A couple of things worth mentioning here I think. One is that the machine gun fire from the plane was directed far over the heads of the approaching troops, who were actually billeted at the pub, not drinking there. The German crew were buying time, and not trying to hurt anyone. The troops who first approached the plane had not even bothered to take their rifles with them as no one expected any trouble from the Germans. The crew were aware that if they had actually hit one of the soldiers coming towards them it would have certainly ended badly for them. The soldier who translated the chat from the Germans was a Pole who had been attached to the London Irish when he escaped to Britain in 1939. In 2011 the London Irish had a ceremony at the pub to commemorate the 70th anniversary of the encounter. I was lucky enough to meet a couple of people who had witnessed the event itself, including a man who, as a young boy, had watched the Germans arriving through an open window of the pub. He told me that the Germans were bought a round of drinks and offered some of their insignia and badges as souvenirs to the Irish. I have been the Landlord of the pub (The Sportsman) since 1999.
The British soldiers welcomed the prisoners to their country by treating them to drinks and having a pleasant meal together at a nearby pub before turning them over to the M.P.s. That is exactly the kind of "British attitude" that causes this old "Yank" to respect and love his Brit cousins! BTW, I would LOVE to be able to see the looks on the faces of the bartenders and waitresses in that pub when THAT group came in, took tables and called for service! Bet they were absolutely PRICELESS!!!
The one(which was actually ten) reason, why the nazi aircrew were looked after by the British public, after they were shot down, was the £10-0s-0d which they got, for every pow that the authorities could interrogate..!..!..!.. Because, there was a few cases of pilots/aircrew being finished off, and this had possibly happened, to one or two Polish/Dutch or other Eastern Europe pilots, because the locals didn’t know the difference between them and nazis..!..!..!.. So, the government decided, that if they offered a good sized bounty,(and £10-0s-0d was a very handy amount of money, especially in those days of war), then the British people, would be more than happy, to keep the pow’s alive and well..!..!..!..

Still, I think keeping the prisoners "alive and well" doesn't necessarily include treating them to drinks and a "pleasant dinner", so I still have to admire the "British attitude" in this case. BTW, I understand why the government offered an 'incentive' of ten pounds to civilians to dissuade them from taking vengeance on German aircrew considering the German bombings of civilian targets. This aircrew, however, was captured by military personnel who were required by the Geneva Convention to treat prisoners in a humane manner. (At least in theory.) Due to that, I'm curious to know if that 10 pound 'incentive' was also paid to the military or was it only offered to civilians? Again, thanks for the interesting addition to my knowledge of history.

I am not sure about the regular forces(I will check it out), but I am sure that they paid the Home Guard, so it’s possible that everyone was able to claim this bounty, and this could account for the treatment in the pub..!..!..!.. Because, back then, there was 12d(d = pence, but I don’t know why) to the shilling, and 20 shillings in the pound, and at the most on average they would’ve paid about a shilling a pint(depending on strength of beer, and the year in question) this is around 200 pints per pow captured..!..!..!.. And, because drinking beer is a British pastime, it would mean that the ability to buy so many pints, would have to be celebrated immediately, especially with the people who made it all possible, mainly because no British person, would’ve been willing to wait for a few hours to get rid of the pow’s, mainly because, closing time wouldn’t have been waiting with them........ ;-) So, the only way to keep an eye on them, and drink too, is if they take them to the pub with them, (and even now, we don’t like to see people in the pub, who are not drinking), and because the gerry’s wouldn’t have had the old £ S D, then their captors would’ve been obliged to buy their beers..!..!..!.. On top of this, is the fact that the youngsters of the day, would’ve been very conversant with many stories from WWI, about how captured pilots on both sides, were wined and dined, before being sent to their pow camp, which is likely to have been a part of the situation..!..!..!..
Read up on what the German sailors on board KMS Admiral Hipper did to the survivors of Hms Gloworm for instance and you'll discover that it was hardly the preserve of the British to show humanity towards the captives. In fact the Germans were just as, if not more humane in their treatment of British POWs than the British themselves. Just that this fact is a little awkward for Hollywood to handle

