia not surprisingly has the most dangerous volcanoes with seven. Many more that were not even mentioned erupt quite frequently like Merapi on Java.
I’m glad that you appreciated that list I made. I borrowed the methodology the USGS uses for rating volcanoes (in the United States) and extrapolated to volcanoes around the world.

I have a hypothetical question that could be made into a video, what would happen if you have two large super volcanoes erupting at same time (I’m talking like Yellowstone and Toba having simultaneous full scale vei 8 eruptions)?
Is it safe to visit nearby cities like Kagoshima and Ibusuki at the moment? What happens if the volcano suddenly erupts more powerfully. Will there be time to flee those nearby cities, as long as I`m not on that vulcanic island? For Example if I`m in Ibusuki, which is about 20 km from the crater south.
Wow! Hope those cities have an emergency plan in place, they could be wiped out by a pyroclastic flow to the west and north with little or no warning. Or the caldera could collapse taking everything within 100 miles with it, scary stuff.
No problem with this volcano because he is constantly smoking/sprouting, the problem will start when he will go silent and accumulate pressure. The population is smart, they dont resettle/live on east flank with century old lava flow, and kagoshima is at west where no crater are actually...but it can change.
