Not every film needs female empowerment and representation. The film is set in the military with is a male environment but yes women are in the military and you did have that depicted in this film. It shouldn't be an issue that Phenoix didn't have a bigger role because she was just as important to the story as all the other male pilots. She was not sexualized or objectified. Just saying not every area of representation is going to be in every movie you watch.

The only thing with the pilots was they're appearance of cockiness. When Phoenix said we're all the best, who are they going to get to teach us, no fighter pilot (especially a Topgun graduate) would ever say that. And Hangman was just a douche who looked out for himself, at the expense of his team. Fighter pilots are humble, focused and consummate professionals. There was a lot of hidden animosity between some of the pilots, which isn't very realistic either. But, they needed to create tension for the sake of the story.

I'm conflicted by Grace's comments at the end about the female pilot and 'not making enough of her'.
Equality means they should be treated equally - and I think she had similar screentime to the other secondary characters (less than Rooster but the same as the other pilots who flew the final mission). If they had singled her out and made her 'better' or given much more screentime to her than the males, that would have been seen as pushing a message. I'm not American, but I am ex-military and I loved this film. I also saw the women in my cinema (maybe 30/70 female/male split) cheer, laugh and react just as excitedly as us guys did.
The poster shows a poc pilot and a female pilot, at the same size as the others - isn't that the equality that we are wanting to achieve in cinema?

I've been around may 50 like her character and they don't necessarily excel, but they aren't the worst either. They play it safe and have other priorities in life, so you can't expect them to be like Maverick (or their real life male counterparts) simply because women don't have the same interests. Maverick was also doing his own aircraft maintenance in the movie, women rarely if ever learn to do this as pilots. I've never seen a single one.

First off, Maverick chose the female pilot as the one he trusted to do the mission at the end. What do you mean she wasn’t significant? Just because she didn’t outshine every male character doesn’t mean she didn’t have a pivotal role in the film. I don’t see any reason why that is a point to be brought up but whatever

    • @hunsters1705

Exactly! It's like she expects Phoenix to suddenly be imbued with captain marvel powers and blast through the enemy jets with an infinity stone, and the whole world stood up and clapped. Absolutely ridiculous expectations from Grace.

    • @maxhirsch7035
      @maxhirsch7035 2 года назад

She wasn't narratively significant, is what I think Grace is pointing out. She's portrayed as highly competent, but not of particular narrative interest- and this is a reasonably narrative-driven film. To be fair, most of the men like Hondo, weren't really either- Tom Cruise tend to be very much about Tom Cruise, often with minor exception- The Edge of Tomorrow being a somewhat larger exception. Still, the proportion of elaborated male characters to elaborated female characters in big Hollywood films is still fairly lopsided.

Grace Randolph, who also said there should be a female hedgehog in the sonic movies, complained about the lack of females in Top gun: Maverick. Grace admitted that she knew this movie would be about Maverick facing his demons when he is forced to teach Rooster, the late Goose's son. There was a subplot about Maverick meeting Iceman again, used to illustrate why Maverick didn't seek to be promoted beyond being a "captain." There was a movie called An Officer and a Gentleman. That movie didn't need many female characters to provide a good story. Grace is up to her usual habits to demanding more females in movies. I don't see her demanding more males in the movie 355.

The story was about Maverick and Rooster….I don’t understand people feeling the need to shoehorn female characters into every single story as a super important character, It isn’t always needed. The female characters in this movie were great IMO. Go watch a current marvel movie if you want Mary sue female characters.

I almost *never* go out of my way to go see a movie on a premium movie screen, I'm always pretty happy with my local screens. But for this one I got to see it in Imax with my parents, and it was one of the best movie experiences I ever had. The sound, the visuals, I felt like I was experiencing the flights *with* the characters instead of watching it.
It just baffles my mind that this type of movie still gets made, I always say that they don't make 'em like they used to, but this is everything I want from a summer blockbuster. Classic hollywood, in the best way possible.

