    Thanks for a very good overview of Vanilla OS 2.

    Vanilla OS v2 is nice. Newbies should just take a deep breath, then follow the steps and not hurry. You get a top notch Linux which has a nice desktop and can run just about anything.

    Did a little fiddling with this distro and it needs more time. Would also like to see a different desktop option than gnome. I don’t want my laptop to look and function like my tablet.

    Interesting, the reason it didn’t ask you for a password at 15:50 is that you weren’t actually in the real system. It’s a special container that passes through applications to the real system but it lives completely in user space(it uses your normal home directory but can’t access anything else). It’s interesting because it’s done so smoothly you didn’t even notice. Basically the system is compartmentalised into the real or base system and the part where the user mucks around. If there are any issues you can just reset that container and reinstall the applications you put into it while preserving actual files you created(including configuration settings of applications).
    Edit: you can see it at 16:46: 394 dpkg packages and 60 flatpaks, that’s by far to few for an entire system, it can’t see the real system packages because they are outside the container in directories it can’t access. The flatpaks it can see because of the user tag you tried clicking on early in the video, it means the flatpaks are installed per user into that users home directory which is shared with the container. As I said, interesting :).

      This is probably the most interesting comment here. I came here after "The Linux Experiment" made a video of VanillaOS to learn more about how the special functionality of this OS works and how one would work their way through it considering the system is immutable, but most of the demo was just going through standard Gnome stuff which is the same in just about every Linux distro... :\
      What you wrote is probably more useful to me than the entire video, and for that you have my thanks!

      @@linuxhub70 Gotta live up to the reputation!
      Seriously, though, it's not my intention to sound like an asshole. It's just IMO a VERY important part was missing. I spent most of earlier today trying VanillaOS2 and Fedora Silverblue to try and further figure them out.

      @@GrumpyDerg I usually always tell my viewers that my videos are done from the perspective of a new user. not a full on pro. But i usually also state that if you would like to see a deep dive on a particular subject to please simply let me know in the video descriptions. and most importantly. don't take my comments seriously. It's all love from my point of view!

    This distro is not for noobs. So you can skip installation and explain installed apps. That's a basic gnome installation. This is a very bad demo. You open blackbox and show the version. You need to open apx instead. You don't install programs with sudo apt install. The whole point of this distro is to use containers.

    • @bieggerm
      @bieggerm Месяц назад +1

      Nah in orchid the Terminal App doesn't give you the Host OS shell. Instead you default into Pico Subsystem. You can use apt as normal in there. This was specifically done for less experienced users to enable them to use a package Manager they're used to.
