      Hi @Nancy Young, I'm SO glad my video got you out of a tight spot and saved you the cost of a tow truck!! Did you check the Brake Light/Horn Fuse? I don't want you to get a ticket for no brake lights! Another of my videos that could save you from delay and tow truck expense with your Subaru is at ruclips.net/video/qvbAh2lKuhY/видео.html . You may never need it, but if you do, you'll be SO glad you watched the video and learned from the guy with three sets of glasses!! If you enjoy cooking quick tasty food, search for my cooking videos on RUclips by putting YKOSTUDIO in the search box above.
      Be well,

    I was at the drive up ATM and when I was done I went to put my 95 Subaru into drive but it wouldn't get out of park. So there I am blocking the ATM and getting frustrated, so I call AAA and have the car towed back to my house. I then went on my computer and found your video, so I tried what you did and it worked!! So all I want to say is thank you very much for posting this video.

    Just like to add that in newer Subarus you may not even have to remove the whole shifter trim panel. In my dad's 2004 Forrester there is a tiny little removable panel next to the shifter's PARK position. You just pop that out (it's very small, about the size of a pinky fingernail, so don't lose it) and then push in the release with a small regular screwdriver. Great for when your battery is dead because the interlock can't release the shifter without electrical power.

      @Anderson Parker - You're welcome! If a blown fuse was causing the shifter problem, it would be best to figure out what caused it. Check the wiring that goes to the hatchback, and also check the wheel wells to see if they have rotted out and the jagged metal has pierced the wiring and shorted it. Good Luck!

    Although this is a good emergency tactic, you run the risk of major damage. The shift lock relay is most likely the problem. Less than $40 will fix this problem. The danger of your method is that the steering lock could activate while driving. The relay is to prevent the steering lock from activating in any gear other than PARK. You also run the risk of accidental activation of the air bags.

    Exactly like my 93. Except there was a plastic retainer with a Phillips style screw covering the hole on mine. Occasionally applying the brake won't always engage the shift lock disengage. I would get hella frustrated and just start beating the shifter. Your method works better. Thank you sir.

    • @ykostudio
      @ykostudio  3 года назад

      @Andrew Pingel - Thank you for your comment, I'm glad my video was helpful! "Beating the shifter" - Hahaha, been there, done that! If the shifter won't move out of PARK, you should check the fuse for the Horn and Brake Lights. If this fuse blows, often, you'll need to search the wiring for a short circuit; not a fun job! In my case, two shorts existed - One was in the wiring between the hatchback and the body, and the second was above the driver-side wheel well (the upper part of wheel well had rusted out and the jagged metal had cut into the insulation of the wire).
      Good Luck,
      Jon

    that is not a "Repair" it is a "jerry-rig."
    On my 2014 Forester the inability to get out of park was complemented by the lack of a brake light. Press your brake light, if it doesn't light up you probably have the same problem. I went to the dealer and described it to them and the two guys unanimously stated "it's the brake switch." Bought the part for $15 took a minute or two to install and it is fixed. No drilling required! Of course check the fuse first. Mine was fine.

    After six hours into what should have been a work day, I am happily able to fix this same issue to beset me. It took that long for my boyfriend to finally come up with the right search to get here as mine were producing nothing. This was just what I needed for my stubborn 1999 Subaru stuck in park. I also have the clicking from the dashboard when I press the shift button to move it. I would love to know what that is. But, anyway, I see your addendum post below to check the fuse. I will do that, too, when I get to my manual. I was using it a few days ago when I was 150 miles away and I left it on the table there. So I will have to get it somehow. Thank you for keeping us up with what you learn, ykostudio. Much appreciated.

      Does your Subaru smoke under the hood. I bought mine used in June 2016 and it almost always smokes, no matter how far I drive, short distance or long. Sometimes it does not smoke. My boyfriend checked with a subaru dealer who said they will all do that eventually because of the way the oil pan is made. It is flat and the gasket will leak and the oil drip on the exhaust system, heat up and smoke. If you have experience here, what would you do?

    The bypass switch is helpful, chances are the problem is the break light switch, located near the break pedal a simple inexpensive fix. The time you took to create a plug the problem could have been fixed properly.

    • @ykostudio
      @ykostudio  3 года назад

      @Stacey Horne - As it turns out, the problem on my Subaru was due to a blown brake light fuse caused by a short. The first short I found was in the wiring between the body of the car and the hatchback. The problem kept coming back, though, and just before I junked the car I discovered that the left rear wheel well had rotted out and the jagged metal had cut into the wiring. causing another short. Tracking down short circuits in a car's wiring can be a PITA!

