I'm not a person who comments often, but I think I'm going to tell you all a little story today. Three days ago, I stumbled upon a.. well, not new, but not ancient, video of SidAlpha, a person whom I didn't know, who after a few videos didn't really appeal to me. That's besides the point. The point is that SidAlpha mentioned a name, Jim Sterling, and I thought to myself, "Who is that?" I was lucky enough that one of his videos came on autoplay just after, and I let it play. The music was a nice intro. Then Jim came on screen, and it only took me five minutes to say "Well, he's a bit of a prick, isn't he?" Three days later, I'm still watching this prick's videos. He's a classy prick. And he's entertaining. Well done Jim. Thank God for you!
I found out about Jim from one of Angry Joe's annual "Worst of 20XX" videos. I think it was either worst games or biggest controversy but he brought up Slaughtering Grounds and put a link to Jim's detailed coverage in the description. The rest is history. Thank god for Jim.

Time and time again I come back to this video. And every time when the montage end it makes me cry. I don't even know why. Are those happy tears, for the death of the loathed system? Or sad tears, for the Greenlight's death, and the floodgates of shovelware opening up? One thing is for certain. I will never forget those times, I will always remember James Stephanie Sterling, and I will thank god for them.

I guess it must be one of those magical graveyards that keep all their vegetation perfectly still even when there is wind. You know, the same wind you can hear over the mic and see pushing back and forwards on the green screen. Not to mention the small artifacting around Jim. Although that could be mistaken for the liquid awesome he secretes evaporating.
You know, when I think about it I momentarily believe I will miss the ability to make sure that good indie games get the recognition they deserve. But then I remember The Slaughtering Grounds, Shooter Anal Tactics, Journey of Light and similar, and it makes me want to ensure Greenlight rots in its grave forever.
Steam has communities and curator recommendations that can help with this, I think. I follow both Jim's recommendatiosn and the recommendations of the Extra Credits team, and they haven't led me wrong yet. ^_^

Ubisoft is aware of reports that the newly released logo is causing issues when used alongside certain backgrounds and is presently working on a patch to assure it shows up when placed against these backgrounds. However, those who are eager to enjoy the new Ubisoft logo before the patch is ready may purchase a cosmetic, slightly darker blue alternative. Alternatively, customers may pre-order the founders pack to gain access to the retro logo in addition to the updated, bug-free logo when it is released. If you're unwilling to purchase either of these products, I'm afraid you'll have to wait until we patch in an outline or implement bevel technology to make the logo more discernible against said backgrounds. Greenlight was an experiment. It had its successes, but in the end, it mostly failed. What's important now is for Valve to learn from it. I hope they do.
very good episode jim! I enjoyed the more dynamic camera angles, the change of scenery, and how animated you could be with that expressive cane when there's not a podium in the way.
A lot of Greenlight problems might have been fixed if Valve had banned greenlit games from using them. Of course, then Valve wouldn't have made money on those market transactions, so it's not hard to guess why they allowed it.
Blocking trading cards from greenlit games would only have stopped the trading card mills who know that they are producing crap. The devs that think they are producing something decent, the ones who get angry at people calling their games crap, would still put their games onto Steam. Though there are some that are a mix of both. Like Digital Homicide.
You know what's sad, the pony fanfiction game Ambient Prologue looked like it had far more effort put into it than most Greenlight Games. If the developers had created their own world and ideas they might have had a shot.
I remember seeing Ambient Prologue played by someone before and I didn't really think it was that bad. Did it belong on Greenlight? No. I would've loved to have played it off of another site where it wouldn't have been crapped on as much.

I don't feel like Chipper & Sons belongs in the list with the rest of the Greenlight trash. Granted, it _was_ a terrible game that was on Greenlight, but (1) Cawthon genuinely _tried_ to create something original instead of merely cynically recycling assets with the least possible effort to glue them together, and (2) he responded to criticism not with threats and forum bans, but by using the criticism to improve and go in new directions, succeeding respectably with his later -games- _media franchise_ as a result. ...and (3) his games still don't have trading cards, because that was never his business model.
Well...It's no digital homicide, that's for sure but if a game isn't very good, it must be said. Like you said before, he takes criticisim well and turned his criticism into a genuinely good idea for a series of games that has made him rich and famous, so I wouldn't feel TOO bad for the guy! ;) I mean, I WISH I could take such harsh criticism and make it successful, but it still must be said that chipper and son's is fucking scary and boring.

