#ironmaiden #blazebayley #theangelandthegambler Episode 12 of a 16 part series exploring every studio album by Iron Maiden. With special guest Chris Corry.
Indeed, a weird record - a handful of ideas and nice, often relaxed melodies, stretched out to 53 minutes. Where's the guitar-fire from earlier days? Dave&Jannick are taking a nap here but it works like an easy-listening-album for sunny days. When this came out, it was a nice spring, so I always remember it that way. Of course, it's at the bottom for me,, together with "Fear Of The Dark" and "Final Frontier", but sometimes, I like the melancholic fluffiness and slightly futuristic ambience of it. Cheers.
Really interesting episode. I came to Maiden in real time when No Prayer was the current album. Buying ‘The Angel And The Gambler’ CD single was the reason this is the only Iron Maiden album I didn’t buy on the day of release since ‘Fear Of The Dark’... The cover art and CGI football stuff did not help my decision. Obviously I bought it years later and appreciate it’s Idiosyncrasies... I also love Blaze in Wolfsbane... If you listen to ‘Down Fall The Good Guys’ he blasts out of the speakers so it’s nice to hear this appraisal. As you say, why they didn’t tune down for him is pure madness; also why Rod didn’t step in about the production but I guess Steve was also a friend and their backs were against the wall.... At this point in time even with Bruce it would have been a tough time for Maiden.... I hope Blaze didn’t do a D’ianno and sign away his publishing but I fear getting set up for Silicon Messiah was his redundancy. I can’t unhear that D-Beat in ‘Eyes Of A Stranger’ now 🤪🤪🤪
Listened to this album over the weekend for the first time before this was uploaded. To me, the production sounds like if a fake metal band from a "Law & Order" episode actually recorded an LP. woof.