    A lot of times it’s sticking from spilled drinks etc. if you spray it good with contact cleaner the work it with the screwdriver/dowel etc. it will start working. Then spray it again and work it on and off with the switch.

    • @ykostudio
      @ykostudio  4 года назад

      @Gerald Noe - Thank you for your comment. As it turned out (and as I have learned is common) the problem with my car was due to a blown fuse for the Horn/Brake Lights. I'm told that some cars have access to the shifter lock release (that I had to drill a hole for) as part of the console design for use in emergencies (e.g. - if the switch dies, or if a replacement fuse is not at hand).

    That was a nice practical solution to the problem. I am also dealing with the same issue. I looked on the internet and found that there are several possible reasons for this problem. 1. need to clean area around hole and spray some WD40 if it sticks inside hole. Also, if battery is weak or has bad connection, that can be the problem.
    That might be my problem b/c I keep one battery terminal connection just hand tight so I can easily disconnect battery to keep it from going dead when I don't use car for several weeks because I own 5 cars and often let other cars sit for long times without using them. So tomorrow morning I will clean and tighten battery terminal and see if that works. Also, it seems that there is a brake light button located on the
    break pedal shaft that may be the problem. So I will test to see if my brake lights are working. Then if all that does not work, I will just let my mechanic fix it.
    Thanks for the video. I liked your solution.

      Hi Michalos, Thank you for your comment and compliments. As noted in the annotation at the beginning of my video, a blown 20A fuse (Horn, Brake Lights) was the cause of my problem. But now I know what caused the fuse to blow in the first place! The upper mounting bracket broke, a while back, on the right-side lift cylinder for the hatchback and the cylinder extended up to where the wire bundle passes from the roof area into the hatchback. I put off repairing it and the edge of the bracket cut into the wire bundle, causing a short that blew the fuse. About a week after I replaced the blown fuse, it blew again, so I looked for the cause and repaired it. I replaced both lift cylinders ($50 for the pair at Autozone) in about 30 minutes. I hope your repair didn't cost too much from your mechanic.

    the better solution if you intend on not fixing it is to cut a dowel pin that is sticking up just slightly so when u put the trim back on it will push the pin down and unlock the shifter. this is how i fixed mine and i have all the trim parts back in place. the trim that goes around the shifter is pushing the pin in to unlock the shifter without the trim in place the pin wont be pushed in and it would be locked.

    Nice to know where that Shift Lock button is but DO NOT MAKE THIS A FIX! A hole might be nice to have but you are risking more than you know for doing a fix like this! Like ykostudio says below it was the Brake Fuse causing this problem for ykostudio, that means the Brake Lights did not work. There are other things that can cause this problem along the brake circuit (fuse, brake lights, shift solenoid, etc) will also cause problems with Brake Lights from working.
    For making this a permit fix causes the below risks, so find your car's issue and fix it:
    You are risking your life
    Your passengers
    Risk the lives of people walking
    Risk the lives of people in other cars
    Possible more expensive car repair in the future
    Car crashing into something
    Car crashing into another car
    Another car crashes into for not knowing the Brakes are being pushed
    Cop pulling you over for no Brake Lights (Fines possible)
    Find out why your car will not change gears, but it is good to know where the Shift Lock button is for temporary moving a car.
    Please, be responsible drivers! After all there are reasons for locks.

      @ykostudio  8 лет назад

      +apologiamixer Thank you for your comment. Did you check the fuse? Was that the problem?
      I'm having multiple problems with the electrical system on my Outback, now. Recently, the brake light fuse started blowing every time I used the brakes. Couldn't track down the cause, so I re-wired the brake light circuit from the pedal to the rear. Now the interior lights, radio clock, and corner marker (parking) lights all keep blowing their fuses. Haven't been able to track down the problem, and now getting ready to do more re-wiring. Definitely a big PITA.

      So, the engine started in "P"ark and then when shift to "D"rive the car worked fine?
      But after stopping he cannot put the car back into "P"ark? Does that mean the key is still in the ignition?
      Did you replace the power steering belt? Why did it break? Are the brake lights working?
      Check the fuses just in case.
      Maybe your son tried to force the shift lever from Park to Neutral for some reason?
      There's a shift lock in the center console, the shift lock is activated by a solenoid, and it's the solenoid that can be heard when the brake pedal is pressed. It prevents moving the shift lever from "P" to any other gear unless the brake pedal is pressed, it also prevents moving the shift lever from "N" to "P" unless the brake is pressed. This function that could have been damaged if the shift lever was forced into or out of gear.

