- Double or Nothing was produced by Jonathan Weston in 1992 on the Island of Maui (Associate Producers, Herb Squires, Robert Ramacher). The movie starred Jason Prior and his sidekick, Francisco Goya, with many cameos by the stars of our sport. The storyline follows the first arrival of windsurfers to Maui with comical trials and tribulations to follow, as well as the pursuit of windsurfing's holy grail, the double loop.
The video, with all water footage shot on film, was marked by a helicopter crash into the waters of Sprecklesville in which Weston barely survived, a 200k dollar camera that did not. Mickey Eskimo just missed being landed on by the chopper.
Though our actors rarely and barely followed script, at the time of writing it, nobody had ever completed a double loop. Everything was on the line. It was Double or Nothing.

Paul, thanks for sharing this jewel of windsurfing film history. Those were the golden years.
Thanks mate!
Bernd Rod ragged on me for calling my book, Glory Days. I get that every day is a glory day for anyone walking on water with a boom in hands, or wing, kite, whatever, but this was the Heyday, hands down (actually first title of book before Clay Feeter dubbed it so.... don't blame me if there is any certain sort of sexual connotation attached, or do).
What a fantastic movie!! What really strikes me with these old school movies are how insanely good the guys were at ripping with the gear they had! Like how many times more difficult must it be than with modern stuff?
Definitely!
I find the new stuff difficult. Go figure. A lot easier though to windsurf without a bowling ball on the head for a camera.

Nice one Paul 🤙💥

57:49 Jenna ! I see her in 1988 at the "boat show" in Paris. She was on the "Tiga" stand at the time. I was with friends who were passionate about windsurfing like me. We chatted with her a little. Very kind and so beautiful. I left with an autograph on a card that she gave me, that I still have. Greetings from France Paul, and thanks for the share of this movie here.
Super cool, 1988…. What a great year!
The book is absolutely awesome!

"Hey, at least I've got no grey poop in my shoes, man!" -Cisco character
Grey Poop On lol... poor Francisco, he was still getting the hang of English. Fortunately, he did his best acting on the water.
Crazy. Im feeling Like a Teenager again 😂🤙🏼
Sick. was Jason riding his new ‘23 wing boards already in ‘94? You are so ahead of your time:-)😅
I know most of the gear from own experience, sh..t , time is flying
Thanks for sharing!!
Time goes pretty fast!
I’ve watched the vhs tape so much of this movie. Make it to hookipa….
Never saw this one back then - got a shock seeing an old Amiga in use, and hearing plenty of Headless Chickens tunes too (pretty obscure outside NZ).
I did wear out an Impact Zone tape back in the 80s/90s. I think Jonathan also worked on those Neil Pryde videos too (eg Instant Replay, Rigmarole etc).
Yeah I’m not sure on the Neil Pryde ones. Robert Masters was the name on the covers.
Yup Robert Masters was the main name on Instant Replay, I had a feeling he had help as they were pretty big productions. I have vague and/or faulty memories of Jonathan online ages ago (rec.windsurfing?) when he had a company site to download clips from old 80s and 90s videos. The NP and Gaastra ones were up there, I think that's where I got that idea.
you're right sty ro man. I did work on a few Neil Pryde and Gaastra videos, shooting film in the water and a few mounts as well. The forward with Matt Pritchard was the first mount ed loop captured, used in a Planet Reebok commercial. @windsurfer@@styrotech But the Headless Chickens? I thought they were named Tribe or something like that. Donde esta la pollo, Goya screamed out on the rock in Iao River. That was a line from their song and Francisco said it had a naughty meaning. Peter Boyd *RIP had a wife who was the band's manager.
I see the song tags. I guess they renamed themselves. The old Amiga, that was the first crack at titling and such... hi tech. Probably makes for a good fish bowl for a couple of old souls swimming.
@@JonathanWeston interesting!
to me the sails look way older than 1994...
Some of them look like they were from 1990/91.
It was filmed over 3 years and delayed release. Something about recovering from a heli crash goes here.
to me boards and sails look 1991. Boards are right before no nose shapes came out
