A lifetime ago, I had a thermostat stick open in the dead of winter in a 3100-powered Grand Prix that I owned. I didn't have a garage at the time, so a buddy and I drove that GP to a local self-service car wash to change out the thermostat. Needless to say I did NOT have that awesome U-shaped wrench to get the "bitch" bolt out and ended up taking 2 hours (and tons of curse words) to change out that damn thermostat!! In hindsight, it was totally irresponsible on my part to just dump the coolant directly into the car wash's floor drain 😳but it was equally comical having my buddy be the "lookout" to keep wandering eyes out of the bay we were hogging 🤣..
When burping the coolant on my Model 3 I just used a shop vac. It took a while, but it turns out the coolant fill was the same size as the hose on my shop vac...
Thanks for that tool tip. Just ordered mine and will try the thermostat again. I originally tried to do it with a small wrench could not get that bottom bolt off.
Very nice repair!. Fresh coolant is a nice touch to the repair, unless it was changed last year. I change the coolant in mine and my wife's vehicle every 2 to 3 years. Keeps nasty cooling system leaks or other problems away. Like engine oil, coolant is cheap! Engines are expensive!
The first and only time I’ve ever had to do this was on my daughter’s 2004 Pontiac Aztek. It’s been a few years now, but I believe I use a stubby wrench for the bottom bolt. The bleeding was a bit of a pain.
I miss my Pontiac Grand Am because it was mostly reliable until it got totaled. The 3.4L has the easiest water pump location and replacement of any engine.

Monday, when the auto garage rep was on the phone with warranty people, they denied all repair costs again but informed us of the recall for the pvc issues. I paid for the evaluation and a tow truck to get it home, and it still sitting in my driveway. I was never told about a recall when the car lot sold it to me.
