A sidechain high pass filter doesn't mean no compression occurs below that frequency. It just means nothing below that frequency TRIGGERS the compression. That's an important distinction. The whole frequency spectrum is still getting compressed.
Thanks for this note. I can't believe these people dare to solicit money for music production lessons on their website, when they barely understand the tools they work with.
Thank you so much!! There were few sentences you said and used EQ as visualisation which made me realize new things! Time to use compression differently and multi compressor
Glad it was helpful!
i love this guy. so good in explaining
Glad you think so!
Thank you 343 Labs TV.
Anytime! 🙌
Smackiness & Snappiness are my favourite words of the years
this was awesome
Thanks for a very informative video!
Why do you need to activate the sidechain? Most compressors have a high pass filter, won't the compressor ignore the low information if you simply turn up the filter?
I think that sidechain is really just a hp filter.
The sidechain is the same thing.
The sidechain is always active, that's how compressor's work. Any button in a comp labeled sidechain is to activate additional features, such as a sidechain EQ/filter or an external input for ducking.
This makes no sense. The sidechain signal is whats triggering the compression while affecting the entire frequency spectrum. That isn't a multiband compressor.
I just came here to say this. The sidechain doesn't mean no compression occurs below that frequency. It just means nothing below that frequency triggers the compression. I wish people didn't keep perpetuating this misinformation.
This explanation is not exactly right. This is not a multi-band compressor, and it affects the entire signal with its full frequency range, so you can't say "It only affects the frequencies above ..."
@Justin Beck sorry you are getting flamed for this, and I understand your logic in explaining that way. but it's not helpful to people in the long run and puts off more experienced people who will still benefit from all your knowledge and skill. Besides that its a very good tutorial! Thank you!
Do you compress before side chaining ?
Cheers
I would recommend adding the compressor used for ducking last in the chain, after any other compression, saturation, etc.
Dude needs to learn about the Peak button on that SSL plugin, it would've increased the compression level, adding a hard knee to it.
Just for better understanding (as a foreigner, my english is quite okay, at least I thought^^) - what are you saying at 1:58? "I'm just gonna "xxxxx" into the kick" Eee? Eat? Yeet? I couldn't get it out of the context. Thank you!
"Eat" - Remove a chunk/take a bite

3. Control the low end

Step one, pick the right kick to start with, step two, dont compress it.
