Im here for the lawsuit too. When I first heard the sound from black panther it sounded like African ululating sounds. Abel is African and so is black panther. Kendrick loves his African roots. Are these guys in this band African? So I ask who stole from who? ruclips.net/video/1fPGqEpLYuQ/видео.html
I know this comment is two years old but this comment still had me dying. Abel and Kendrick are both breaking into the pop scene which is mostly white oriented. Plus you have no way to tell if one of the musicians is of African descent or lived in Africa at any point. This lawsuit was stupid and so is this post.
I was a fan of Yeasayer and Sunrise long before this whole controversy. Kendrick Lamar is dope and The Weeknd is eh. I will admit: Yeasayer didn't make a great case here. But does inundating their video with dislikes accomplish anything for anybody? It just makes you guys as fans look like a bunch of babies.
@@WiloPolis03 They do have quite a bit of fans by now though (it’s not like it’s in the 1000s) so it’s nice to see them stay a bit obscure. If they were too mainstream it’d probably bring them down.

This lawsuit against the Weeknd and Kendrick is ridiculous. The sound that Yeasayer is suing about is called Ululation. It's commonly found in Ethiopian music and other African cultures which makes sense in "Pray For Me" since it's soundtrack music for the Black Panther film. Here's the wiki page for it: en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Ululation also a video with ululations from different African cultures ruclips.net/video/1fPGqEpLYuQ/видео.html
Sunrise: WOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO Pray for Me: ALALALALALALALALALA Nobody: Yeasayer: PlAgIaRiSm The Music Industry: Am I A Joke To You? The song was good though
Songs got vibes. I can dig it. While the Wknd and Kendrick may have been influenced by this song, Pray for Me is in a different octave and key. Kendrick and The Wknd’s alleged use of this copyrighted chorus holds little to no resemblance and was in no way utilized as a defining feature of their song. All music holds influence in one way or another, whether we realize it or don’t. Music is something we create to share with people. To request a cease and desist of airplay and sales of a song that went double platinum (which means people like it) because you want to make money off of their work, is shameful, selfish and a dangerous path to venture down as the industry progresses. I am all for the protection of intellectual property and music copyrighting, but this, in my opinion, is a far cry from infringement. Congratulations to Yeasayer on all the views they’ll be receiving through this PR stunt.
As someone who listens to both Kendrick and Yeasayer I gotta say the first time I listened to Pray for Me I immediately recognized the "Oooooh" from this song. I'm pretty sure it's the same. I would want credit at the very least if my voice was used on a popular track.
"Your honor, The Weeknd and Kendrick made their song with "sounds" and "vocals". Since we also made our song with "sounds" and "vocals", it's clear that we have been ripped off and deserve compensation."
To everyone saying this doesn't sound like pray for me at all, you're right but that's not the point. The law suit is not for an kind of aesthetic similarity. It's because Kendrick/the weeknd sampled the song without permission. They clearly use the start of this song in pray for me. Yeasayer might be morally unreasonable in this lawsuit, true. But you can't deny they have legal grounds.
This song is amazing,I've been heavily into this recently and boy, does it sucks to have the song get attention for the wrong reason. I hear the sample of course, but it's such a small part it does not warrant a lawsuit at all.
Oh man, now all these comments about an incredible band that recently broke up are going to be all about this lawsuit. Not exactly how I wanted the world to know about Yeasayer 👀
That sucks. Yeah, I'm first hearing about them now and this track is a banger, but the whole thing doesn't reflect well on them hah. What's their story?
people saying there is no case don't understand sample law at all. they are not saying the songs are similar lmao. they are saying they took a portion of the song and then rerecorded it to avoid having to pay for a sample.
The funny thing is that Yeasayer samples music ALL THE TIME. The main riff in Longevity is from "White Hot Magic" by the Polyamorous Affair," just slowed down. And that's cool! I always liked Yeasayer because I thought they were accepting of the era that we're in where sampling music is the norm. It's really disappointing to see them go this route. Good on them to drop the suit but only after public embarrassment. I mean look at the dislike ratio on this video.
