    Great memories of summers in the 70's..loved seeing the great DW Randall with shirt buttons down, playing beautiful drives in his own inimitable way.

    I began playing cricket in 1975, when I was 10 years old, because of David Steele, "the bank clerk who went to war". He was my first sporting hero. I was fortunate enough to meet him many years later after his playing career had ended and thank him personally for inspiring the young boy I had been to pick up a cricket bat.

      The country loved him. No surprise that David won the SPOTY in 1975.

    Some great memories for me watching this. Used to watch hours and hours of this as a teenager. Noticed chris old there steaming in. I went to see minor
    counties play australia in a tour match late sixties at torquay cricket ground and he was bowling for them that day. I think it was lincolnshire he was with at the time. Also bowling with him was norman mcvicker who later played for warwickshire. The great graham mckenzie was playing for australia. Neil hawke another i can remember. As coming from the far south west never got to see much first class cricket in person back then. Used to rely on the bbc radio
    coverage of arlott and co and this tv black and white coverage which eventually turned colourful in the 70s. Thanks for posting.

    Thanks for posting this. It brought back memories of watching the Tests on TV during the summer holidays from school. David Steele did really well against the fearsome Lillee and Thompson. Alan Knott was the greatest wicketkeeper and no mean batsman either.

    Shout out to the fast bowlers union of Hendrick, Lever (Peter), Old and Willis with some truly great close to the wicket catching.

    Good old style cricket when every team used to go into a test match with two spinners, a time when it was important to get a big first innings total/lead and a time when spin would play an increasingly important part in the game as the wicket deteriorated. Who used to remember those good old fashioned 'war of attritions' fought out between the batsmen and spinners on a turning, uncovered wicket?

    169-9 in 55 overs in this new fangled, quick scoring one day cricket. And it was almost enough!!!

    Good on David Steele although I have to say he could be an even slower scorer than Geoff Boycott at times!

      Can you imagine Sir Geoff saying "If the captain said it you've got to do it" (referring to scoring quickly on the 4th day - Headingley test 1975)?

      Even slower than Boycott! Headingly ground has a hotel with rooms named after Yorkshire cricketers. The Geoff Boycott room is redecorated every day so the occupants can watch the paint dry!

    In the 1977 1 day international - was Tony Greig bowling his off break variety during the game? He was coming off a very short run up.

    • @rugbydad678
      @rugbydad678  5 лет назад +3

      The story is that the then captain Tony Greig went round the country asking the bowlers who the best batsman in the country was. A lot of them said Steele.

    • @dlamiss
      @dlamiss 4 года назад +1

      He was very unlucky not to tour India in 76-7. With Brearley and Fletcher and Amiss in the squad it was deemed Steele was one oldie too many. Ironically the comeback for Sir Dennis at the oval in 76 probably sealed Steeles fate even though he scored 44 and 42 in that game

    • @Deira854
      @Deira854 4 года назад +1

      Why was D Amiss so underrated? He had the highest average in the 70s

    Why was the pitch dug up?

    • @stephendines1936
      @stephendines1936 4 года назад +3

      Protesters broke into ground over night and dug up the pitch and poured oil on to it. It was in protest of a man called George Davies who was serving a prison sentence. It was the final day and they wouldn't have played as it rained the entire afternoon.

    I don’t know why Jim Laker keeps calling him “Dennis” Steele 🤔

    • @JP1234815
      @JP1234815 4 года назад

      Jim Laker would regularly mix cricketers' names up. When Ian Greig made his debut for England in 1982 he kept referring to him as Tony and when Bruce Edgar made his New Zealand debut in 1978 he referred to him as Barry!!