    • @ykostudio
      @ykostudio  10 лет назад

      Hi Cole,
      I wish I had a definitive answer for you, but the best I can do is offer a suggestion.
      If your 2006 Outback is like my '96, you should remove the cover around the base of the shifter to access the hole for the shifter release. Put a screwdriver, dowel, Bic pen, etc, into the hole and see if pressing it down allows you to shift back into Park. If it does, you have found your temporary solution while you try to find the cause of the problem. If this doesn't help, it is probably transmission problem, which means potentially expensive repairs.
      When you find the solution to your problem, please post follow-up here so we can all learn from your experience.
      Sorry I couldn't provide a better answer.
      Good Luck,

      My Subaru also had a short to ground that caused the tail-lights to stop working. Couldn't find the short, so I improvised with battery powered LEDs. Finally discovered where the short was, by accident... The left rear shock tower had rusted through where it attaches to the wheel-well. The wiring had rubbed through and developed the short. Unfortunately, later the shock tower partially let go and was leaning toward the center of the car causing the tire to rub. A 2x4 between the towers kept the car driveable, but that was the end for it. Repairing it would be far too costly and difficult. The car is now awaiting its final journey, to the scrap yard. Check your friend's car for a similar condition. If caught in time, you may be able to stop it from getting worse.

      Just a quick way to get your car back on the road. As I discovered, after I posted the video, the root cause of the problem was a short in the Brake Light wiring that blew the Brake Light Fuse.

  • @dare369
    @dare369 3 года назад +1

    Okay. I didnt find the video in time. I forced the handle to unlock by pulling and probably broke the shift lock mechanism. Now my brake light fuse is blown the 20a one and my brake lights wont work. I replaced the fuse and it blew again. I got a code po703. I didnt reset the code before i replaced the fuse but i am going to put a new fuse in the morning with the code reset and hopefully my brake lights work again. If i broke the shift lock mechanism do you have any ideas... Or any ideas at all in what to do next? Thank you for your help so far

    • @ykostudio
      @ykostudio  3 года назад

      @Dave's Garden Experience - Unfortunately, if you broke the shift lock mechanism and want to repair it, you will probably be making a trip to the nearest Subaru dealer to buy a new part. Resetting the problem code most likely will not fix what is causing the fuse to blow. You will need a VOM and a LOT of time to track down the short circuit in the wiring that is causing the fuse to blow. On my Outback, I didn't discover the location of the short until just before I junked the car. The driver's side wheel well had rotted out and the raw metal cut into the insulation on the wiring. If you can't find the short, your next step would be to replace the wiring from the switch on the brake pedal all the way back to the lights... NO FUN!
      Good luck solving your problem. Let me know how it turns out.

      Hi again thedarkageisnow, that seems to be the most common cause of this problem. If the fuse keeps blowing, look for body rot scraping and shorting the wires.

      @JUMP START GARAGE - Thank you for your comment and question. I discovered, after the video was posted, that the shifter was not able to be moved out of the PARK position because the fuse for the Horn/Brake Lights was blown. At that point we attached an annotation to the video to make that known. Unfortunately, RUclips then discontinued annotations so we updated the description to make it clear to check the fuse. Since there is no way to add to the video, it is impossible to include that information IN the video. As it turned out, the blown fuse was being caused by a short in the electrical system. I thought I had found the short and repaired the wiring, but the problem remained. As it turned out, the real cause was a short in the wiring on the other side of the car - The rear driver's side wheel well had rotted out and the wiring was shorting, there. I didn't discover this until just before I junked the car.
      When people post comments thanking me for the video, I remind them to check the fuse.
      Knowing how to get to the Park Lock bypass on this model Subaru is still a good thing for those who need it.
      If it were possible to edit the video to include information about the blown fuse and the shorted wiring, I would do it.

      You have a bad check valve on your brake booster. This means it's not holding vacuum. So you have to wait for the car to fill the booster every time. I'd get that fixed.

    There is a question about the "stuck in park". While I now can release it, how long will this "solution" last? The car is a 1999 Hyundai with 92 thousand miles without any problem. Thanks for your response.

