    I'm very humbled to see that finding my recordings on RUclips inspired you to post this for us BIONICLE fans. Thank you so very much!
    It's so pleasing to the ear to finally be able to hear these in high quality, and I'm always intrigued by prototype tracks. I particularly enjoyed the alternate take on the Piraka boss battle theme, and especially that mysterious Metroid-esque track at 30:25.
    I really appreciate it when a composer is willing to go out of his way to please some of his old fans. Thanks, again!

    This soundtrack has no right being this good lmao. Even as a kid I didn't expect much from a Bionicle DS game. But while the game is actually fairly fun, the OST was always my favourite aspect of the game. I'd often find a corner of a level and just listen to the soundtrack through my headphones lol.
    Something recently reminded me of this game's existence so I started playing again and remembered how much I liked this OST, so decided to see if I could find a rip of it online. The last thing I expected to find was that the original composer posted high quality remasters of the music!

  • @RobertNestaTravaglio
    @RobertNestaTravaglio 7 лет назад +58

    Words can't describe how happy I am to have finally met the author of the music from one of my most beloved games. I'm a huge Bionicle fan, and being 12 in 2006 I just couldn't be anything but obsessed with this game: I spent countless hours on my DS, and I still do today from time to time.
    Thank you so much for the amazing work you did with Bionicle Heroes: for how humble you may think of this specific soundtrack, it was perfect for that game and for the magical word of Bionicle. Something that really helped me staying strong during the troublesome years of middle school; in short you composed the official theme of my 12th year of existence, ahah!
    And you did the music for HP and the prisoner of Azkaban, right? That was another great title from my childhood, in his GBA version.

      When I moved from the GBA to the DS, I was pretty bummed about the relatively minor increase in sound quality. Having dedicated sound channels was nice though...

    • @T3KNUG3T5
      @T3KNUG3T5 7 лет назад

      Ian Stocker how many sound channels did the Gba have compared to the ds. Cause I was told its 8 (GBA) amd 16 (DS) but im unsure about that

    • @IanStocker
      @IanStocker  7 лет назад +10

      T3KNUG3T5 The DS has a dedicated sound chip with 16 channels. GBA used the CPU for sound mixing, so it had to share processor power with the rest of the game. We would always do tests to see how many channels I could get away with, and it varied depending on the game and even scene within a game. On title screens and credits sequences I could go hog wild, sometimes over 12 channels. In-game it was usually 6-8 channels. I actually developed some tech to be able to be able to slightly increase or decrease the number of channels used, I think for Harry Potter and the Prisoner of Azkaban.

    • @T3KNUG3T5
      @T3KNUG3T5 7 лет назад +3

      Ian Stocker hmm. thats actually pretty interesting. Its nice to see that the DS didnt sacrifice CPU usage for sound like the GBA did. I do homebrews for the GBA. and I just stick with 4 as if it was a Amiga

    1. This game has some absolutely stellar tunes
    2. It's cool that the composer cares enough about it to put it out there for us all to enjoy
    3. This music is great, man, nice work. They make a good game great

    • @mr_Mmph
      @mr_Mmph 3 года назад +2

      @@marcelkonnerth2634 The O-rune? Or just the N-rune? If it's N, those are a bit of a pain to find, only being dropped by frost beetles, but they're easy enough to grind, just play the Makuta level Ice Gap over and over, it's super short and has one of 'em, so a rune will drop eventually. If it's an O, you'll just have to look through the levels very carefully with the radar.
      Hope it was helpful, if not I'm working on noting down where every collectible is to see if I can complete the game in under 10 hours some day, so more precise info should become available sometime in the future.

    9:42 Wow the clearer vibrato adds so much to this track, makes it a lot more dissonant
    Ghost also really benefits from the added clarity, a lot of the bass stuff got lost in compression
    I wonder why all those boss variants went unused? They add nice variety, and hell Reidak doesn't even *have* the boss theme play at all. I appreciate you adding all these prototype tracks, it gives good insight behind the creative process and how you finalized the style for the game, you did a great job making the whole thing purely atmospheric. I haven't played this until recently and it still immerses the hell out of me

After I got the DS game for my eighth birthday and playing through it god knows how many times, I’d try my best to manifest “Earth” and “Fire” in particular in my head while actually playing with the toys. Know that might sound a little strange, but I just wanted to say how big an impact the music from this game had on me as a kid.
    You did an absolutely incredible job with the soundtrack and just a few days ago when I played back through the game again on my 3ds I found myself being taken back to my childhood. Party by the gameplay, but most of all by the music. The feeling of pure nostalgia I had when hearing “Air” for the first time in over a decade is something I can safely say I’ve never experienced. Hope you see this and thank you so much for crafting such an amazing soundtrack. It’s absolutely brilliant

    Hey, a couple of places credit the composer for this game as Tom Miller. Are they mistaken for the GBA version composer, or is it a pseudonym of sorts?

      I believe he made the music for the GBA version of this game (completely different design). Through a mistake, my name never made it to the credits list, so very few people knew I wrote the music for this game, until I chimed in and introduced myself on another youtube video's comments section.

      Your name did make it to the game's end credits though. However, it was under "Sound Designers" with a few other people and there was no specific composer credits.
      Apparently even the game's manual misattributed the music composition to Tom Miller and Ian Livingstone.

      Ah yeah. Poor Tom had to set the record straight on one of the GBA OST videos too-- he also got accidentally credited as Livingstone. 😓

      I have been getting lots of requests for song extensions lately... not sure when I will have time for it but it's nice to know there are tracks people want to listen to on repeat

      @@IanStocker I know it's basically a part of Machinery, but the main theme made the way it is sounds so perfect, I used to listen to it on repeat on my DS not even playing the game. I'm talking hours. Over the years I have listened to the OST many times and played through the game more times than I care to admit. Thank you for the amazing memories that are still very much present to this day!

    24:50 I can still hear Hakann's cocky laugh. Hands down probably the coolest boss fight in the game.
