    A warning for the unwary: if you want to get a huge bottle of glaze medium, the professional acrylic lines have their own versions. Do not however go for Liquitex’s version as it contains a drying *accelerant* for reasons only known to their dark gods. Golden do a glaze medium that works more like the Vallejo one.

    The best validation for this video imho... I watched it a few weeks ago, and thought “wow, that’s amazing! I wish I could paint this well!”
    Then I applied the technique to six minis in the intervening period, getting better each time, and gathering some additional finishing techniques from Vince Venturella’s videos.
    Then I finally got around to painting the stormcast that I ordered when I first watched this video. So I thought I’d watch this video again to remind myself how to do it right...
    And...
    Now I look at it again a month on it feels to me like I can probably do better...
    So thank you so much! This video has been an amazing springboard and inspiration! You rock Dana!

    The consistancy of the metal is because it is an airbrush color. So it is already thinned for the airbrush and also the mica flakes are most likely a lot smaller than in normal metallics. Usually Vallejo's paints are labeled AIR if they're meant for airbrush. This one's labeled differently, but notes the airbrush on the label.
    Gold's mica flakes, the glitter, is larger like you note. The paint is 'normal'. I think the only metallic paint that has smaller mica flakes than Vallejo's metal range (the silver paint you used) is Alclad 2, but that is lacquer based.

    One note: I think they meant Matte Medium, like from Liquitex.
    For those wondering about using Matte Medium to glaze: Vallejo Thinner Medium is mostly just Matte Medium and distilled water. Vallejo Glaze Medium is the same but with flow improver and drying retardant, as Prof Howl says. :P You can glaze with both.
    If you can’t find flow improver, vegetable glycerin works in a pinch. I highly recommend adding matte medium and flow improver to your hobby arsenal to save money and create your own glazes, thinners, and washes.

      I second that. Also watch out for Glaze mediums with a gloss finish - they don’t work so well with matte acrylic. Another tip for new painters experimenting with flow improver - it usually needs to be diluted with water 10:1. Figured that out after using it neat for a while and wondering why my paint was going everywhere! It’s all one long learning curve and you must not be afraid to make mistakes. But if you can learn a few things from others mistakes there’s no harm in that either. ;-).

    Tried this by making a glaze with thinned(watered) down acrylic matte medium, but I have to go over 10+ times to get the colour to not look like 'patchy paint over black'. Using less of the home made glaze medium means I lose all of the underpainting. Also did an airbush applied gradient version, but didn't use enough thinner to dilute the paint I think, so same problem haha.
    I really like the definition and contrast I can build up in the underpainting phase, but it's a bit painful to lose it all afterwards, going to try this technique again on another test mini.

    Hi Dana, around the 5:30 mark you mention people asking about using Matt Medium in place of Glaze Medium. I could be wrong, but I think you misunderstood the reason they were asking the question (thinking they confused glaze/gloss)? I would assume that Matt Medium is just a matt acrylic with no pigment in it. So how is it different from Glaze medium? It seems like they'd serve the same purpose. For me personally, when I have tried to use glaze medium, it doesn't mix well with the paint and comes out kind of gloppy, and doesn't really seem to thin it much to use as a glaze. Maybe I just got a bad/old bottle, but I've never been able to figure out how to use glaze medium properly. Using Matt Medium has worked a bit better, though lately when I glaze I've just been adding Flow Aid and that seems to work alright. Would love to hear your thoughts as I'm still trying to "solve" glazing. Love your videos! :)

    • @andrewamann2821
      @andrewamann2821 4 года назад +3

      Blending and working the paint... The longer your working time, the smoother you can make your blends without the risk of tearing the paint. Between that, and the active open time, you can also stretch your paint a lot further into a project.
      Painting is a very time-dependent process, and managing it well helps both the quality of your outcomes, and the efficiency of your production.

