  • "O Church Arise" is a modern hymn by Keith Getty and Stuart Townend. It has the aura of a hymn written three or four hundred years ago, yet it is popular over a wide spectrum of churches today. Its rich lyrics and fitting melody make it perfect for corporate worship. It is theologically sound focusing on the sure hope we have despite our struggles to fight the good fight of faith.

    In this modern era, indeed that Church must arise for the glory of our God alone! 🍂

    beautiful, biblical - points to Christ and exalts Him, what joy to be able to glorify and worship our Lord with such lovely music! (not the repetitious "mantra-like" of many current songs)

    This is a hymn the Church definitely needs to hear in the harsh time such as these. May the Lord work in this generation to proclaim and live out the love of Christ to the masses.

    I really love the final verse of this hymn. I've run a few half marathons, and if you have too, you might also get this picture. But the way they describe "as saints of old still line the way retelling triumphs of His grace" makes me think of race days. Lots of people come out to watch, often with humorous signs of encouragement. That's what I'm picturing with that line - the dearly departed saints encouraging us in our race with the Gospel. And then, when you do finally get to the finish line, Christ is there, and He takes the medal from around His neck and puts it on yours.

    O Church, arise, and put your armour on;
    Hear the call of Christ our Captain.
    For now the weak can say that they are strong
    In the strength that God has given.
    With shield of faith and belt of truth,
    We’ll stand against the devil’s lies;
    An army bold, whose battle-cry is Love,
    Reaching out to those in darkness.
    Our call to war, to love the captive soul
    But to rage against the captor;
    And with the sword that makes the wounded whole,
    We will fight with faith and valour.
    When faced with trials on every side
    We know the outcome is secure,
    And Christ will have the prize for which He died,
    An inheritance of nations.
    Come see the cross, where love and mercy meet,
    As the Son of God is stricken;
    Then see His foes lie crushed beneath His feet,
    For the Conqueror has risen!
    And as the stone is rolled away,
    And Christ emerges from the grave,
    This victory march continues till the day
    Every eye and heart shall see Him.
    So Spirit, come put strength in every stride,
    Give grace for every hurdle,
    That we may run with faith to win the prize
    Of a servant good and faithful.
    As saints of old still line the way,
    Retelling triumphs of His grace,
    We hear their calls and hunger for the day
    When with Christ we stand in glory.

    Wow why is everyone arguing so much about "correct" songs to worship to? I thought the "correct" way to worship is always just worshipping in the Spirit of God, looking to Him and celebrating His glory. Just because this song is written well doesn't mean all others are bad or have bad intent.

    There is something powerful - even superior - whenever the Word is the content of the worship lyric; you may or may not have regard for how I feel, my affect, even "my faith"; but the Word is uniquely beautiful and powerful.

    Wonderful song.
    “O church, arise, and put your armor on;
    Hear the call of Christ our captain.
    For now the weak can say that they are strong
    In the strength that God has given.
    With shield of faith and belt of truth,

    Our call to war, to love the captive soul,

    We will fight with faith and valor.
    When faced with trials on every side,
    We know the outcome is secure.
    And Christ will have the prize for which He died:
    An inheritance of nations.
    Chorus:
    Arise, shine for your light has come
    Arise, shine for the Risen Son
    Lift your eyes, we are His radiant bride
    Arise, o church arise!
    Come, see the cross, where love and mercy meet,
    As the Son of God is stricken;
    Then see His foes lie crushed beneath His feet,
    For the Conqueror has risen!
    And as the stone is rolled away,
    And Christ emerges from the grave,
    This victory march continues till the day
    Ev’ry eye and heart shall see Him.
    So Spirit, come, put strength in every stride;
    Give grace for every hurdle.
    That we may run with faith to win the prize
    Of a servant good and faithful.
    As saints of old, still line the way,
    Retelling triumphs of His grace,
    We hear their calls, and hunger for the day
    When with Christ we stand in Glory.
    CHORUS”

    A psalm in Hebrew is "tehillim" meaning "song of praise". The Bible also talks about singing a new song. Examples include: Psalm 33:3; Psalm 40:3; Psalm 96:1. There are 9 times "new song" occurs in the NIV. So we can take Psalm 47:7 to say "For God is the King of all the earth; sing songs of praise with intelligence." Songs of praise is more... general.
    I personally think saying that we should sing the Book of Psalms is one's preference because there's no evidence that this is a command.

