Hi Mark. I have an 07 E61. Had it a few months and it's been faultless. Then one day after a run into town the steering went stiff. If the car is left for a couple of hours or more it comes right but goes stiff after driving. It's not that noticable at speed but parking is like a 73 Valiant..... I did a power steering flush and bleed as the old fluid was brown but it hasn't improved things much at all. Next will be reservoir replacement as the filter would be bad due to fluid looking like it had never been changed. There is a bit of noise (not excessive) when turning the wheel. I have not inspected the rack of pump but it leaks no fluid and level hasn't changed since I changed it. I had what appeared to be the active steering dash light flash very briefly once as I crossed a railway track but nothing since and nothing on iDrive. I'm really hoping it's not the active control unit as that is EXPENSIVE. Almost every video I've watched on the topic fix the problem with a reservoir replacement. That non serviceable filter can really muck things up if it's clogged. The brief active steering dash light is a worry though. Only a split second flash one time and Ive had the problem for over a week now. Subbed to your channel and will be checking out your other videos. Cheers from New Zealand.
Okay, so I drove my X5 out in the paddock and turned sharp left & then right X3 times. and it reset the steering. No steering inactive warning signs on display. Then I also checked the steering oil, and purchased it, topped up. Sved my $$$$. Thank you so very much. 👋

Really helpful review Mark! i have a 5 series and have had that twice and i think that it was caused by me turning the wheel before the car had started, i could be wrong! Turn off and on again and all is well!

Hi Mark. What about steering pump sensor, could this be another cause? My active steering light is on and a mechanic also thinks it may be corroded loom connections between pump and ECU under floor, causing resistance issues.
This worked great. I have a 645CI and the battery died. Had that message pop up. Changed the crank shaft position sensor and your suggestion after driving the car all is working now. Thanks again👊👍

@@moeaboushagor2627 i put the fluid in the reservoir. Drove it for a bit after and it went away. I ordered the crank shaft sensor from an indy car repair shop oem part it was cheaper than the dealer.
Why did you change the crankshaft sensor? Was it faulty or just to sort the active steering fault? Would you be able to describe the fault you were getting on your steering? Dose it come on and off or just on all the time?
@@moeaboushagor2627 I received the active steering message on the console. The car was in reduced power mode and hard to steer. Another video suggested to change crank sensor. Luckily I did it was not the correct one installed when I last to it to the BMW dealer and the charged me to replace clock spring, shitt.
I will try as you said to recharge the battery and steering actively and maybe reprogramming. So if you have any other suggestions it may help i would be thankful
Mine is due to be done and strangely enough it's coincided with stiff steering appearing on my E61. Definitely going to eliminate alignment by getting it done. I used to do my own wheel alignments on my old cars with a piece of chalk and a tape measure but I'll get the Beema done by a pro.

I'had broken wires at the rear door. That can cause a low voltage on the battery... I read so forum article that says that water can come in there... Maybee thats the problem.
Happend to me this morning, car worked fine i turned it off after trying to fix faulty dtc brake sensor , due to battery but then 10 minutes later it broke , showed yellow sign and it wouldnt start , i tried a bunch of thing but what fixed it for me was i shut off everything , locked a car and tried 10 minutes again and it worked , so if anyone has problems try that. Seems stupid but it worked ... my car is BMW e90 320i . All of this happened when the buyer came to try and buy the car , my luck
Im glad you got it sorted but it does sound like your battery either needs a good charge or replacing. If the car has been sitting around for awhile it may just need a good run to charge it. MRT
Can anyone help with this problem? 612c fault code. Brake fluid level is perfect, battery power is good. Sometimes the “active steering fault” comes up as soon as I move the steering wheel, other times it will randomly appear when driving, and then some days it won’t come on at all. I have the same problem until I changed my battery for a new one with more amps. I noticed that when the batery is changed or disconected it must be coded or registered. I have not tried this.
Hey! Just wondering if your problem was linked to a bad battery or did you disconnect your battery and the fault come on? Also what was the symptoms of your fault? I have a bmw 645 and mine keeps coming on after start then it goes off after driving for a minute

The problem was caused by a water leakeage on the sunroof so the modules on the floor got wet, (complicated and expensive repair) but I believe the module that caused this was the one that is under the spare tire on the trunk, I opened it and it had oxide steams on the electronic board...
@@moeaboushagor2627 The battery was brand new, the symptoms was that the steering got hard sometimes not always until it got dead, never responded again.

You need a computer to reset and program the Module

W Esam Yes. They hate low voltage. Get your system fully charged before doing anything else drastic.