If you want to see terrible and/or careless video game content being made fun of, I recommend the old _Retsupurae_ videos. I have an axe to grind against _MLP,_ and in the name of respecting opinions I may disagree with, I won't address it, but I don't think _Age of Barbarians_ or _Chipper_ needs to be on the list. _AoB_ is still being sold, and it is *very much* going for a corny glam aesthetic. I assume it would be like if the old _Masters of the Universe_ cartoons were M-Rated. It was bad. _Very_ bad. But it is bad in a way that is extremely enjoyable. And just because it is bad doesn't mean it cannot be respected for the style it is trying to put on. If there is anything to hold against it, it is that some of the censor marks don't go away when the character using them is no longer on screen (such as the cowering concubine when *_that face_* happens). As for _Chipper,_ it is at least historically important - as a stepping stone that eventually got us the successful _Five Nights_ series. It would be like dismissing the _EarthBound Halloween RomHack_ as worthless drivel, despite it giving Toby a chance to cut his teeth before making _Undertale._ If you can use the experience from making crap you've done in the past to make something successful, I believe the aforementioned crap stops being a "failure" if there is a direct causal link. In other words, the one true failures are the ones you _don't_ learn from.
For anyone wondering, the montage tune is "I Can't Decide" by Scissor Sisters. I can't decide if it's oddly appropriate or ironically inappropriate. Definitely worth a listen, though.

Originally I gave steam a LOT of my money, because I could trust every game it had to be somewhat decent. I scanned the store page everyday, bought tons. Then they opened the floodgates, and since then I rarely buy a game.
I used to actually browse the steam store. Now I only visit the store page when I have something specific in mind. Can't even be bothered to browse during their sales.

I don't even think it was misguided. It fit the idea of how the slaves weren't treated like humans and were just crammed into ships together really well. I think people are just to uncomfortable with that stuff.
I took a game design class a few years ago. For that class I ended up making a short, simple game. It wasn't made to public release, just for a grade. It was a version of Frogger, except you drove the car and tried to run over as many frogs as possible. Even looking back on it now it was garbage, but still better than most the crap featured in this video.
One door closes and another opens. Doesn't mean we're not gonna have some try the same crap in Direct but hopefully there will be significantly less. As for Ubisoft... Wow. A hollow, white logo. Yeah, that's really gonna stand out and make people immediately excited when they boot up a game.

This's the most classic example of doing the wrong thing with good intentions. This's the same thing that would happen if we had no critics and no word of mouth as well. Everything would just be blindly accepted without question, which would lead to no quality control whatsoever. A la Steam Greenlight. So here's to hoping that Steam Direct will at least be a worthy replacement, however how slightly.
You know whats sad about Steam, I make a point of avoiding any indy game on the store, anything I havent already heard of, or anything not from major publishers/devs I avoid like the plague. Its a shame because I know theres good indy stuff out there. But with the massive cesspit of shovel-ware that has polluted the store, it sets a precedent for indy games on steam, and its littered and cluttered the storefront so much I havent even bothered poking through the 10 game queues to discover new stuff, because nearly all the items in the queue will be utter garbage asset flips. They say the greenlight is so people can find and play the games they want to play, but it has the opposite effect. Due to the asinine volume of games on the store, the good stuff gets buried behind the 95% trash. It makes it so much more difficult to navigate the store and find something you actually want. Steam shoots themselves in the foot.
Goodbye Greenlight. Cautiously optimistic for Steam Direct but who knows how that will turn out. I am sure Jim Fucking Sterling Son will traipse through this new minefield and cover it fearlessly!

Ubisoft is aware of reports that the newly released logo is causing issues when used alongside certain backgrounds and is presently working on a patch to assure it shows up when placed against these backgrounds. However, those who are eager to enjoy the new Ubisoft logo before the patch is ready may purchase a cosmetic, slightly darker blue alternative. Alternatively, customers may pre-order the founders pack to gain access to the retro logo in addition to the updated, bug-free logo when it is released. If you're unwilling to purchase either of these products, I'm afraid you'll have to wait until we patch in an outline or implement bevel technology to make the logo more discernible against said backgrounds. They didn't actually change the logo at all, it's just that the textures in the middle failed to load and they had to pretend it was intentional

You are right! When I look closer it did looked like a turd before too. So it is a turd that failed to load the usual ubisoft bullshit. I think that is an improvement.
Greenlight was an experiment. It had its successes, but in the end, it mostly failed. What's important now is for Valve to learn from it. I hope they do.

Seems like the bigger problem was the Steam Trading cards system that let people make money without selling a single game.
A lot of Greenlight problems might have been fixed if Valve had banned greenlit games from using them. Of course, then Valve wouldn't have made money on those market transactions, so it's not hard to guess why they allowed it.
Blocking trading cards from greenlit games would only have stopped the trading card mills who know that they are producing crap. The devs that think they are producing something decent, the ones who get angry at people calling their games crap, would still put their games onto Steam.
Though there are some that are a mix of both. Like Digital Homicide.

