    Film Synopsis:
In this subversive satire, a group of elites gather for the very first time at a remote Manor House to hunt ordinary Americans for sport. But the elites’ master plan is about to be derailed because one of The Hunted, Crystal (Betty Gilpin, GLOW), knows The Hunters’ game better than they do. She turns the tables on the killers, picking them off one by one as she makes her way toward the mysterious woman (two-time Oscar® winner Hilary Swank) at the center of it all.

@@corvoattano4777ah. I mean. If an autistic person thinks that fits, fine, everyone can interpret things differently but what really makes sense is something different. The rich folks talk about not being racist when they plan to murder as if that matters once you decide to be a serial killer. Half the hunted get lost in conspiracy thinking and curiosity and dreams of what comes next instead of survival. To me, she's simply just constantly, all the time, thinking and paying attention. She has no interest in having a little chat for the most part. She doesn't interact normally because she's too busy with actual important questions. The jackrabbit story is a little break from that.

@@gur262 A lot of the mannerisms and thought processes are very autistic. Lots of observation, correlation of information, asking questions to get specific information in a manner in which she is thinking that seems odd or out of place to others, literal answers, minimal emotional reaction, lack of empathy on certain levels, acting after coming to a decision, moral ambiguity, etc. I think they did a decent job at it, especially where she asks questions that confuse other people but are very much in line with a thought process or observation she has that she wants to define for herself better, pausing to consider all the information, etc.

If this were a just world of just institutions, then Oscars would be awarded in this manner you bespeak of, almost as though as a meritocracy. Alas, the Members of the Academy have many boxes that must be checked and the film engaged upon too many academy-disqualifying exercises of artistic freedom/license. Some freedoms aren't free, when the social sockpuppet and its strings are not given the propaganda they demand, then they do Manorgate and struggle sessions are held and one ends up in 'Arkansas'.
Silver lining, the film was made and exists and can be viewed by peoples, as though a 'cult-classic' of old. So, at least we have that, even if not the establishment's adoration via awards implied to be the most important qualification of what is or isn't art. It exists to view because though unable to grant the work many awards and recognitions, many in and of the Academy and the diaspora, they love art and freedom thereof - They enjoy this film, guilty pleasure or not, they enjoy it exists and know it has a greatness about it...
But, either way, eventually the jackrabbit will contact them and then not just the average viewer will be denied engaging in the arts, but the artists themselves that enjoyed this film. Because the jackrabbit always wins, except if the jackrabbit racketeers too overtly, then the anti-trust tortoise slowly and steadily build a legal case.

Asphyxiants and blood agents don't work that fast. It can take 15-20 minutes for someone in an execution gas chamber to die and that is when they are in a confined space and following the doctor or priest's advice to breathe deeply.
Only nerve agents are that fast and as they are a contact agent, if the couple are not wearing full MOPP gear when they pop the cannister, a single droplet on their skin and they're 50:50 dead too.
Added to which, simply turning on an exhaust fan would not decontaminate the area of effect. Every item in that entire store would have to be pulled and sealed-bag disposed of in a hazmat waste site so that the entire place could be pressure sprayed, mopped, aerosol tested an likely cleaned again (tabun, soman, sarin persistent agents, V-series doesn't hang around as long but it is so lethal you might as well burn down the whole store and start over...).
The blonde sounds like she's half paranoid psychotic (what if they are simply frauds, buying off the back of a truck and/or overcharging to make a buck from a barely profitable backwoods store?) and the Lefty Loons are clearly well past the bend so what you have is a dysgenic white-on-white hate fest, hiding genocidal intent behind vicious 'comedy'.
The entire story is pathetic and crude in that the script writers clearly don't understand what they are talking about and the females-are-the-only-heroes theme is not at all surprising but rather brutally ugly for what it hides of phallic envy and utter presumptive stupdity masquerading as 'innocence' (listen to Snowball talk about her mom like she's having a rapture, totally little-girl-lost. Something only a total sociopath 'telling stories' would do...).

@@chazzmikey True!!! The focus shifts on each character at the start, and you think "OK this one is going to be the star..." and you start rooting for them... only to see them get blown up a second later.
But I'll take it a step farther... what made this movie so good for me was that, with the exception of Hilary Swank, most of these actors are not major stars. At least I didn't know any of them (but I guess I don't watch that many movies either). So it leveled the playing field even more.
Hollywood overuses such a small pool of actors ad nauseam. As a viewer you're forced to suspend reality and ignore the fact that the main character you are currently watching portray a spy, was a kindergarten teacher in the last movie you saw. I personally think every actor should have a "swan song" one time only in a major movie production... and then never be seen again on the silver screen.

