They say when you play a song you either murder it or make love to it ..You have most certainly did the latter here ..loved my listen :) Thanks for playing and sharing
Very nice! We just started playing this in my band and you've helped me to figure out the solo. I don't quite have the ending down just yet. It's a little tricky. You have great timing and tone. Thanks!
You did a great job on Rough Boy, I've watched your video many times I love some ZZ Top, you should try doing another ZZ song ...Blue Jean Blues, Waitin' for the bus and Jesus Just Left Chicago :) :
Dan Clay Its called a pinch harmonic. You have to dig in a little with your picking hand so that the flesh on your thumb catches the string right after the pick does. It takes a little practice to get down but once you get it it's fairly simple to do. You really have to choke up on the pick so not much of it is showing.
Firstly & obviously just amazing... Do you realise you've done a cover of one of only (in my opinion) 3 of the most emotive guitars solos I've ever heard... This one by Billy Gibbons " Rough Boy " was to me his greatest work at solos in one song that he ever did & he never really ever played it exactly like that live.... The other is Pink Floyd's " Comfortably Numb " with David Gilmore on lead guitar... The 3rd would go to Garry Moore " Still Got The Blues For You " Garry was the king of sustain & when I saw him live there was no doubt he could hold that one note forever... Only one slight critique if I may... It felt about 85% emotion & a solo like that needs 100% full emotional content & I felt like you were phoning it in just a little bit... Maybe you were just tired or whatever, but damn that's as good as Billys original on the track & if he'd play it like that Live it would be amazing, but I understand myself that when your playing in a band live you need to change things up a bit... This is the first time I've looked at a cover of this track & all the others I looked at don't come near to your cover..... Just add a little bit more of emotional content, as that was amazing to listen to & see the younger generation play songs from the old masters... Keep up the great playing & try to do something with your talent, as that's a waste of talent anyone else would give anything to have... Slaínte
Ive been scowering around for the tabs on this, but this is the one dude I have found that actually plays the second solo. Tabs online arent much reliable either.. I was considering buying the ZZ Top Anthology book has 25 songs including Rough Boy tabs and sheet music
Very good cover man. I have just recorded a cover of this song and i listened so many times yours. You can have a look if you want. It’s not so good as your cover, but i had fun to play it. In all of case you did a great cover.. 👍🏻👍🏻👍🏻
I have recently picked up guitar again and this is one of the songs my father suggested I learn. I absolutely love the solos from Billy Gibbons. I looked for tabs and unfortunately they all arent accurate as what Billy plays. This is by far one of the closest I have heard. Did you get this off of ZZ Tops Anthology book? Do you have a source for the tabs? Heck will you make a tutorial on how to do this song? The second solo is what is hard to find. As for the first its fairly straight forward.
Man,... You Brought Life to that Cover...... Could listen to that all day....... !!

Nice cover! You even got some of the smaller nuances down and all (like the note at 0:38 like someone else mentioned).
How does one get their guitar to make that sound?
Dan Clay Its called a pinch harmonic. You have to dig in a little with your picking hand so that the flesh on your thumb catches the string right after the pick does. It takes a little practice to get down but once you get it it's fairly simple to do. You really have to choke up on the pick so not much of it is showing.

Good work, I really like. Have you thought of doing a remake after 10 years?
Why not !!
YES!!!! I am looking forward to it.
Outstanding wish I could play a guitar but my hands are quadruple the size of this guy not going to happen.
Rising Power What amp and pedals did you use?
Great similar to the original record
Add some distortion+ delay/chorus.. it'll sound awesome, especially on solos. You really nailed the song as a whole though. Good job!
How do I get this sound?
Ahh, first video to get the harmonics right
Colin Alston Haha thanks for this old video ;p

Veronica Faro merci beaucoup
Hey are the solos just based out of B minor pentatonic?
You play it better than zz top when they play it live
I run the X-100 into two DSL100's stereo .
Can you give details on your signal chain? I am pretty sure it is not just guitar and amp.
Rick Wohlschlag at that time, i used a zoom multieffect, but i never used effects, only reverb
