I’m glad you made these videos which helps make people aware of Xequence. I just started using it and so far find it virtually perfect for me. It took 10-15 minutes initially to find where some settings and routings were: I use it standalone on the iPad and send the MIDI to huge VSTs on a Mac. You can’t beat the simple, tactile, precise interaction with the piano roll. And it’s MIDI timing accuracy of 0.1 ms rivals anything on any platform.
This is a tool for serious composition with accuracy and precision to handle the most complex syncopated human generated rhythms.
how you send the MIDI to VSTS on a mac? can you please guide me, and also do you think its possible with windows
I appreciate the style in which you filmed this top down. Nothing fancy; straight to the point for the user to make educated choices on this app.
thanks. I try to keep the chatter to a minimal and just get to the goods. There is enough fluff on the internet.

Thank you for pointing out that I can use Ableton link without Ableton even being on. Game changer!
Brilliant. I've been using iOS music production apps exclusively in my home studio since 2015. At first a few of my musician friends would pull face and say "Recording on an iPad?" but now (and for 2-3 years really) any one I talk to re: iOS music production is pretty blown away about just how capable the platform is.
Those that still want MacOS on iPad so Logic can be used kind of miss the point. Like the Tascam PortaStudio's I started recording on, permanent home studios & mobile setups using the iOS platform bring immediacy back to recording. The touch screen has echoes of the hands on feel of knobs & faders and at least for me the endless "what it's" aren't as bad on iOS. Because of the limits on CPU you're more likely to commit to a decision and bounce in place/freeze a track than endlessly navel gaze over the slightest little thing.
Of course the flexibility of AUM & Xequence make iOS a live tool just as effective as a studio one. Great stuff Dabbler, I have learned tons from your videos & appreciate the effort you put into them. Be cool...
What gets me is how iOS software is half the price of desktop's. And it's not like these new M1 iPads are much slower than a 3 year old workstation.
Thank you. I have been looking for this app. Your video was informative with Zero BS! I really appreciate that. I’m off to the shop!
I like the idea of being able to use MIDI apps inside of AUM and being able to send it out to your Xequence MIDI instrument track. Using a modular work flow can help you to be able to add more complexity to how you process your sounds without getting CPU overload glitches. Your use of MT DAW is spot on too.
I just got MT Daw because I wanted something easy to just record some audio. Works really well. I need to do some tutorials on it soon.
Great video! Are you able to nudge very slightly (like in ableton) with the arrow keys ?
I appreciate the your tutorials on Xequence. I’m still having difficulty getting generative midi into Xequence. In AUM I’m not seeing virtual source as an option in the midi matrix. Any advice.
Keep the great work. Cheers
Great tutorial...I'm a few days into this app. Your channel has been super helpful, thanks
Wow this is awesome been looking for a clean sequencer
Didn’t know that MT DAW could do that split screen side by side and drag and drop great. Great tutorial on how to use the new update by the way thanks for this learned a lot.
Having finally arrived at the point where I wanted to create a modular workflow within iOS using AUM as my mixer it was great to see your name amongst the video results when searching. I had previously thought that Digikeys was going to be my answer but X 2 looks like a way more powerful.
My intention is to make a BM3 replacement within AUM and this looks like I'm there already!
I suspect I have a journey ahead working out which sampler to use, but that's a different story...
Did you get a dedicated sampler? For now i'm on AUM's file player and the AUv3 with basic sample player built in (groove rider GR 16 and Drumcomputer)
@@hettovennik2887 I ended up using LK with EG Pulse to make an Ableton style workflow but I've been so obssssed with Koala lately that I've not used anything but that for months. The imminently release of Atom 2 could bring my attention back to the modular setup, though. I've been eagerly awaiting that one for some considerable amount of time!
@@PeteSasqwax Cheers. Ah totally forgot Koala. So many apps & possibilities.. Just purchased Audiokit L7 on discount as i'm delving into live looping during dj sets. see if that works

Your vids rock. Very happy to have found this channel tonight. Learned more tonight than I have in quite some time!