Most people came here because they are Kdot and Abel worshippers but like few others I came here after hearing about the lawsuit and I was honestly expecting this to sound absolutely nothing like "pray for me" BUT the start of this song is almost the EXACT SAME as the start of "Pray for me". Was it an accident and will the lawsuit be thrown out ? Almost guaranteed. Is there a HUGE similarity with the sounds of the opening part of this song and the opening part of the other , absofuckinlutely.
Pray for me isn't being sued by for similarities, but due to a potential sample that hasn't been cleared. As Fantano spotted, 0:00 in this track and 2:10 in Pray for me. It seems like a sped up and high pitched sample that never got cleared
DISCLAIMER! People, they are not suing Kendrick for copying their song! They don't sound similar, but that is NOT the point. The point is that even the smallest bit of sampling not attributed to the original is a copyright violation. They are NOT saying they copied that style of "singing" or "voice", they are saying that they LITERALLY lifted the opening part and put it in their song without consulting Yeasayer first. That IS illegal and SHOULD be prosecuted if true.
Small bands suing big artists is a lose/lose situation. First, it just makes you look petty and out for a cash grab. Second, it ensures that you will lose respect from current fans and will never get respect from anyone else. I hope it's worth it.
Both of them are great songs regardless of the lawsuit, it's the art vs the artist And tbh I still think the members of Yeasayer seem like nice people, even if this was a really bad move on their part
The suit against The Weeknd and Kendrick is a desperate cashgrab and bid for popularity. Y'all should be ashamed for suing them over such a small vocal part.
Maybe the intros are similar but even if they got sued Kung Fu Kenny has been passed the torch of west coast rap he ain't gonna be hurting. Everybody gonna support him pay for his lawyers ECT ECT...this shouldn't even have been brought up to my attention
Guys. Music will sound the same eventually! Doesn’t mean he copied!! If anything he got inspired from this song. But honestly we have to actually SEARCH for the comparison. I definitely would not have heard anything similar until someone said something. Please leave Kendrick alone.
I'm amazed by how misinterpreted this lawsuit is. This is NOT over a stolen song, it is about an uncredited, stolen sample in a song, which it clearly is, despite alterations. Why would it be wrong for Yeasayer to sue? It should've been credited from the start and royalties paid where due, that's how it works. In academia you need to cite your sources, here you need to credit your samples. Get a grip, people.

That's exactly where I'm at with this comments section lmao, I discovered Yeasayer a few months ago bc I've been listening to a couple songs of theirs for the past few years, so as someone who's just been spending quarantine listening to all 5 of their albums all in like 1 month it makes me mad to see people just glossing over their actual talent
Here after Tell me lies
Great song - excellent and very unique band.
LYRICS:
I'm always ready for a war again
Go down that road again
It's all the same
I'm always ready to take a life again
You know I'll ride again
It's all the same (ooh, ooh, ooh)
Tell me who's gon' save me from myself
When this life is all I know
Tell me who's gon' save me from this hell
Without you, I'm all alone
Who gon' pray for me?
Take my pain for me?
Save my soul for me?
'Cause I'm alone, you see
If I'm gon' die for you
If I'm gon' kill for you
Then I'll spill this blood for you, hey
I fight the world, I fight you, I fight myself
I fight God, just tell me how many burdens left
I fight pain and hurricanes, today I wept
I'm tryna fight back tears, flood on my doorsteps
Life a livin' hell, puddles of blood in the streets
Shooters on top of the building, government aid ain't relief
Earthquake, the body drop, the ground breaks
The poor run with smoke lungs and Scarface
Who need a hero? (hero)
You need a hero, look in the mirror, there go your hero
Who on the front lines at ground zero? (hero)
My heart don't skip a beat, even when hard times bumps the needle
Mass destruction and mass corruption
The souls are sufferin' men
Clutchin' on deaf ears again, rapture is comin'
It's all prophecy and if I gotta be sacrificed for the greater good, then that's what it gotta be
Who gon' pray for me?
Take my pain for me?
Save my soul for me?
'Cause I'm alone, you see
If I'm gon' die for you
If I'm gon' kill for you
Then I'll spill this blood for you, hey
Hey, hey
Hey, hey
Hey, hey
Hey, hey
Who gon' pray for me?
Take my pain for me?
Save my soul for me?
