  • Cognitive-behaviour therapy involves a specific focus on cognitive strategies such as identification and modification of maladaptive cognitive errors and restructuring of core beliefs and/ or representations of the self. Further focus is on behavioural strategies that are designed to activate clients in the environment with a view to effect desired behaviour change.
    Presented in an authentic and flowing style, this video incorporates a role play demonstrating the key techniques of Cognitive-behaviour therapy -- demonstrated by counselling professionals and including captions of the specific skill as it is demonstrated.

    By asking her the question that’s going on in her life , most importantly what her values are , and getting her to write on the board making her visually, what is important to her staying track on what is important to her. Love his technique of conversation. 12:20

    Jump from A to C: I’m not good enough.
    Focus and look from another point of view: what r u doing well & succeeding in?
    R u successful most of the time? What’s the evidence that shows that. What does this evidence say in comparison, to dispute that belief ie ‘C’: what kind of decision goes along with that? Talk about your successes
    Keep saying that statement daily, reprogram your brain to recalibrate your belief system
    Beliefs we often use.
    Which one stands out the most: put in your own words: is that different from what’s happening in your life atm
    If no ? is an expectation, how do u measure up?

    As a counselling diploma student, I have some confusion about the "belief'.
    I heard the core belief is "I need to be successful all the time.". And this belief will bring the further negative thought and feeling that "I am not good enough.". "I am not good enough" is not a conscious belief and it is more a negative feeling about ourselves.
    One alternative option is to have the specific irrational belief with the message "I need to be successful all the time."
    It seems much obvious and effective to dispute this "successful" belief.
    It is for sure more powerful to deal with message "I am not good enough". While we can save it for a proper situation when needed.
    Thank you very much for sharing this role play. It helps me a lot.
    And that is great enough.

    That was not a dispute. He affirmed her belief that "I must be good enough" and i AM good enough. A dispute would be if she said, "I am human. I dont HAVE to be be competent and successful in ALL the things". i can just try my best.

    I would never minimize a persons struggle by comparing it to my own.. Our struggles may be different, but the emotions behind them are the common thread. We are all on our own journey, which brings our unique set of difficulties. Identify your struggle, and overcome it. Period.

    Can CBT help me rewrite the negative thinking. I consider myself a positive person, but I tend to think worst case scenario more and more to prepare myself for the upcoming loss, however, most of the time it doesn’t even get close being that bad.

    So outside of an idealised role play how many hundreds of thousands of times do you need to repeat this therapy in real life for it to be effective on someone who is actually depressed or anxious? I've done 10 sessions of CBT and they made things worse in that I don't feel any better and am also out of pocket to boot.

      I think CBT is quite a 'surface' therapy...ie doesn't really get to the real core of the issue- which is generally held/learned from childhood. I found CBT nevre worked for me because it never addressed that core belief that was driving the thoughts and behaviours.

      I feel great now, time fixed it. Changed jobs, got fitter and stopped caring about anything that was getting me worked up. I never saw a doc or psychologist after the CBT experience.

      @@blackrainbow1100 yes, and actually i've changed my perspective a bit and i do think CBT can get to core beliefs, but in my case, because of trauma, i couldnt cognitively access it myself. MOre of a focus on the physical body helped for me, because thats where the trauma was stored, and kinesiology also helped tremendously, because I didn't know what the core belief was and couldnt get there through talking. NOw that i have processed the major trauma, i am getting better at identifying unhealthy core beliefs, and i can see how CBT might be useful. But again, i dont feel its that useful as a stand alone therapy for someone that has quite deep unprocessed trauma.

    I wander why no one has pointed out that this CBT model is premised on the fallacy that the patients thought is irrational and that they can back into successful resolution of problems by substituting a more rational thought.....whatever

      Not a fallacy. It's one of the most priven methods. You don't just tell them to replace their you show them how it's unhelpful and lead them to replace it with something helpful

    He wasted her time & money by addressing symptoms instead of root causes!
    The poor girl (& ppl generally) has been conditioned to believe the lie that to be a 'successful' person she needs to be able to do an unrealistic mountain of undertakings & acheive it all at a certain level & within a certain time frame.
    She clearly failed at being able to do all this because the load she was carrying was far too much for her to handle (all at once at the very least, & maybe she never really needs to do all these things, but only assumes she should because of ridiculous cultural expectations put on her}.
    That counsellor caused her to address & correct one lie because her worth is not lowered by her failure, but he unknowingly encouraged the lie that she can & should be able to acheive an unrealistic amount if she only believes in herself. THAT'S ABSURD, & VERY DAMAGING! EVERYONE WHO TAKES ON TOO MUCH WILL NOT BE ABLE TO DO IT ALL! Simple reality!
    Why didnt he address & let her sort thru what really is essential from what isnt essential at this point in her life, so she can just put her energy into those things, as well as helping her see that her worth as a human being is NEVER determined by what the culture determines is 'success'.

      +Susie Whitney CBT is more of a present-centered type of therapy. The purpose of present-centered therapy is to focus on the feeling of the moment and leaving behind the root causes (not bringing focus to the root causes). The idea is that, in this situation, her not being able to do everything was not the end of everything. Failing the one test did not need to completely end her college career, and her life will not always be so chaotic. It is effectively teaching her to cope with this situation and thus other situations like this without allowing it to spiral her life out of control. Present-centered therapy isn't for everyone. I'm sure you'll find a technique that suits you better than CBT.
      Also, a person's culture is always to be respected, she may feel very strongly about her cultural values and telling her that a human being is never determined by what the culture determines is 'success' may seem to invalidate her culture in her eyes. It is our jobs as counselors to work with a person's culture not against it. Unless the person involved expresses a direct interest in changing what their culture is to them.

      @@chibi1728 person centred, where exactly is this 'person'? How does a person come to be? Is the 'here and now' focus avoidant of historical causes, events and their marks/inscription? Perhaps you can 'teach' someone to 'cope' and you may then have a person alienated from their own complex set of ideations around fear, loss, failure, death and anxiety (all this is objectified thru alignment with biological evolutionary phenomena) that will repeat with no other goal except to repeat. In short, a reflection of a therapist setting aside antinomy, contradiction and deception.

    here's a few suggestions to try
    Don't take stimulants like alcohol and coffee
    Try to relax
    Do daily exercises
    Seek help from others
    (I read these and more ideas from Trevs panic fixer site )