You know what's sad, the pony fanfiction game Ambient Prologue looked like it had far more effort put into it than most Greenlight Games. If the developers had created their own world and ideas they might have had a shot.

I remember seeing Ambient Prologue played by someone before and I didn't really think it was that bad. Did it belong on Greenlight? No. I would've loved to have played it off of another site where it wouldn't have been crapped on as much.
I'm not exactly sure how that even turned out but I am surprised at how much effort has been put in compared to most other green light games

I don't feel like Chipper & Sons belongs in the list with the rest of the Greenlight trash. Granted, it _was_ a terrible game that was on Greenlight, but (1) Cawthon genuinely _tried_ to create something original instead of merely cynically recycling assets with the least possible effort to glue them together, and (2) he responded to criticism not with threats and forum bans, but by using the criticism to improve and go in new directions, succeeding respectably with his later -games- _media franchise_ as a result.
...and (3) his games still don't have trading cards, because that was never his business model.
I don't think you have to give Jim a lesson on how Five Nights at Freddy's got created. It was Jim's idea, so he knows already.
So in short, unlike a lot of Greenlight stuff, it was unintentionally shit.
Well...It's no digital homicide, that's for sure but if a game isn't very good, it must be said. Like you said before, he takes criticisim well and turned his criticism into a genuinely good idea for a series of games that has made him rich and famous, so I wouldn't feel TOO bad for the guy! ;)
I mean, I WISH I could take such harsh criticism and make it successful, but it still must be said that chipper and son's is fucking scary and boring.

If you want to see terrible and/or careless video game content being made fun of, I recommend the old _Retsupurae_ videos.
I have an axe to grind against _MLP,_ and in the name of respecting opinions I may disagree with, I won't address it, but I don't think _Age of Barbarians_ or _Chipper_ needs to be on the list. _AoB_ is still being sold, and it is *very much* going for a corny glam aesthetic. I assume it would be like if the old _Masters of the Universe_ cartoons were M-Rated. It was bad. _Very_ bad. But it is bad in a way that is extremely enjoyable. And just because it is bad doesn't mean it cannot be respected for the style it is trying to put on. If there is anything to hold against it, it is that some of the censor marks don't go away when the character using them is no longer on screen (such as the cowering concubine when *_that face_* happens).
As for _Chipper,_ it is at least historically important - as a stepping stone that eventually got us the successful _Five Nights_ series. It would be like dismissing the _EarthBound Halloween RomHack_ as worthless drivel, despite it giving Toby a chance to cut his teeth before making _Undertale._ If you can use the experience from making crap you've done in the past to make something successful, I believe the aforementioned crap stops being a "failure" if there is a direct causal link.
In other words, the one true failures are the ones you _don't_ learn from.
For anyone wondering, the montage tune is "I Can't Decide" by Scissor Sisters. I can't decide if it's oddly appropriate or ironically inappropriate. Definitely worth a listen, though.

Originally I gave steam a LOT of my money, because I could trust every game it had to be somewhat decent. I scanned the store page everyday, bought tons. Then they opened the floodgates, and since then I rarely buy a game.
I used to actually browse the steam store. Now I only visit the store page when I have something specific in mind. Can't even be bothered to browse during their sales.
That too actually! Sales use to be fun, and got you into events and things. nowadays it's like "here is a sale on stock that is 80% terrible"

I don't even think it was misguided. It fit the idea of how the slaves weren't treated like humans and were just crammed into ships together really well. I think people are just to uncomfortable with that stuff.

I took a game design class a few years ago. For that class I ended up making a short, simple game. It wasn't made to public release, just for a grade. It was a version of Frogger, except you drove the car and tried to run over as many frogs as possible. Even looking back on it now it was garbage, but still better than most the crap featured in this video.
So that's where the barbarian is from...

This's the most classic example of doing the wrong thing with good intentions.
This's the same thing that would happen if we had no critics and no word of mouth as well. Everything would just be blindly accepted without question, which would lead to no quality control whatsoever.

So here's to hoping that Steam Direct will at least be a worthy replacement, however how slightly.
You know whats sad about Steam, I make a point of avoiding any indy game on the store, anything I havent already heard of, or anything not from major publishers/devs I avoid like the plague. Its a shame because I know theres good indy stuff out there. But with the massive cesspit of shovel-ware that has polluted the store, it sets a precedent for indy games on steam, and its littered and cluttered the storefront so much I havent even bothered poking through the 10 game queues to discover new stuff, because nearly all the items in the queue will be utter garbage asset flips.
They say the greenlight is so people can find and play the games they want to play, but it has the opposite effect. Due to the asinine volume of games on the store, the good stuff gets buried behind the 95% trash. It makes it so much more difficult to navigate the store and find something you actually want. Steam shoots themselves in the foot.