I think it just about covers the red state blue state thing. I grew up in central Florida. Most of my friends left for college and after moved to NYC. I went to Temple univ. in Philly but returned to florida in 1999. I had Democrat parents- just noting that. There's a huge divide between me and my friends now. We can't talk politics. Although I'm super nice and listen to their gripes and opinions they can't get thru a discussion without insults if I share any thought that doesn't align with theirs. I had to block them on FB years ago. We still text and call some bc we were friends since we were in 3rd grade and it's hard to let go but everything is different. And it's not different for me it's different for them.
One of them moved back here from NYC and she constantly bashes a certain county near us. She blanket statements everyone and says the most cruel things. One of my other friends here said everyone in that county needs to be killed because they're all racist maga people🤣. I said "All of them? You know every single person in the entire county and they're all wearing white sheets and burning crosse really?" I'm like how funny bc my neice who lives there voted for Biden and is the biggest liberal. Her husband's parents have a huge "I voted for Biden sign" that is still up. But no according to them people need to die bc they're all stupid Nazis. When I watched this movie I so wanted to send them the clip.
So this film isn't too far from the truth. I'm surrounded by very angry hateful people who don't hold back at all. They love to put everyone into little boxes... They feel superior because we are so ignorant and they're so intelligent just bc we don't think exactly the same. They would have been good friends with Hilary Swank's character. 🤔

@@dystopian2153 Experienced the same attitude but from a different angle and the other side of the aisle. I grew up in a conservative town in a blue state, helped my folks move south to where my sister lives (NC) because the winters were getting to be too much work for them and they didn't want to depend on me like their parents did to them... Everyone I still consider friends are pretty moderate with maybe one or two strong opinions but not necessarily in only one direction... After working down here for a bit I realized I couldn't go a day without someone bringing up something Fox or NM told them to be upset about, how everyone that didn't think like them were p@dos and devil worshippers... And ffs, I have LGBTQ friends and acquaintances, yet I have never in my over-30 life heard it brought up so much as I have than just the 2 years I've been down here.
It's just a different flavor of the same sense of superiority from a place of no experience with the people they're stereotyping and condemning. Sure, I'd heard things back home that made me uncomfortable when Obama first won, but not at all the same level of toxicity that I'd heard after 2015-16, and from everyone, nor the level of obsession with all of it since moving.

I was in Chicago a few months back, and they were like $14 a pack. The further south you get and the more rural, that price hits lower and lower. Hell even in the suburbs it's $5 less. So with that math just factored in, you make a really rural area I would be suspicious if they tried charging me near $10.

Like so many other commenters, I never heard of Betty Gilpin before this movie, and now she's my favorite action star! My only nitpick with the plot was having her show up at the last villain's FRONT GATE, in BROAD DAYLIGHT. Nooooo! Her character would have waited until nightfall, surveilled the area, then slipped in quietly through a window or door. Put your enemy at ease, thinking you've given up, and run for your life, instead of actually stalking them. Let the tension build until they make a fatal mistake in their arrogance and smug "superiority," for in that they had both in abundance.

I don’t think that was the point though. In that final bit of the movie, she was just so done. I truly think she walked in prepared to either die or to kill the b*tch that orchestrated it all, and didn’t really care either way it went, but she wasn’t going to give up without a fight.

If they'd used this ten-minute clip to promote the film, they'd have had a hit on their hands. They sure screwed up the marketing. This is funny and entertaining and now I want to see the movie.

