I'm glad it wasn't human activity that wrecked the hot springs in New Zealand, but sad they were wrecked. Mammoth Hot springs in Yellowstone park is a similar formation, and it is beautiful and fragile at the same time.
Technically "frig-ate", but the a is often pronounced as a schwa, an "uh" - as in "about" when said "uh-bout", and any number of other words it can be found in. Tom Scott did a great video either about it or containing it, in his Language Files series (which is coming to an end 😓). Well worth watching the whole series even if you're not into linguistics!
@@MorbinNecrim86seems like you could have done some research on the differences between australians/new zealanders. its called the pin/pen in linguistics and is unique to the New Zealand accent.

Please, PLEASE look into correct pronunciation of Te Reo Māori! There are so many resources online that can help with how to say the words. I haven’t heard someone say May or ee in so many years and less than 30 seconds research is all that is needed.
I had never heard of the "Mental Floss" channel before today. This video suddenly popped up on the front page of my RUclips feed. I thought it sounded interesting. The talking head presenting this topic says she is the "Editor-In-Chief" of the channel. That means she's responsible to ensure everything she says is accurate, right? That's what an editor does. So how is it that the Editor-In-Chief doesn't know how to pronounce 'frigate?' (2:33) Here's a hint ... it's not like 'fry-gate.' It's like 'frɐ gɐt.'
just FYI, your pronunciation of "Maori" is way off. It isn't "May-or-ee". Instead, for non-native speakers, think of Chairman Mao. Chairman Maori. Not 100%, but leagues better than how you say it now 👍
As was said before and will be said again....your pronunciation of so many of these words is an embarrassment. Reflects so poorly on a site that prides itself on educating people.
I see a lot of folks commenting on your pronunciation of certain words. Personally, I'm used to it as most of the Mental Floss video hosts have mangled the pronunciation of words, including John Green. I'm a little more disappointed by the fact that a respected publication like Mental Floss is still promoting the debunked the racist theory of the Bering Strait land bridge. It's been refuted for generations by indigenous people, and has been rejected by respected academics for the last 20 years at least.
Love the show and the way you present. Hate the blonde highlights. Been waiting months for that trash to grow out and you go back to your natural (brown hair) look. Keep up the good work on the show though.

The "Old Man Of The Mountain" was minted on the US quarter...shortly before it fell apart.
I got to see it as a kid. so glad I did. It was amazing.
A+ video!

Isn't it "FRIG-et" like a ship?
Yup.

Awesome video but.. pronounciation for the New Zealand segmemt really needed some research
Yeah but all New Zealanders need to do research on how to pronounce simple words like; yes, six, chips, etc. so, unlucky.

I have never heard an Australian born Aussie unironically say “sex” instead of “six” or “fush and chups”. Those are classic Kiwi pronunciations.

What? It isn't French Fry Gate? I'm shocked. SHOCKED! Well, not that shocked,

Not how you pronounce Māori fyi
THANK YOU!
So I would have assumed what she said. The correct way is?
Can you please enlighten us that don't know?
Te reo Māori is largely phonetic. So… ˈmaːɔɾi.
I cringed
Pronunciation notzis everywhere. No one can pronounce all the worlds languages. In English we say May or ee.
But there's absolutely no way you've lived your life and never heard the word Maori pronounced a billion times

2:30 & 2:55. French Fry Gate Shoals?
Its Frigate (fri'·guht), as in the class of ship. Its not where McDonald's harvests fries.
French frygate was worse than Watergate and pizzagate
