His Sun sessions songs are the Elvis I got started as a teen and it's still is my go to for raw, real Elvis! Its the stuff that put him on the map! My mother used to go with friends and watch him perform live on the Louisiana Hayride during his younger days just before his fame exploded across the nation.

"That's Alright" is a cover, originally done in 1947 by Arthur "Big Boy" Crudup. That song laid the foundation of Rockabilly music. Crudup's version even has two guitar breaks which was unheard of at the time.

Baby Let's Play House is one o' Elvis' best early tracks. Remember every Elvis song released by Sun Records was a single (45 & 78). His first album was on RCA who purchased the rights to Elvis from Sam Phillips, the genius at Sun Records. Other essential Sun tracks include: Tryin' To Get To You, Just Because, Milkcow Blues Boogie 'n Good Rockin' Tonight. His first album (Elvis Presley) is also a milestone in rock 'n roll history. Listen.

So happy my Dad traded 78s with US airmen when he was on the V-Bombers out of UK and Cyprus in the early Cold War days. He left me an immaculate collection of Elvis’ Sun 78s (and a whole lot more of early rock’n’roll and Delta blues.
I played ‘em once to digitise ‘em and they live safe in his old record case. Bless you, Dad.

John Lennon borrows that "I'd rather see you dead, little girl, than to see you with another man" line for his song, Run for Your Life on Revolver. Speaking of John, he said after Elvis died that Elvis died when he went into the army (1958). I sort of agree too. Meaning the early Sun/RCA records where his greatest music.
I'd go along with Good Rockin' Tonight, and add Treat Me Nice (b&w video is great!), My Baby Left Me, (You're so Square) Baby I Don't Care....

Lee, these are just three guys you are hearing. Elvis on rhythm guitar and vocals, Scotty Moore on electric guitar and Bill Black on standup bass. That percussive clicking sound you hear in "Baby Let's Play House" is Bill slapping the strings of the bass as he's playing. These recordings were the years just before Elvis brought in D J Fontana as his drummer. By the way, Paul McCartney owns that actual bass that Bill Black played.

    ( Scotty Moore: ) We don't know.

Elvis used these backing musicians for quite a few years. Scotty Moore was a great guitarist. Linda McCartney bought Bill Black's standup bass he used on these recordings for Paul as a gift. The drummer, DJ Fontana gets a bit lost in the mix.

Personally, I love his Sun Records phase and much of what he did in 56, some of his big hits I have never been to too fond of: 'Hound Dog', I much Prefer Big Mama Thornton's original and it was the same with 'Blue Suede Shoes' and Carl Perkins... I'm not saying that I dislike them, only they are far from favourites... Always liked his early sixties period too... 'Good Rockin' Tonight', Mystery Train, 'Trying To Get To You' are just a few I recommend for your next taste of Sun...

He had his share of classic recordings from the 60s and 70s but not at the consistent level of his 50s heyday. And especially his work from 1954-57 which was the legit authentic Elvis before the pressures of commercial success, making more $ and movie stardom increasingly began to cut into his recording greatness. Not a prolific writer or instrumentalist, Elvis was more at the mercy of his handlers than a Bob Dylan or the Beatles who were organic enterprises that didn't need to rely on others to gather their best material. But Elvis's strength lay in his incredible voice, stage presence and image. A true entertainer.

@@dandare42 I am an Elvis fan and have been since being a very little boy in the early 70's... Before his Vegas days there is a lot to like, I just have a preference for his 54-56 & 60-63 periods, after 1968 my love for his music drops greatly, but even still 68-77 does hold some of my favourite songs but that is just what I like, others are free to like alternative periods and power to them... My love for him has diminished little over the years... 🙂🙂

------------------- The beginnings of Rock & Roll. Heretofore, the music was more blues than rock. A few incarnations occurred by accident by other artists with no regularity. Elvis 1954-55 at SUN STUDIOS shows how Elvis blended & morphed 2 genres : Country and R&B. If you google the original artists he covered, then listen to them both side by side, you will hear the evolution of what Elvis did to music. Example, this Crudup song THATS ALRIGHT sounded way too primitive & too bluesy, and low tempo to ever be considered rock, BUT now listen to elvis and his accoustic guitar and his voice made it sound Country (turned a blues song into country), and the guitar solo sounds rock. We must also give Bill Hailey some credits here to, way back from the 1940s when he was doing Country Western music and started experimenting with Western Swing music, and adding in R&B by the mid 50s.
Even from the beginning, Elvise covered more than just blues (although no longer PC to bring up anything that isn't paying 100% homage to blues), but Elvis also did Pop, Country, Gospel, Bluegrass (blue moon of kentucky) and turned it all into his own new music ROCKABILLY. BBKing said it best, Elvis had it all and he did it better than anyone. RUFUS THOMAS said, Elvis came out with a style of his own, and injected something into black music that no other artist ever did.

His best was 1968 Comeback special. I was 12 when I saw him on sullivan, in 1956 and was in Love. He got better through the decades morphing into an almost three octave rage. Even his performance of " Hurt" in Vegas only weeks before he died was a vocal wonder. Each decade from 53 when he was 19 years old till August 1977 when he was getting ready to go on Tour starting in Maine. His dedication to his fans and family were like nothing else. He had already had two heart attacks one in 75 and 76 before the one that killed him in 77. He didn't want the world to know he was ill, as denoted by his bloated appearane, which was liver failure not filtering out toxins. Read the truth in the Book "Destined to Die Young" by Sally Hodel. His mothers parents were first cousins producing a double gene called Alpha one. So his mother and her two brothers all died in their mid 40's all of heart disease, liver disease, amend lung disease. He over used Prescription drugs not street drugs. I say all this to let you know that he strived to improve and was executive producer of his own music. He often arranged on the fly and picked the best musicians and paid them well. Thank you for your great review. Be Blessed

  • @dandare42

Most of these tracks were cut in 1954-55 and Elvis sounded like a talent that had been around forever. In actuality, he'd not been performing on the circuit for years and was just 19-20. Just came to Sun Studios so often that he got noticed, started cutting records with the local musicians and impressing Sam Phillips who owned and produced at the label. This being the days where a small local label and studio could get you airplay that would spread across the country. By the end of '55, Elvis had attracted enough attention that RCA snapped him up. The rest is history. It's funny because Elvis could sing the hell out of those R&B/rockabilly cuts but was a huge fan of crooners like the Ink Spots and Bing Crosby. Plus his true passion was gospel and, once established as a huge artist, made several outstanding LPs in the 1960s in that vein that outstripped a lot of his secular work in the decade. Shame about how corrupt management and his own vices in pills destroyed what could have been an even longer and rich life/career. But that's how superstars are sometimes, blazing like a comet and burning out in short order.