thanks man. Glad the my videos could help.
Awesome... Great job explaining, demoing, and creating...
Awesome video ! Thanks so much for your sharing of knowledge!
Would you consider making a video of setting up AUM with AudioLayer hosting drum samples and how one could setup a drum kit in AUM with the AL instances. That would rock! Thanks!
Thanks Mitch, just bought it out of curiosity and would have been lost without this video. So except for perhaps the sometimes sketchy clock I don’t see how I can’t do the same thing in Cubasis .. but I have a ways to go here still.
Mitch, to use with auv3 like Noise, Groovebox and Gestruments, for example, what do you recomend? AUM, Audiobus, apeMatrix or directly to a DAW such as Garageband? I'm very nooby at this 😞 Thank you very much for your videos and regards from Brazil! Stay safe 🙏
AWESOME JOB. Seriously. So I know that Xequence itself can record MIDI parameters (CC), if I hook up and route a Midi controller in AUM to control FX busses, synth cutoffs, etc does Xequence record those CCs out of AUM? Is the routing any different?
I'd like to know that too!
yes, I am pretty sure it can. I will explore and videoize it.
Yep, I tried with a pulse 2 synth and it records all the parameters. Just great!
Beautiful piano improv there brotha!
Thanks for listening
Was this made before you could make a bus channel in AUM? Just making sure I’m not missing something after seeing you bounce ur audio stems into that app at the end
not sure but also pre- multi output AUM (doens't matter for the vid). I wonder now too though, March 2021, if this still is the 'easiest' way for 'limitless' AUv3 music creation. Did no iOS sequencer (cubasis, auria etc) catch up on the possibilities the duo AUM + Xequnece 2 make? Just wondering.. I'm quite new to AUM and love it. But im used to Logic Pro X on iMac and kinda miss that. I think i like the 'modular' way of this and buy Xequence but at the same time i wonder if its not just over-complicating the creative flow / make music fast & intinutive
Thanks for this very helpful video.
Thanks for yet another informative and clear video. Excellent job.
What an amazing video, thanks for that! Sounded great, too❤️
Interesting. I like the work flow. I’m going to give Xequence 2 a try. Thanks.
Great video going to try this with bm3 or nano
Great explainer video! I recieved a tip about Xequence being able to read and write parameter automatization in a track fashion for the parameters of other instruments. I tought it would be a great topic for a video, if it's actually true.
I think many people don't really understand MIDI. They mess around and try this and that until it works. I think it's a huge benefit to really understand what midi is all about. For example that virtual source setting. Ok we can just choose it because it will make more things work. So the question is why do we have to set it and it is not just set all the time. I know why and it's important to understand it. One thing that causes problems is when we send midi all over the place and end up with noises and even crashes. The concept of virtual ports is very important to understand because if you do, you will be much better at getting things to work, especially when a setup gets a bit complex. I haven't seen many good tutorials on how to use midi properly. The key word is properly.
Perry Pelican this is my main issue with learning iOS production. If I google something I’m lucky to find a RUclips-video of some dude filming his iPad with his phone going “now I have no clue what I did but it works so just copy what my midi settings are I guess”
@@tobiass2992 I try to make my videos as clear as I can. if you have any questions I am glad to help.
I plan on doing a dive into midi in and out of Xequence and other uses.
your channel is like a beacon of light in the darkness that is trying to figure out iOS music production
thanks for that. IT means a lot.
Thank you so much it helped me a lot :O
91 truly is the most even of all the numbers.
Well maybe not even, but it's symmetric as hell (3^2 x 3^2). Then again, anything with a 9 in it is just plain cool-kind of like the letter Q. Which is why I ended up marrying a girl named Quinine. She's a tall drink of water.
@@davids.688 I discarded a cynic answer to that comment regarding your much better reply. I love this marriage of math and romantics. Great entertainment for me. Wish you all the best. :)
Thanks very much for posting this video! Very helpful! I ask you: can I do the same things/routing with Audiobus3?
