- On Friday, the Congress party released its manifesto for the upcoming Lok Sabha polls. From promising to recognise civil unions between queer individuals to a nationwide socio-economic and caste census to giving legal guarantee to MSP and scrapping the Agnipath scheme, here’s what we found most interesting.

What part of this manifesto did you find interesting?
Would have liked to see more bottom-up development proposals for social upliftment (creative, evidence-based education and healthcare schemes for eg.) rather than relying on a reservation-based plan. Could see things like 50% reservation for women hurting minority communities in the long run--achieving equality in a way that reinforces divisions rather than helping to eradicate them. All for affirmative action as part of a comprehensive solution. Happy to see a LGBTQ+ supportive agenda and at least intentions of restoring all kinds of freedoms (journalistic, faith-based etc.)

@@swaminathank2727 In India, the supply of agricultural produce especially wheat and rice is way above the demand. So its never going to be profitable and the solution lies in moving towards non-traditional produce like oilseeds, millets and corn and for this to happen, we need private investment.

The Congress party has taken a very worrying leftward turn. Rahul Gandhi also said we are a socialist republic. Socialism is a failed ideology. And it was Congress who brought in liberalisation of the economy which has led to India enjoying a healthy growth for 3 decades. They shouldn't walk back on that and move again towards failed socialism.
i think nehru's stance of 'mixed economy' (socialism+capitalism) is the way to go.
capitalism is imp for wealth creation but when u need to provide ration to 80 cr ppl, u have to have socialism of some form in ur governance for their upliftment.

@@allent4627 welfare isn't socialism. Socialism means abolishing private ownership. That's the textbook definition of the word. Social ownership of means of production which obviously excludes private ownership. In a poor country like ours the government has a duty to care for and look after our poor. That isn't socialism. The three decades of growth has brought hundreds of millions out of crushing poverty. The middle class is much better off today than it was in 91. Every section of society today is much better off. Socialism always and without exception has been an abject failure in any place it was tried and every wealthy country where even the most poor have a decent basic standard of living are without exception capitalist countries.

Great analysis! Factual and unbiased! I think that this manifesto is too vague and doesn't mention enough specific plans so it may turn off many voters instead of courting them. India is a country who feeds 80% of the population using the tax earned from just 20% of the population. Other than the basic welfare of education, health and social well-being India needs to spend on creating sustaining long term infrastructure while the citizens should find ways to use these infrastructure to create jobs for themselves and fellow citizens. We are not a developed nation so we should prioritise our needs. I do not support all the politics of hate and division bjp is playing to get votes but the work they are doing is really the best as of now.

@Faye I must complement both your analysis on ED and the Manifesto. Unfortunately I must say that this is a babu manifesto, sensible in many places, but conservative, contrasting it with BJP’s usually outlandish commitments which the country seems to love.

Manifesto is a good reflection of feedback RG & party received during the Bharat Jodo Yatra. Party has collated it very well. Janta should be pleased.

After hearing this I am definitely not voting congress. Seems like a perfect socialist state. History has shown it does not work.
I am a traditional congress supporter across 3 generations,(from my Great Grandfather) it is disappointing what the Congress party has become - In ensuring that the The Deserved will all go abroad because everything is for the 'Reserved' and similar schemes which seem so benevolent but will be the root cause of failure. - Freebies 😢
If the Congress is able to convince the people about its manifesto (Janta's manifesto) it will benefit. And at the same time exposing the BJP about its unfulfilled promises and scams, by door to door campaigning in every nook and corner of the country.
Thing is they did deliver but also pushed their agendas and the latter we didn’t agree to.
All the freebies announced are not for everyone in the country. After applying all restrictions only single digit percentage of people will get them. But people vote crazily thinking that they will get them all.
This is how people gets fooled by political parties. This is happened in Karnataka, Andhra Pradesh, Telangana. Now these states including Kerala has no money to pay salaries of its employees. They will sell off country means you, people.

@@dinesh6489 yes. Most people think themselves as poor as they have white ration card, no home etc. but what government identifies as poor is different. For example If some one is getting one benefit government declares they are not eligible for other scheme.
Ex: In AP there is a pension scheme as part of election promise, but many of the real pensioners (who were getting pension before election) were removed because their son is filing income tax returns(i.e., he has job) so these parents are not able to draw a single penny of pension. forget about increased pension.
