today is February 19th 2017 lawwwd have mercy Jesus! reminds me of the late great Marion Andersen! Just magnificent in grace, voice and stature. absolutely outstanding performance. THANK YOU MADLY whoever posted this, THANK you very much!
Praise the Lord. This is the version I heard when i was 2,3,4, and 5. It was one of my favorites to hear the Soloist sing. Jacob's ladder was the one I liked to hear the choir sing. And smo, but I don't remember the others. †
+Timari McCullen , Thank you very kindly. Betty Jackson King rendering of the Spiritual gives both singer and pianist the opportunity to express the power of the song.
Refrain: Calvary, Calvary, Calvary, Calvary, Calvary, Calvary, surely he died on Calvary. 1 Every time I think about Jesus, every time I think about Jesus, every time I think about Jesus, surely he died on Calvary. [Refrain] 2 Sinner, do you love my Jesus? Sinner, do you love my Jesus? Sinner, do you love my Jesus? Surely he died on Calvary. [Refrain] 3 Don’t you hear him calling his Father? Don’t you hear him calling his Father? Don’t you hear him calling his Father? Surely he died on Calvary. [Refrain] 4 Don’t you hear him say, “It is finished!” Don’t you hear him say, “It is finished!” Don’t you hear him say, “It is finished!” Surely he died on Calvary. [Refrain] 5 Jesus died for my salvation. Jesus died for my salvation. Jesus died for my salvation. Surely he died on Calvary. [Refrain]
Personal preference: I don't like the Western classical / operatic style when applied to folk music. Spirituals are folk music and employ a naturalistic style of singing whereas the classical style is extremely artificial and unnatural sounding. I wish she would just sing it without all that technique.