    • @DanaHowl
      @DanaHowl  4 года назад +3

      I didn’t get into it much in this video (it will probably come up more when blending/highlighting in future videos) but it drying slow allows you to move the pigment around easier when blending

    • @Kungsgeten
      @Kungsgeten 4 года назад +1

      @@DanaHowl Yes I can see the case for slower drying times with various blending techniques. I was mostly wondering if the slower drying time is beneficial when doing glazes specifically? Commenting even though I haven't watched yet: I went to a local store to buy the paints listed here ( I already bought supplies for class one through your Amazon links, but got some time off work and wanted to keep going, didn't want to wait for shipping for the paints). The Dull Aluminium threw me off because it's an airbrush paint and those were in a different section, I didn't even notice until I got home - I ended up with a silver paint as replacement, Vallejo Liquid Silver. Is that going to work ok? I got a few other color replacements in Citadel also because they didn't have the Vallejo in stock, but they had a color equivalency chart so I think I'm ok there, but I'm worried about the silver, don't know if it will have the right consistency? I hope you do a video on the nature of different paints.

    Dana is 110% correct about how incredible the Vallejo METAL COLOR paints are, they are greatest thing since sliced bread. Not bad value either for the price considering the bottles are 32ml, while Model/Game colour are 17ml and Citadel 12ml.

      Lots of painters have noted how awesome the Metal Colors are, but with exception of one single "Copper" and a single "Green Gold" they're entirely the gamut of Silver/Steel/Greymetals. It's easy to mix them with other (non-metallic) colors, but it'd be nice if they expanded the range a bit.

    Like 1 part acrylic, 8.9 parts water and 0.1 dish soap. Rough estimate.
    Dish soap is a surfactant, lowers surface tension. So flows better.

      Lahmian would be your best bet!

      Yup. Lahmian is glaze.

      Jaani Kääpä thanks! Recently learned it can act as a matte varnish as well. All of this recent knowledge is removing the “buyers” remorse for paying GW prices

      Josh Becka Mediums are great. Vince Venturella has a great video on them. Flow improver is the one you want if you wish to do very detailed freehand style stuff, btb. Surfactant is, if I understood it correctly. Is what you want to make washes. As for different glossiness ratings... Get matte paints and a bottle of gloss medium. Mix the medium with the paint and you get gloss paint. No reason to separately purchase gloss paints. Cheaper to get the medium.

      Jaani Kääpä so I have airbrush flow improver...is there a difference there?

    I am a beginner figure painter. Actually I am so beginner that I have not even painted a single one in my life yet. I just realised that my boardgame minis look so boring in plastic grey and now I have a Vallejo game color intro set, skin color set and Wash set coming from Amazon. While waiting for them to arrive I have been studying religiously on how to paint and I find your style of painting (lots of focus on prepping and priming) interesting. I have never been good coloring things and mild red-green color blindness is not helping, but doing most of the work in black and white seems so easy that I have to try it. Thing is, I do not gave any Glaze coming and local gaming shop has run out according to their website. Since Glaze is to my understanding basically a varnish, would any acrylic medium-matte or medium-gloss varnish from hardware store also work for glazing paint?

    Any replacements for vallejo blue green? I find it's sold out everywhere (in Canada)

      Blue green is sold out where I am too. Army Painter Royal Cloak is probably the closest. That's also sold out where I am. I'm going with Citadel Base Temple Guard Blue. It's greener than Vallejo Blue Green, but times are tough :)

      @@DanaHowl Hey Dana! actually yeah, tried them all, but its all good, using game color turquoise instead, even if its a bit different. heard 'Vallejo Panoceania Paint Set' has it if others are looking as well.

      @@liamperrin using a 'similar' color as well too! but if anyone else is looking, 'Vallejo Panoceania Paint' set has it if anyone is reallly desperate! also nice beginner lesson too

    Hi Dana! Do you (or any of the other lovely commentors) have a preferred online source for Vallejo paints other than Amazon? Our local game store only stocks Citadel paints. (I've asked - they can't afford to carry more lines right now.) Our local art supply store doesn't stock acrylic model paints at all.

      Hi! In Canada I order from sunward hobbies, meeplemart, or thunder games and gifts, they have lots of Vallejo products. I’m not sure about other countries though

      @@DanaHowl Thank you so much! I'm in Maryland so those places aren't too far away. I'll check 'em out and make up for not giving you Amazon bucks by joining the Patreon.

    I have a bottle of army painter quickshade wash mixing medium. Does anyone know if this is the same or similar to the vallejo glaze medium?