'Cause I'm alone, you see
If I'm gon' die for you
If I'm gon' kill for you
Then I'll spill this blood for you, hey
Just in case my faith go
I live by my own law
I live by my own law
I live by my own
Just in case my faith go
I live by my own law
I live by my own law
I live by my own
Oh wait, wrong song
Im here for the lawsuit too. When I first heard the sound from black panther it sounded like African ululating sounds. Abel is African and so is black panther. Kendrick loves his African roots. Are these guys in this band African? So I ask who stole from who? ruclips.net/video/1fPGqEpLYuQ/видео.html
I know this comment is two years old but this comment still had me dying. Abel and Kendrick are both breaking into the pop scene which is mostly white oriented. Plus you have no way to tell if one of the musicians is of African descent or lived in Africa at any point. This lawsuit was stupid and so is this post.
genuinely tragic to see a good song getting disliked a ton just because of a bad case the band tried to make almost 7 years later
About to sample this brb
Lawsuit aside, this song slaps.
The bands split all this has done is tarnish their legacy
You're talking about people who live vicariously through celebrities, they're the saddest specimens on the planet.
I'm not supposed to like Yeasayer. I'm 62 years old, but damn.
I don't like much of mainstream anything.
Like what you like, regardless
@@leehall2813 OK BOOMER
Yeasayer isn't mainstream at all.
@@Tails7212 They're psychedelic pop, sometimes indie pop. Some of their albums are more accessible than others (sorry for being ~6 months late lol)
This album's such a masterpiece/work of art and it's nice to see them stay away from the mainstream.
Idk, I wish more people got the chance to listen to them before they called it quits
@@WiloPolis03 They do have quite a bit of fans by now though (it’s not like it’s in the 1000s) so it’s nice to see them stay a bit obscure. If they were too mainstream it’d probably bring them down.
@@xjaninex I don't think so, artists can still decide how they want to sound regardless of the size of their fanbase
@@WiloPolis03 Not really.
I was unaware of the controversy surrounding this track. I came back to listen to it after ages and now I'm laughing my ass off looking at the dislike bar.
I came here because of the lawsuit but damn I like this song.
This album set me up for life
Well, atleast is a good song 😁
This sounds dope I think I'm gonna sample it 🔥🔥
Look. I just had to take hours to remember the name of this band. I saw them with MGMT back in 08 and they blew MGMT outta the water. But, I'm lame and only downloaded their stuff onto CDs so I forgot their name! I'm so happy I found them again!!!!!! Yeasayer at Walter's on Washington in Houston was one of the coolest nights there (other than the Jonbenet's last show)
I saw that tour in Atlanta. Was a fan of both when I saw the show and I agree that Yeasayer were the better band.
@@bushisaterrorist911 totally awesome to hear someone experienced the same stuff💜 I am still a fan of both, but that show threw me outta the water.
Ya don't hear it.... y'all aint got the weeknd and Kendricks money to fight this anyway.... envy is unbecoming fam...
I LOVED this song years ago. Then when I got Spotify I lost all my old music.
Now after hearing about the lawsuit I have rediscovered this absolute banger.
Still don't respect them for trying to sue, literally doesn't sound like Pray for Me in any way.
This song's wack.
@@greencupofdeath It isn't but go off.
The funniest part about this is all of the people hopping on here saying "it don't sound like Pray for Me" acting like they know what's at issue 😂
Okay Katie.
Shut up, Katie.
Sue the whole music industry.
stoooop. they invented ooohing. respect the kings of originality ✊🏽😞
It's a win for them even if they lose the case. They have already increased their views and popularity.
So sad that this song is being downvoted because of some legal issues. This song is fucking glorious.
not anymore
@@DracoVolantus why?
This lawsuit against the Weeknd and Kendrick is ridiculous.
The sound that Yeasayer is suing about is called Ululation. It's commonly found in Ethiopian music and other African cultures which makes sense in "Pray For Me" since it's soundtrack music for the Black Panther film.
Here's the wiki page for it: en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Ululation
also a video with ululations from different African cultures ruclips.net/video/1fPGqEpLYuQ/видео.html
coming in with the hard facts
Sunrise: WOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO
Pray for Me: ALALALALALALALALALA

The Music Industry: Am I A Joke To You?
The song was good though
Why all the downvotes? It's a good song.
