APR stands for Annual Payment Rate. Every bank charges for mortages, loans, overdrafts etc at their APR, which for Nationwide is a ruinous 39.9%. If you borrowed £75 from Nationwide for 7 days, you would pay back £104.92.

I think it's because he illustrates the concept in a friendly, humorous way, rather than sounding dry and boring. The default rates are higher than on most longer term loans, but not sufficient to justify the insanity.