    • @Paelorian
      @Paelorian Год назад +1

I watched it (it's free with ads on Freevee) and it was really enjoyable! They really botched the marketing on this potential hit. It's better than most movies like this. The acting was generally very good (Gilpin was excellent) and writing was very sharp for a Hollywood political movie. It's impressive how they managed to make a political satire that should be appealing across party and ideological lines.
The only thing I thought was something of a cop-out *[minor spoiler]* was how Gilpin is the only apolitical character whose ideological position is unconfirmed. I don't think that was necessary. It was as if they thought if they actually made her one of the conservatives then she couldn't be identified by progressives as a victim. You would think being a poor downtrodden working-class girl hunted down by wealthy elitist murderers for fun would make her sympathetic enough to cheer. Instead they made her a politically ambiguous Southern "working-class white" and there's a question of whether she even "deserves" to be there (not that anyone deserves to be hunted down and murdered for expressing partisan political views online).
But regardless, it's a lot of fun. Gilpin is innocent but extremely tough, and the villains are villainous. Lots of twists and turns. Better than most similar films like the _Purge_ series. More clever and artfully directed. I like _The Hunt_ better than _Squid Game._ No masterpiece, but a good genre film that will be looked back upon as a valuable time capsule in some ways. If you're going to see it, I recommend seeing it as soon as possible before the political references become so dated that it seems historical. The sooner you watch it, the more familiar the references and the jokes about them will be.
It probably could have used some more character development, it was a little heavy on plot and action and some of the characters got killed off so fast their deaths weren't as impactful as they could have been. Although many of the characters are such caricatures that they're not missed when they leave the film, since there's no depth to them anyway. But there are a few exceptions. They gave the high-profile actresses interesting depth to their roles. Or maybe it's just that the actresses were so good, they were able to imply greater depth than was in the script.
Recommended for entertainment value rather than artistic merit. It's not entirely inartful, but it does feel like rather trifling summer popcorn entertainment. But it's a good one among such films! I saw it a few months ago after writing the above comment and don't know if it will hold up, it may age poorly, but now I'd give it a 7/10, maybe 7.5. It's similar to buy sharper than _The Menu. The Menu_ goes after more obvious targets and although Ralph Fiennes is always good it was weaker overall. Gilpin's performance definitely topped Anna Taylor-Joy's similar heroine. Despite being a more enigmatic character we learn even less about, Gilpin's character is more memorable and sympathetic.
The movie is a little violent, but if you watch and enjoy this RUclips clip it's pretty safe to say that you'll enjoy the rest of the movie. This scene represents the tone well. Really, they could have and should have shown this scene as a ten-minute preview and won a lot of interest. They allowed conservative media to spin an incorrect narrative that the film was genuinely taking the side of the murderers against the victims. Just watching this scene would have disproved that and I think a lot of people left, right, and center would have wanted to see it. Gilpin is really charismatic and this scene is quite funny, with a great ending.
I think it may have been the tendency of the filmmakers and studio that's demonstrated in the film which I criticized where they were very carefully trying to avoid taking sides politically to the point of not even siding with murder victims against mass murderers. The studio may not have wanted to correct conservative media for fear that reassuring conservatives that the film wouldn't offend then would be perceived as siding with conservatives and having made a film that villainized progressives. The film doesn't. It's about a bunch of rude political internet commenters who get abducted by crazy rich people who are even more violent and political. It's like politics on Twitter or imageboards turned into a real-world violent struggle. Most of the characters are aggressive, close-minded jerks. Some just have no filter for spouting off divisive political opinions, others are hardcore activists whose life is devoted to politics. A few are simply unhinged, angry people who use politics as an excuse to hate. They're on all sides in this movie. It's a selling point of this movie that it's political without taking sides, and they could have played that up. A political movie you can see with friends and family even if they don't agree with your politics, and you can all enjoy it and argue about it later.
The filmmakers really should have defended the film from charges of partisanship from both the right and the left before it was released, so that it would have gotten a fair shake in the media. It deserved better buzz. Unfortunately, it seems like bad marketing caused it to flop.
Although I could be wrong. It's not that great of a movie. The political theme is really just a theme for a rather unsurprising survival action movie. It would have been better if the political satire was used for more than decoration. It feels like it was pretty much just exploited to capitalize on public interest in politics during an election year. It depicts politics without having a single interesting thing to say about politics. Nor does it offer a carefully observed portrait of politics. It's just a survival action movie with a theme of American politics. But I got a kick out of it. It's enjoyable and many people wrote it off as being politically off-putting. But it's less offensive and politically partisan than most other movies like this, despite the emphasis on politics. This film has no agenda but to be violent entertainment for the masses. It's successful enough to achieve it's low ambitions. There's no brilliant satire here, but it would have been a fine little movie to catch on a Summer weekend afternoon at a multiplex.
Hollywood, give Betty Gilpin more roles. You can tell just from her last line in this clip that she's star material. She elevated this otherwise forgettable (but fun) movie.

I've seen Betty Gilpin in a few things over the years, and if it's a small or large role, I'm always captivated(few have that effect). So after seeing this clip, I was sold, and after watching the movie, I must say it was better than I thought it would have been.
