It was only a few hours later did we first get the first news of the true extent of the disaster.
I am from India and I too remember that day. We planned to go beach as that day was holiday. Somehow we postponed to evening and by evening we got the news 😒. 10 people died from my place who went to beach and that was the 1st news on state media. We didn’t even know that it was tsunami and it affected many areas 😢
My deepest condolences to everyone involved. It's the first time I heard about the train and so many lost there. I know there was so many who were lost, but not the details of this area. The stories that I heard was for the areas of the eastern parts of the Indian Ocean.

Sri Lanka didn't have dedicated tsunami warning system until the 2004 Tsunami disaster. They did have seismic monitor system but never expected to have tsunami reached their shore.
Sri lankans did'nt have experience in tsunami waves before the year 2004. Other thing is earthquake was happen nearly thousands of kilometers away (Sumatra ) from SriLanka .
Those days srilanka never heard or witness something called Tsunami..even I didn’t believe it when news comes the waves came half a kilometer in to the land!!! 30feet high waves can you imagine the force😭