    • @ykostudio
      @ykostudio  9 лет назад

      +Ference Laszlo , Naturally, I can only speak about Subaru (I don't have a Hyundai), but here goes... Releasing the Shifter Lock as shown in my video will work for as long as needed, as it manually disengages the lock.
      It is best to look for the cause of the problem. The easiest thing to check is the fuses. On my Outback, the Shifter Lock is on the same fuse as the Horn and Brake Lights, as a safety feature (you shouldn't be driving without Horn and Brake Lights). If the fuse keeps blowing, you will need to look further in the circuit to find the short (Not Fun). I have other electrical problems with my car now, and it's driving me nuts trying to find the cause.
      If you are NOT blowing fuses, your Brake Light Switch might be bad (not too difficult to replace).
      Of course the Shifter Lock Solenoid could also be defective. This should be a fairly simple repair.
      Best Regards,
      Jon

    • @ykostudio

      @Nicholas Little - Yes, just like the 1996 Outback, you have to open the panel around the shifter to gain access to the shift lever lock release. The owners manual for the 2000 Forester gives details on how to do this on pages 7-24 and 7-25. If you don't have the owner's manual, you can download a copy at carmanuals2.com/get/subaru-forester-2000-owner-s-manual-88552

    • @ykostudio
      @ykostudio  10 лет назад

      Hi Darren, As far as I know, my fix is only for "stuck in park", but that doesn't mean it won't work in your case. I get the feeling that your problem may be a linkage, or more serious transmission problem. Before you try my repair, make certain that the 20A fuse for Horn Brake lights is not blown... The easy way to do this is to honk the horn. If it make a sound, the fuse is good. The Park Lock is tied to this fuse in the '96 Subaru Outback. Fuse blown = Stuck in Park.
      Before you go through with my repair, just remove the cover plate around the shifter, as shown in the video, and use a phillips head screwdrivier to trigger the release. If that works, go ahead with the rest of the repair... BUT... You really should get things checked out by a mechanic, as "Stuck in Drive" is probably an indication of something much more serious waiting to happen.
      Please post a reply to let me, and others, know how things turned out. Your experience will ultimately benefit us all.
      Best regards,
      Jon

    • @MichaelPSmith-mp1fk

      i think the down votes are due to him calling this a "fix" when it is just an emergency tactic to get you home if you are stranded. No one is going to drill a hole in their shifter for this "gerry-rig." It gets you home so you can go buy the brake switch for $15 and fix the problem properly.... like i did. $15 part, and 2 minutes to plug it in... no drilling required

    • @ykostudio
      @ykostudio  5 лет назад

      @@MichaelPSmith-mp1fk - Ultimately, this problem was caused by a blown Brake Light Fuse.

  • @billybobbucktoothejivemonk1061

    Or you could just replace the neutral safety switch. That would be the switch he is pressing down on with the dowel.

    • @ykostudio
      @ykostudio  9 лет назад

      Hi billybobbucktoothe jivemonkeycheeserat ,
      Thank you for the comment. The primary purpose of this video is to explain how to get your car working again... QUICKLY. Replacing the Shifter Lock requires considerably more time and money, and may not be necessary, at all; as I mention in the annotations, the actual cause of the malfunction may be due to a blown Fuse.
      Also, the Neutral Safety Switch is what prevents you from trying to start the engine if the shifter is not in Neutral or Park, but does not cause the problem we are dealing with, here. The Shifter Lock is what prevents you from moving the Shifter out of Park until the ignition is on and the Brake Pedal is pushed down.

      Jon

    well my 96 subaru outback wont budge still. the hole is there for the emergency release but wat is in the hole? is it supposed to be a button? i cant see anything and i am late for work. :(

    • @ykostudio
      @ykostudio  9 лет назад

      Hi Ayden, At the bottom of the hole is the manual release for the shifter lock. As I showed in the video, just stick a screwdriver (or anything that will fit that is about six inches long) into the hole, press it down, and you should be able to shift out of Park. When you have a chance, check to see if the fuse for the shifter release is blown. On my Outback it's the fuse for the horn and brake lights, which makes sense, since you shouldn't be driving with no brake lights.

      ayden cutler does the screwdriver hav to be on an angle?

    • @ykostudio
      @ykostudio  9 лет назад

      ayden cutler
      No, the screwdriver just drops straight in, and then you push it down until it stops. Naturally, the shaft of the screwdriver needs to be long enough that the handle doesn't touch the hole. While holding the screwdriver down, you should be able to push the button on the shifter and shift out of Park. If this doesn't work for you, there may be a problem in the linkage or the transmission itself, and I can't help with that.
      Let me know how it ultimately turns out, so others reading this can benefit from your experience.
      Good Luck,
      Jon
