LCpl Jones and his 'cold steel' sure got those Italian POWs moving fast out of the barracks; and Capt Mainwaring in the 'arse' to get unstuck from the escape tunnel!
It still makes me laugh! Fantastic I loved this program, growing up in New Zealand and the son of a WW2 Veteran who fought in Greece, Crete, North Africa, and Italy right up to Trieste! I could go on! and on!
Bless their little hearts! i have seen this episode countless times. yet, rewatching it now in the stupid 2020 and the pandemic crisis goin on, this episode moves me to tears. ... the Italian general in a POW camp telling the English captain who is supposed to guard him: "No, no, siamo amici!!!!" One of the most wonderful lessons in humanity, wars, stupid authorities telling us to be afraid and hate each other. this episode is a true masterpiece
the music, the suberb acting, the catch phrases, the true history if i had died and not seen this show i would have felt deprived of a true masterpiece bravo 3 cheers and more 4 dads army
Yes, an absolutely ridiculous situation at that.. We poke fun at the French for their tendency to surrender, but compared to the Italians they are true heros...
Can anyone name the episode where all the men have medals but Capt Mainwaring does not for some parade?I think they challenge Capt Squares Eastgate platoon on some manoeuvres.thanks.
At 12:14 onwards, Sgt. Wilson and the Italian officer look and behave just like slightly different sides of the same coin. They both seem to be thinking or saying: "what the hell is that idiot Manwaring making such a fuss about all the time..?" I think it was intentional.
ruclips.net/video/x7Q76TBNslI/видео.html..Its Mr Mash from Grace Brothers, after being released from the POW after the war, he joined Grace Brothers, but of course he knew young Mr Grace while in Walmington.
Long disused by the state of the place. If it was in 1940 it would not have been overgrown with grass , weeds and filthy windows. The BBC should have spent 15 minutes clearing the weeds etc from the shooting scenes. Too lazy probably. As such it just looked like 1970.
Clive Dunn took inspiration from his days in the British military; there was a real life Lance Corporal who was always half a measure behind the remainder of the company in his drill. He worked it into the character of old Jonesie here. I think it’s a hilarious character attribute 🤣🤣
Yes John Ringham portayed private bracewell (who purchased a watch for his wife's birthday from walker) in the first episode then later appeared in 2 episodes as captain Bailey.
Yep, we make fun of the French and their renowned habit of surrendering when faced with a superior foe,but the Italians took surrendering to the next level...

I love Jonesey. "They don't like it up 'em, Cap'n! They don't like it at all!"
I fast forward when it comes to Jones, because I know exactly what he's going to say. You can have too much of a good thing.
Superb nothing like it now good comedy is in the past
5:04 That's Mr. Mash from Are You Being Served!
The final part of the episode always gets me!!
I loved watching this when I was a kid with my Mum.
I think this must be the one time when Mainwaring was pleased about Jones and his "They don't like it up 'em" bit , lol

this episode is a true masterpiece
Humans actions make humans hate each other.
People have choices. Being under war conditions and conscription did indeed create a forced sense of duty.

I once met an old boy, who said a lot of this silly stuff actually happened, he was in the Home Guard as a youth
@@fernbird8609 what an experience
Bailey had been one of the local defence volunteers in the pilot, episode. The chap with the golf club,
That whole marching gag was bordering on Goon Show humour in my humble opinion, brilliant.
You can see on the road the marks where they had to stand and for the camera to pan to. 3:00 mark
captain bailey is actually none other than bracewell with no.3 iron in s1e1
Walker and his schemes 🤣
This is my favourite episode and not too far removed from the truth either.
Yes, an absolutely ridiculous situation at that.. We poke fun at the French for their tendency to surrender, but compared to the Italians they are true heros...
The great Bud Flanagan in good voice for the intro music.....
Watched as a kid ..... brill
This is a great one 😂
they do not like it up 'em, sir! They do not like it up 'em one bit, sir!
11:35 This was Jones’ finest hour
They don’t like it up ‘em!

2022 now
Real quality doesn't change! 2023 November!
I like the part when captain mainwaring hits the tin cup next to the gate to get someone's Attention, and the tin cup falls to the ground.
Anarchist Atheist it's actually an olive oil container, to add to the Italian theme lol
Still great in 2021😂
when mainwaring called pike 'stupid boy' just reminded me of that opposition MP who called mrs may' stupid woman' in parliament...thats funny

Did Jones say that the hut was empty because it had the minge? If it does, i would have thought it would be full to bursting!
I am surprised too

Looks like an old RAF Station or Army base used for the POW camp.

Corporal Jones had been in the army for years and years, yet he is the worst at drill. He is always a half second behind.
Its a comedy. Lighten up.
I think it’s supposed to be a age issue!

This has to be one of the few episodes where Mainwaring gets on my nerves
Isnt that mr baily the same person as in the very first episode who signed up for the home guard, but never came back??

I’am surprised that the tower did not collapse with everyone in it.
I take it thats sarcasm?😂
dads,armv
I know its a comedy but i wonder how Capt Mainwaring got out of this mess.
Corporal Jones has only got one Shevron on each arm that denotes Lance Corporal the Rank prior to Corporal
British Rail Productions Jones was always a lance corporal, however Captain Mainwaring called him corporal because it’s easier to say
@@FionnMacCool Lance Corporals are never reffered to as Lance Corporal in the British Army, they are refferred to as Corporal
I hope Walker paid those prisoners.
😅
wow what a bruh moment
Note to self, watched 1/16.18.
Classic🖤💛❤️🇦🇺😂😅
Hahaha be nice to the poor Italians, they have no interest in fighting

Sometimes, Jones just isn't funny...
Typical English, racist stereotyping. Should be banned.