In addition to the perfectly balanced narrative, inspiring visuals and superb soundtrack, Maverick also has another important aspect: he brings up a feeling that has been missing in theaters for a long time, that feeling of ''Real Cinema'' made the old-fashioned way, with few effects. The roar of the jet engines is real, the reactions of the Pilots is real, the Story for more fanciful is believable, the Emotions that surround the Characters are perfectly capable of being felt by us too (at some point in our lives, or even during the exhibition), of course not in an extraodinary context of the Navy but still are true emotions and feelings, I'm clapping because all this joins nostalgia, watching this Movie is an Experience.

Don’t agree with the critique on the female pilot: Isn’t that the goal, to not make a big deal of a gender? She was just there - like all the other guys. Not your typical „strong female character“; just one of the guys. But tbh absolutely EVERYTHING here was like an exact copy of a 90s movie - even those stereotypes, like the one female member of the group. But it was all so enjoyable, although outside the US this whole patriotism will never fully work. :-) And I hated Lady Gaga’s song, the weakest element of an otherwise awesome (!) soundtrack.

It old school as she say , lot of smiles etc. I will agree that I’d better than the first. This is not a Grace movie I am surprised that she like it. The women: I am more concerned that they were all mean, she does not mention the intentional hit to the groin by the pilot that wanted to have fun (sexual assault if the society was not also misandrist). This is an old style movie, so they did a basic inclusion / diversity points but it’s all about a story they want to tell. Everything else is soft and not get almost no time.

Here’s a little insight into military bars on base… there are unwritten rules that all military members are aware of before entering. For example, if you put your cover (hat, flight cap) on the bar, you have to buy a round of drinks for the everyone in the bar. Another example, is if someone taps a RMO (military round metal object or coin) on the bar and you’re unable to show your RMO then you have to buy a round of drinks for everyone in the bar…however, if everyone is able to show their RMO then the person that started it owes everyone a drink. These rules vary depending on service but they definitely exist and, yes, it can be costly.

Grace come on, why must there always be a female main character?

You have remember what Jennifer Connelly's character's daughter said when Tom jumped down from the window, her daughter said "Don't break her heart again." That got Maverick thinking about what direction he needed to take the relationship with Peggy. I'm definitely in the group of people who understood and accepted Jennifer's role in the movie. I thought she was beautiful, attractive, and just the right motivation for Maverick after being grounded by the Air Boss, and Maverick didn't know what to do.

I saw twice Imax and once 4DX.
Jennifer served the purpose of keeping Tom on track. Kelly could have done that, but whatever. It was fine.
Phoenix literally flew right behind Maverick on the final mission. If she doesn't do her job, the first miracle is a failure. Hangman was sitting on the aircraft carrier twiddling his thumbs while Phoenix flew the main mission. What extra does she need to do to gain respect? It's already established they are already Top Gun graduates.
When I realized the F-14 was about to be flown again... Genuine tears. Was not expecting that because a few real military pilots kept stressing the F-14 is retired and only flyable in a couple countries. They said it didn't make sense to see an F-14 in the trailer. Well, this movie took that knowledge and used it as a gotcha!
In the 80's, my friends and I loved two vehicles. The Lamborghini Countach and the F-14 Tomcat. I still have my art and posters of both.

The women thing is getting irritating now. There are people & experiences that involve no women. And vice versa. Grow up.

So disappointed Jurassic World was sold out this evening. But then my wife and I decided to leave the kids at home and take a date night to watch Top Gun. I am sooo glad Jurassic World was sold out and we went to see this! This movie is ridiculously good from start to finish. Absolutely amazing!

Omg Grace, enough with the feminist comments. The woman was chosen just like Bob. We don't anything about Bob either.... This story is about Rooster and Maverick. Of course they won't focus on women being a pilot or not.

Exactly! And I think in real life there is no female pilot in Top Gun... is there? ...Grace is never satisfied

Tom Cruise runs real fast. You should know that by now from Mission Impossible movies. Thats how he tracked Rooster super fast.

Did you really watch the movie? It was a helicopter Rooster shot down to save Maverick, not a fighter. And he knew were Rooster was because he watched him parachute down.

Great review! Basically the same thoughts I had watching itFor me this is a star turn for Miles Teller and Glen Powell; I was really surprised with their performances and I hope they get something big out of this. Val Kilmer and Tom Cruise are Hollywood legends but these young actors acted better than them in the original movie imo.
