Officially the song unravels a story of an obsession and longing for love. The capitalise BE in the title is supposed to a sound like a Chinese word meaning sorrow, and the title BEcause could be loosely translate as the cause of sorrow, and paired with the line BEcause I like you or BEcause I love you, the sorrow is caused by liking or loving someone. Also, the whole creepy toxic vibe is link to the cherography where there is a scene of someone choking another, and the lyrics about owning your breath and then your face is like an ocean view (i.e. face turning blue due to lack of breathe) etc.
Also, the MV plot theme has another layer that borrowed quite a bit of plot elements from the horror movie "US" by Jordan Peele where doppelgangers who were forced to live underground depraved of the "finer" things and are trying to are trying to take over their "privileged" above ground counterparts...won't go into much details as it would be better if you watch the movie yourself if you haven't). There are a lot of details in the MV that point to this such as the movie "US" has a hall of mirror, someone being captured and replaced, the carnival, the doppelgangers holding hand like in the choreography, the slight head bob, the two hand below the chin and on the face , mirrored choreography etc., along with easter eggs that shows such as the MV is 3:13 minute long (coincidence? I think not) , and that the opening scene and ending scene has the members in completely different outfits (with the ending otufit more whimsical), as well as the completely drain symmetrical hourglass at the end indicating that at some point, the doppelgangers replaced their original counterpart.
More impressively, musicality, it plays into the theme of opposite doppelgangers where there is a two part chorus (whimsical and cute, and a more rock follow up) and two part bridge (slow singing and followed up by a low rap with atmospherically vocals behind) trying to show this mirror duality.
There's nothing subtle about Gahyeon's singing expressions :D You will see her doing face choreo in all Dreamcatcher MVs / Performances.

WOW ! What a great and amazing song by Dreamcatcher ! As we always know, it's another best comeback of Dreamcatcher. The best song and album (BEcause, Whistle, Alldaylong) of the year 2021?! I think you must check their B sides. You must be shocked. 😉 Still I'm waiting to receive this best album. Thanks.
Maybe it's just me, but I could barely hear the music in the video. I know it's not the focus of this video, as you're looking more at the dancing and story. Dreamcatcher always surprises me with their unique moves and formations.
Dreamcatcher are outdoing themselves here once again. Musically, the song is a fantastic journey. There actually are "cute" parts, but there also are parts where the guitars go full metal. The variations in BEcause remind me of their previous masterpiece, Deja Vu. The bridge with SuA's slow rap and Yoohyeon's adlibs is possibly the most beautiful one they have ever done.
About the meaning: According to Dami, BEcause is about love becoming obsession. And also, this is a stand-alone story. They go back to their horror roots, which I really enjoy. One commenter noted that if you look at "BE" as a written Chinese character "悲“, that would mean "sadness". So the song title would mean "The Cause of Sadness". And that would make the lyric "because I like you" to maybe mean "the cause of sadness is I like you". That commenter is Jad Hamizan and he deserves all the credit for noticing that.
The video picks up on that. JiU seems to be the puppet master here (or her doppelganger!). She is the one trapping the other members and turning them into puppets, but Gahyeon tries to escape (as you can see by her throwing off the cage right in the beginning). It seems JiU catches her again though, "because she likes her". And I didn't even touch on the references to the movie "Us" yet, there is so much going on. The lyrics are even creepier. SuA sings: "Your expression is blue, blue. Your face is like ocean view.", hinting at strangulation due to the one being obsessed taking things way, way too far. Dreamcatcher are clearly not afraid to tackle the difficult subjects, and they do it masterfully here - again. For me, this is more than just pop, it is art.
