  • The first time i ever cooked in my pot, i made instant mashed potatoes, I had no clue what i was doing, it rehydrated and poured over the edge of the pot, so i turned the stove off, then when i tried it, it was powdery and disgusting, so i tossed my stove in the garbage and ate dry the rest of that trip. For the AT, i knew i was going to want to cook, so i found a better, cleaner way to do it, i hope you enjoy!!!

I've used quart sized freezer bags for this. Also a long handled spoon designed for iced tea pitchers so no puncturing of the bag. I would remove the bag from the cossy for eating so not to mess it up.

A sealable silicone gallon bag might be better. It can be easily washed and re-used so you aren't throwing away a ziplock bag every day.

The point is not to have to wash

This seems like a good way to eat some extra plastic. The hot water in a ziploc is not a great combo.

Well I didn’t die after doing it for almost 6 months straight haha. Freezer bags are the way to go, definitely not normal ziplocks! What do you use?

I’ve been experimenting and have noticed a lot of the grocery meals turn into soup if you use the recommended amount of water with this method.

It definitely took a while for me to figure out exactly how much water to put into different meals, one of the nice things about cooking ramen like this is that you do actually get some soup with it afterwards 😊.

@@wizard_outdoors_ I have a friend that’s working on a U.S. made ready to use cozy kit which includes recipes for these meals along with some seasoning packets and other things that will make this a lot easier for the average person to get it right the first time. DM me if you might want some more information 😎

New to backpacking is it safe to pour boiling water in a freezer bag

Ziplock branded ones are rated/food safe for that. Other brands not necessarily

That is a great question! i used freezer bags my entire hike for that exact purpose. as long as it is a freezer bag and not a normal one, you will be fine. i do recommend always carrying one extra, i had multiple times where i discovered a tiny hole in the bottom corner of a bag after putting hot water in it, and that is not fun! i also highly recommend making a pouch cozy, there are plenty of DIY videos for that on youtube, one tip that i have for that is that it is better to make one that is too big rather than too small. My girlfriend made a pot cozy as well for having coffee in the morning, but i did not make one and i was fine.

When empty turn the bag inside out and lick it to get the very last morsel of food 😉

Use a Keith Ti6300. Cook anything, do it right and no cleanup. The perfect steamer for the trail.

It would take a while for issues to appear if there were any. I'm still hesitant to use this method. Also FDA approval means absolutely nothing for food safety...
