- While polishing up a few things that have bothered me I decided to take a look at adding Robotron 2084 to my Smash TV arcade cabinet. I went with the FPGA solution that gave me a Jamma compliant pcb and then had to head back to RiddledTV to pick up a new Jamma switcher.

I hope youre very well and all your family as well .seeing your Williams line up of all the Williams coin ops , is very pleasing to see although in reality, myself it would be Defender,robotron 2084, smash tv at a Push maybe total carnage and joust .
I love Eugene jarvis designs it what I grew up with just seeing and hearing white noise pulsating nirvana !!

That’s a really kind message man and I greatly appreciate it. I have a few more videos in me this year. As you pointed out it just gets harder now that my time is split so much between real life things.

I give this video a 10/10... 2 reasons. 1 - Robotron 2084 is my favorite arcade game of all time. 2 - You showed us yet another amazing FPGA solution to get up and running. Just awesome man. Didn't even know that thing existed until today. I'm tempted to put a machine together just for that Robotron 2084. I'm jealous sir! Keep it up 😉

That’s a hell of a setup. This is the kind of stuff some people want to deny because it dissolves the narrative you mentioned, that you can only have one game in a cabinet. A common 1Up validation tactic. And that it’s not about proving superiority as much as it is shedding light on the actual existent options. People are weird.
LOL. It can be done without emulation and is possible. That’s all I was trying to highlight. I’m not mentioning names. 😂
that is pretty cool. the whole video i was thinking "look at all the effort it takes to make something else act like neo geo" then here comes the "you guys have heard of neo geo right" comment ha-ha. very cool though I didn't know you could hook up multiple boards to a switcher unit.
I have all three games, original boards in my Smash TV cabinet. I wired my Robotron onto a Jamma harness. All switching on a Riddle TV switcher. I’m super happy with this set up and cabinet!

Always cool to get a reply from the video author! I’ve had my cabinet for a little over a year. It was just a Smash TV with some restore work previously done to it. Side art was good. The CPO was not a good reproduction so I went with a much better repro print I found. I repainted the top, back and front. Did a full coin door restore, tube was good, original marquee and glass bezel. Marquee was sun faded so I picked up a great repro. I went with the 19” cabinet bezel scaled up to 25” . I sent glass to Szabo and had him put the camera style bezel on it. It does cover the corners which mainly just affects Robotron but I have gotten used to moving my head to see what is going on under there, lol. I swapped out the dry joystick grommets with ones made from a guy online that uses a different material less likely to dry out over time. Super smooth movement and less friction on your hands for long play. I rebuilt the Robotron sound board and power supply with fresh parts for the ones that fail. I replaced all of the headers on the boards. I was able to drop the +5 voltage around .2 volts just because it wasn’t running through those old headers. Also did the battery kit to prevent issues with battery leaks. I didn’t do the memory conversion because mine was still good but I have the kit as a backup. I really like meticulous restores of games which is why I like your channel. We’re probably similar in age. I have restored a ton of games. Looking forward to more of your videos. Also if you know someone who is looking for a complete Virtual Fighter 1 board set I have one. I saved it from someone who was repurposing the original cabinet for a multi-game 🥲
I remember at Alpha Beta they had a DK Jr and Robotron 2084. My mom would give me a quarter and before you knew it I’d be back in line waiting or just watching the attract screens.
It’s a tough game for a kid. I was similar with Smash TV, particularly jumping in on later levels with older kids. Money went fast.
And here I thought my console setup was complicated…this is pretty awesome. Always love some Robotron
I’m sure it’s every bit as a mess of wires as this is. Not shown in the video? The monitor went out and I had to rig a Chinese clone chassis up just to finish filming this. Good times.

I saw your post about that and the marquee. There are boards to convert those games to Jamma correct? It’s added expense but would open up options for switchers I suppose. Good luck!

I think it’s a great idea you do often in your cabs how you get games that have similar controls and then put them in one cabinet

I'm grateful for my SF2CE-themed MAME cab, but, without MAJOR cab modifications, there's no way I can enjoy twin-stick shooters with multiple players. So, as usual, I suppose I'll continue to live vicariously through you, Scarlet Sprites. I've always appreciated your passion for this scene coupled with your impressive capabilities to actually tackle rather significant projects, so please keep the RUclips content flowing! Now, is it worth keeping my fingers crossed for another restoration video set to music...?
The control panel is really the key to what goes inside. I’d agree that a 2P six buttons panel grants access to sooo many games but twin sticks, trackballs, and spinners will add more complexity. As a side note, MiSTer will allow you to use the 1P and 2P stick as “twin sticks” in certain cores. It solves some but not all problems.

@@ScarletSpritesMAME does allow me to config my P1 and P2 joysticks to act as 2 x 1P sticks for twin-stick games; but, as a result, that eliminates my options for more than one player. And I'm simply not skilled enough--nor do I have the tools--to go about adding trackballs and spinners to my panel.
Looking forward to the UMK3 vid, even if it's not set to music; though that sure seems like a missed opportunity to use the legendary MK movie theme by The Immortals...
Great video. I'm still waiting impatiently for Total Carnage and Smash TV cores so I can play them on Mistercade. We're getting close on the Total Carnage hardware and I'm excited bc I really love those twin stick games. Recentlt commissioned a custom twin stick panel for Sega candy cabs to support those games. Can play the SNES Smash TV port right now and it's fun but it's not quite the experience I'm looking for. It'll be a happy day once those Midway arcade cores are finally ready to go.
Next best thing for me to what looks like an amazing Smash TV cab you've been showing off. I wish I had the space for a dedicated twin stick cab.
It’s funny, after playing the arcade version for a while I realized how much better I like the SNES port’s music. Getting these cores on MiSTer will be awesome. The boards are getting more and more expensive each year.

I hear you. I really tried for more than a year with it. The corners are just so important though. There are some other custom bezels where the cameras don’t extend out. I think I’m going with plain smoked glass though.

Very cool. I’m a big fan of Gauntlet Seven Sorrows. My only complaint is that it is so short. Also, I had more fun with Mortal Kombat Shaolin Monks than actual Mortal Kombat games from the same era which kinda plays like a Gauntlet/3D beat-um-up game.
I don’t think I knew Seven Sorrows existed. I’m pretty weak on the libraries in the mid oughts. I’ve never played Shaolin Monks either.

Excellent cabinet!!! How do you handle voltages? especially the 5v?
Nothing too fancy. It’s just a Meanwell switching power supply and I measure at the board. Everything is running 5.0X and has been stable.
Is there a multi board that has all of the twin stick shooter arcade games?
Not that I’m aware of.

Thanks man! Im going to replace the bezel and CPO at some point and then this is “done.” For now.
Ball-top sticks are period accurate? My heart says yes, but my mind thinks Street Fighter and goes back to bat-top. (Were there even 4-way bat-top sticks?) Then again, I know those old Midway Pac-Man cabs had a ball-top, but they definitely weren't Sanwa.
As for playing these games without a dedicated cab... short of making your own control panel, I think AllFightSticks can make a custom twin-stick layout. Can you tell us the distance between the two sticks in case we ever want to scratch this itch?
They are, it uses 8way Wico sticks. These are reproductions with leaf switches inside. I even went through a few grommets until I found ones that were closer than the stock repros. It’s as good as it gets without having originals imo.
I’ll have to get back to you on stick distance. I know some MiSTer cores allow the 2P stick to be used as the second twin stick in a pinch.