One of the former band members (Anand Wilder) said in an interview that he no longer thinks it's a sample and they closed the case
@@WiloPolis03 that's actually pretty surprising as it sounds exactly alike.
@@gnebs2392 It sounds pretty similar, but this one is more vocalizing whereas The Weeknd & Kendrick's sounds more like ululating
Phil Collins should have sued then for stealing “In the Air Tonight”. Grasping at straws for real.
DeathTrap from who
i took this really seriously and i compared it side by side. THEY'RE NOT SIMILAR IN THE LEAST
I don't see how Kendrick and the Weekend can lose on this one
Reachin' realllllllly hard.
Great album
I am listening to this shit for 3rd time now and still cant figure out where the fuck it is similar to pray for me??
There's a handful of pointy mountains here in Phoenix
Oh man, now all these comments about an incredible band that recently broke up are going to be all about this lawsuit. Not exactly how I wanted the world to know about Yeasayer 👀
That sucks. Yeah, I'm first hearing about them now and this track is a banger, but the whole thing doesn't reflect well on them hah. What's their story?
Likewise
people saying there is no case don't understand sample law at all. they are not saying the songs are similar lmao. they are saying they took a portion of the song and then rerecorded it to avoid having to pay for a sample.
Entourage
Love this song
BANGER
I honestly thought that weird laugh chorus in Pray For Me was sampled from part of the beginning laugh in the song Wipe Out by The Safaris.
Dat bass line
The funny thing is that Yeasayer samples music ALL THE TIME. The main riff in Longevity is from "White Hot Magic" by the Polyamorous Affair," just slowed down. And that's cool! I always liked Yeasayer because I thought they were accepting of the era that we're in where sampling music is the norm. It's really disappointing to see them go this route. Good on them to drop the suit but only after public embarrassment. I mean look at the dislike ratio on this video.
is this sampled on pray for me by the weeknd and kendrick?
This Is the best prediction ever, wtfffff
This is crazy 🤣
Best case scenario for this comment. You're about to be "comment famous!"
Edit:Nah it wasn't sampled either
Good call 👍🏿
Huh? No.
Umm I don't understand how tf this sounds like pray for me
Great song! Too bad SOME Kendrick & Weekend listeners ruin it :)
Welp, the lawsuit bought attention to a cool band I've never heard of... Ok.
Pray for me isn't being sued by for similarities, but due to a potential sample that hasn't been cleared. As Fantano spotted, 0:00 in this track and 2:10 in Pray for me. It seems like a sped up and high pitched sample that never got cleared
This guys are silly for trying to sue one of the 🐐s with no real reason.
Not the same sound. Not even at all. This is bullshit and you know it
The intro sounds like Say It Right by Nelly Furtado
Nelly Furtado can sue these guys then...
Yeah, it's "instantly recognizable"
Small bands suing big artists is a lose/lose situation. First, it just makes you look petty and out for a cash grab. Second, it ensures that you will lose respect from current fans and will never get respect from anyone else.
I hope it's worth it.
Everybody stream “pray for me” instead
Savannah Scobie Thats just gonna support this shitty band if you do 🤦🏻♂️
Fuck you
Both of them are great songs regardless of the lawsuit, it's the art vs the artist
And tbh I still think the members of Yeasayer seem like nice people, even if this was a really bad move on their part
Their success isn't your success, stop being so vicarious.
Music copy write laws are exstremely tight. Pablo Picasso is widely quoted as having said that “good artists borrow, great artists steal.”

Listening on Jan 1st 2020. Heard they just broke up. Thanks for the memories!
Music plays in court:...

TELL ME LIES brought me here...
Same
Guys. Music will sound the same eventually! Doesn’t mean he copied!! If anything he got inspired from this song. But honestly we have to actually SEARCH for the comparison. I definitely would not have heard anything similar until someone said something. Please leave Kendrick alone.
Gambino actually rapped over this WAY back.
I believe the track shares the same name
"I do not talk, I am just a rapper"
I'm amazed by how misinterpreted this lawsuit is. This is NOT over a stolen song, it is about an uncredited, stolen sample in a song, which it clearly is, despite alterations. Why would it be wrong for Yeasayer to sue? It should've been credited from the start and royalties paid where due, that's how it works. In academia you need to cite your sources, here you need to credit your samples. Get a grip, people.