@@claas.relotius Reckon those « treated » to taste local Kent beer were fortunate in that people in general military as well as civilian in Britain had little idea of how their prisoners’ country was treating their prisoners in the like of Bergen Belsen the discovery of which in the closing months of the War shocked and astounded the vast majority of people in Britain. Still, that said, they might have been lucky, had they fallen among people who would correctly reason that a) they most probably had no direct involvement and b) they were entitled to pow treatment determined by the Geneva convention. Even so, they were fortunate not to receive the extreme treatment dealt out to some poor RAF airmen in Germany shot dead and out of hand following the decree (by Go-bollox I think…) to do so for its brief duration before being rescinded. Germans, to generalise a little, but to hell with it, appear to have a tendency to be the first to commit atrocities and then later point accusatory fingers at not dissimular events given back at them by their enemies. Grew up just down the road from Graveney, this battle had been a well kept secret by the locals....the story almost passed into legend until it was acknowledged 70 years after the fact....and yes they did buy them beers before they were picked up by military personnel!!
Absolutely loved this video, felt like it had a western vibe about it. Corner the bad guys, make it so they can't go anywhere, shoot it out. The bad guys realize they have no hope and surrender. The sheriff gets his man! I know not quite and this was real, but its there. Once more you amaze with the quality of your work and dare I say you have improved so much since I have started watching. In Italy during ww2 my uncle Jack was under bombardment, a shell went off close to him the officer came along to check, and said you look a bit white. Jack turned round and the officer saw he had a big piece of shrapnel in his stomach. He radioed the medics but with 88s blazing away they said couldnt do it. Suddenly a guy jumped in an ambulance, and drove down the top of the trench the 88s let him through. Picked him up and drove back saving his life.
Brits fighting Germans then buying them a pint is a good one. There was also US Military fighting each other in the "Battle of Bamber Bridge". Where US Military tried to enforce color separation in the local pubs to stop Black US Servicemen drinking in Pubs used by White US Servicemen. The pub landlords agreed to separation and put up signs outside all the local pubs that said "Black Troops Only! " Probably not quite what the US Military were aiming for😂 Sadly the incident at Bamber Bridge cost one soldier his life and several others were wounded. My understanding is that race tensions caused by color separation back in the US were heightened when Black troops found themselves warming welcomed and accepted gratefully by the general population in England who saw them as, all fighting on the same side.

Given the date of the engagement, the model actually involved would be an A-1 model, which most notably did not have a bulged rear canopy with twin rear mg's with armored protection, and had metal VDM props with thinner chord blades than the subsequent wood props.
The grandfather of an old friend, put an ounce of 7 1/2 chill shot into the stomach of a German pilot, killing him within a minutes time. the Dornier bomber crash landed on a beach and the crew got out okay. His grandfather's Home Guard unit approached the Bomber crew and the German pilot declared that they would not be taken prisoner by civilians. The pilot tried to pull his pistol so his grandfather shot him in the stomach from six feet away. None of the other Germans had any problem with surrendering, his grandfather said.
Yeah, like that was going to go on very long. Holed up in a crashed thin-skinned aircraft until ground forces turn it into a Swiss cheese. Time to go to the local pub for a beer, indeed.
Something is very wrong with the story or the timeline - at 04:18, the sun was rising, which in September is around 7:30am. Then at 06:08, soldiers were enjoying a pint at a pub when they heard the plane crash. Now, they may have been soldiers and the country was at war, but nobody drinks beer for breakfast.
I was thinking that too at first, but perhaps those troops came off duty from a night guard shift, and so were actually having supper before going to bed?
The intel on the plane only confirmed to the allies that the german inventor of the allies' much lauded Norden Bombsight, had used the same tech in the German bombsights.
Respect to both sides here! Imagine the discipline the Germans had when they placed the demolition of the secret device ahead of their own safe surrender. Also the way the British handled the situation was amazing. They realized that the Germans followed their orders and their intention was to destroy the plane not the soldiers.
I guess since there were no casualties on the British side and only one injured German, the British figured they might as well take them out for a drink. Maybe the Germans earned some respect by not surrendering?
How about a story about the German invasion of Norway and the events that led to the movie "Into the White" where British & German aircrews who were shot down.
Actual description of events starts 3:30 in a nine minute video... I understand the algorithm needs padding but a context opening doesnt need to take a third of the video, perhaps consider putting two stories in one?
@@frankbutaric3565 idk much about pilot parachutes and their gear but airborne, paramarines and multiple other paratrooper units where already a thing by then, so parachute although static line worked for infantry

Also the way the British handled the situation was amazing. They realized that the Germans followed their orders and their intention was to destroy the plane not the soldiers.

Bailing out back in the day was not that safe. Shit parachutes only slowed down the descent not like modern chutes that you can pick a landing site
