Thanks Jonas. Playing again at age 45 after a 25 year break of hard circumstances. My love for the game shines through. I have learned a lot from you. Gone for the hybrid - Mains Grapplesnake M8 @56 lb Cross Technifibre X-One Biphase @ 54lb. UK

First hybrid string setup for me and just picked my racquet up from the shop. I went for Grapplesnake M8 Mains 56lb, and Technifiber X-One Biphase Synthetic 54lb Cross. I think I may have erred as the poly mains are not snapping back into place. Is this because the poly is octagonal and digging into the synthetic multifillament or the poly is too tight? Perhaps I should have gone for Solenco Confidential which is round poly? Any advice appreciated. 😢

Hey all. Just tried the setup and fears were put to rest. The mains are not moving and the string bed is holding its shape. Getting rediculous topspin as my shots are hitting the fence with ease. That never happend with Solenco Confidential 1.3mm alone. The Grapplesnake M8 is great👌 The only tweak next time will be 54/ 52 instead of 56/ 54.

Nice video, currently ona string journey for my Ezone 98 2021, did Head Velocity MLT at 53 lbs on mains and Lux Element at 48 lbs on crosses for a soft setup to help recover from an arm injury was really good a few hours in and for about 10 games but once tension dropped too much it was too hard to keep the ball in so I recently tried poly pro tour tour mains at 48lbs and Bab VS gut on crosses at 52lbs which was great with power, spin and control. I will try next the VS gut on mains at 54 lbs and Lux 4g OG or rough at 48lbs on crosses next, this setup has superior tension maintenance and good control from the 4G plus 4g has a longer life for a string unlike PPT.

I actually got my favourite string, the Ytex Quadro Twist (black, the white one is stiffer).
With my Blade 18 20 it was the perfect string, but became unplayable after 15 to 20 hours (felt like a dead piece of plastic when the elasticity faded), but tension maintanance is top.
I changed to a more lively racquet, now it has too much power (can't swing fully anymore), but it stays playable until it snaps.
Testing strings is awful imo, too many options, much worse than testing racquets. The Quadro Twist doesn't suit me that well anymore, I have to repeat my search.

Mostly a baseline player but like coming up to the net when given the chance. I would prefer going to a full poly or multi set up but would be ok with hybriding.

Female 4.0 NTRP here. I honestly can't get any depth with poly. I've tried so much and I just hate when the ball lands inside the service line and the contact feel is just so dead. Even with softer polys it feels dead. I think it's an elasticity issue not a stiffness issue. Do I just need more racquet head speed to make good use of poly? I tend to hit flat but when I do wanna add lots of topspin to get a really low ball up over the net, it's doable but not as easy as I'd want. Any recs?

    • @rikkevanp

Why would you uae poly if youre hitting short balls??? Theres no advantage to polys unless you have the type of swing for it. The purpose of polys is to lower the power and increase spin so advanced college level players and above can smash balls that would normally be hitting the back fence end up apinning inside baseline. It allows players who usually cant be hitting the ball full power to rip on the ball and not hit homeruns.

Nearly every racquet tester accepts co-poly's as the main string and evaluates the racquets with those strings. Even when they are testing multifilaments, they always use sentences like "Not as spin friendly as your favorite co-poly". Meanwhile co-poly's are compared to other co-poly's, not multis, natural guts, etc. Furthermore "If you suffer from tennis elbow" can be translated as "Yes, you're invalid so you are allowed to use multi. Otherwise any serious player shouldn't think less than a hybrid setup" Even the sentence in the video comes with the comment "There is nothing wrong about a pro using multi". It reminded me Seinfeld's episodes with "Not that anything is wrong with that..."

For a recreational player (say 3.5 - 4.0 level) who doesn't care about high amounts of topspin and likes to hit relatively more flat, would you say there's any point to polyester strings? I've been using polyester so far, but thinking of trying multifilament at slightly higher tension in order to keep power similar to my current setup (Yonex Polytour Pro at 54 lbs).

    • @elchanclascocina

I tried for some months and they are much more powerful than polys, which I believe Jonas says the same. So going to Multis definitely you wouldn't miss power. You'd miss a little bit more s as it does have less control. Much softer which is a big plus. Didn't last me more tha 2 hours at some points so that was a deal breaker for me. Definitely less spin, which if you hit flatter it may work! I say give them a try!

I found Velocity MLT an excellent string to use as a hybrid in the crosses. It has good durability and the price point is very low compared to similiar multis on the market... u can get a reel around 70-80 EUR, that's a steal. Also It makes sense not to use the the most expensive strings in your crosses, it's not the main flavour and anyone paying the price for Gut or more expensive multis to use as cross is kinda wasting their money... ;)

Got that string for my son. At 9 years, he generates tons of spin, so I fell for the promise of that TPU coating acting like a poly, but as a multi inside (don't want to break his arm).

It is a Head Extreme though, one of the most spinny sticks on the market. But when I try to move the mains, they resist and make that typcal cracking noise.

The main reason I chose them is I was told they’d last longer than most strings on the market. But I tend to break them every 3 weeks if I’m playing 2-3 times a week with 2 sessions of singles and one doubles. Is there a better topspin friendly longer lasting string or set up I should be using? Hi Jonas, love your tennis contents. What's your thoughts on shaped polys on both mains and crosses? That would bite the ball really good, but the string to string friction should quite high, which reduce spin potential and snap back? If looking for spin the best choice is maybe to go with a shaped poly on the mains and a round poly in the crosses? Also, have you tried the Tourna strings, like Tourna Big Hitter Silver 7 Tour for example? I heard good things about that string, and it's cheep as well, like hundra kronor för ett set. 😎