    Levántate, Iglesia del Señor
    cálzate tu armadura!
    Pues en Jesús, nuestro Gran Capitán
    está nuestra fortaleza
    Con el escudo de la fe
    al diablo no hemos de temer
    Ejército, armado de Amor
    ve y alcanza a los perdidos
    Es tu misión, al mundo alcanzar
    y enfrentar al enemigo
    Con fe y valor batalla hemos de dar
    la Palabra es nuestra espada
    Aunque haya pruebas por doquier
    no hay imposibles para Él
    Y así tendrá, lo que buscó al morir
    una herencia de naciones
    Y allí en la cruz de amor y compasión
    vemos a Cristo asolado
    Mas aplastados yacen a los pies
    del Señor sus enemigos
    Conquistador, se levantó
    es Cristo que resucitó
    Se cantará su triunfo hasta que
    todo ojo pueda verlo
    Por gracia, oh Dios, infúndenos valor
    Danos fuerza a cada paso
    Danos la fe para el premio obtener
    de un siervo fiel y bueno
    Las voces de quienes ayer
    confiaron en tu provisión
    aliento son en nuestro caminar
    hasta estar con El por siempre

    Not many hymns in, to pick just one example, the Dutch protestant hymnal, are tied to "one brief historical period." My favorite hymn tunes have been around for a couple hundred years. We will never know how long the Keith Getty et al. songs (which I do not consider to be hymns) will survive.

  • @tranceseraph
    @tranceseraph  11 лет назад +6

    The tunes question is kind of up in the air. There's nothing in the Bible prescribing a particular melody or chord structure.
    As to Lucifer being God's orchestra master - that's not entirely clear. This is based off Ezekiel 28 which is a prophecy against the King of Tyre. Equating these prophecies with Lucifer ("morning star" - Isaiah 14, a prophecy against the King of Babylon) is circumstantial and can be argued. To be clear, I am saying Satan exists, but his origin is unclear.

      Satan is certainly an angel, indeed a fallen angel who was created by God the Most High. This is clear by Scripture. Because for one, satan is described as a Cherub, a guardian Cherub in Ezekial 28. And in Job 1:6-7, it states that Satan appeared with the other “sons of man” which are the angels, specifically the fallen angels in context. Satan can be described as an angelic creature surely.

    The tunes matter a lot to me. I hate some of the music in the Church. God has gifted us to make wonderful melodies for His glory. There are melodies that need to depart from the Church to be honest. The Christians should have the most moving music in the earth, and we do, and the Gettys do.

  • @lionsbru
    @lionsbru 11 лет назад +1

    Not sure how you are defining "pop". Keith Getty generally composes tunes in a folk-tune style very like those used for many hymns over the past several centuries. His purpose is to write things that will not be tied to one brief historical period, in short that are NOT "pop" style. You are perfectly welcome to prefer some other style, but please do get your definitions straight.

      @@farmdog3713 Christ Jesus is also referred to as "captain" in the scriptures; It is seen in verse 10 of Hebrews chapter 2.
      Hebrews 2:9-10
      New King James Version
      9 But we see Jesus, who was made a little lower than the angels, for the suffering of death crowned with glory and honor, that He, by the grace of God, might taste death for everyone.
      10 For it was fitting for Him, for whom are all things and by whom are all things, in bringing many sons to glory, to make the captain of their salvation perfect through sufferings.