Thaks for video!!! Is there a way to record a track in AUM in the same way, with the only difference being that the instruments of one DAW also will be recorded (as, for example, in nanostudio 2) instead of AU only, so I will have audio recording for each DAW instrument? If not, then maybe with using other programs like audiobus!!!!
Стас Чудовищь im not sure I understand fully what you mean but if I do, yes you should be able to record every single midi track’s audio output on your daw. Just make sure your midi is going to the right apps so that they only play the intended sounds, then on your daw just multitrack record every instrument on a separate track (receiving the midi from Xequence) and you should be fine.
I record both all of my midi and audios so that I have a “score” both to show to people and to modulate my sounds further through MIDI.
👌🏼👍🏼
Appreciate your videos. I just bought Xequence 2 after watching this video thinking I could get a workflow going without needing Audiobus. Well I got everything going accept for Xequence 2 to sync with Aum’s transport control. I’ve watched the bit of your video where you set up collider get everything set up and hit record and it seems to trigger AUM to play for you but I can’t get aum’s playhead to sync with Xequence 2 for the life of me. I can only record midi from aum/rozeta generative aux midi apps if I go into aum after I hit play in Xequence 2 and hit play manually.
Sorry you are having issues. Do you have Ableton Link enabled? and Start/Stop options enabled as well? I have not experienced any sync issues with Xequence and AUM.
@@TheAudioDabbler Turns out all I needed to do was enable the Start/Stop option in AUM also and that did the trick! Thanks man!
@@TheHazardousDuke Glad to hear that worked for you.
Yeah X2 has been a blast triggering all my old analog HW synths; stylus really helps speed up composing🏍
yeah makes me want an Apple Pencil for more precision
Nice. But I wonder what are the advantages of Xequncer 2 compared to the Atom sequencer. Atom is fully compatible with AUv3. I admit, I'm not familiar with Xequencer 2, but after what I see in your otherwise nice demonstration, I would like to know any advantages to use also the Xequencer 2. Enlighten me ... :)
So the ATOM sequencer is not really a full linear sequencer. Its great for small loops or even large ones but once it gets so big I could see it hard to manage when it comes to song structure. So the advantage of Xequencer is the bigger picture and being able to see the entire song structure. easily copy and paste parts. Maybe compare a speed boat vs a cruise ship. A speed boat is fast and fun but the cruise ship is bigger and you can fit a hundred speed boats in a cruise ship.
I don’t have Atom, but based on what it does, I don’t think I can have an efficient workflow with it for the kind of music I make which is mostly linear. Most of my tracks are midi this means a lot of extra setup that you can’t easily reuse. In Xequence you see all the tracks side by side. You can move pieces around, line them up to each other, pretty much do everything you would in any other DAW. This version 2 supports start/stop with Ableton Link, and is probably the main reason people would upgrade to it from previous ver. Now it just seamlessly integrates with whatever you hook it up to. One screen is your AUM/ApeMatrix/etc and another screen is Xequence with all the tracks. The more you learn about these tools, the more you realize what’s missing and what is possible. I don’t like piano roll in Cubasis so I almost never used it. But with Xequence I use it all the time from changing notes to actually writing verses. Say I have a bass line that feels a bit simplistic, so I can easily experiment with it and spice it up.
Ultimately I would love it if Cubasis partnered with Xequence and integrated all the features into itself. Including project management. But for now, as far as workflows go my least favorite way to compose is on a comp (Cubase), then Cubasis and most favored - Xequence. Once Cubasis gets Link, it’ll be easier to use the two together. You can drag the transport to a certain position in Cubasis then do the same in Xequence, then you can play/record audio in sync with midi, without the need to first “write out” midi to Cubasis until the very end. And even if you want to rework something afterwards it would be easy. For now, I first completely compose in Xequence then write it out to Cubasis and then lay down audio tracks.
BM3 supports Link, but midi setup is pretty inefficient there, and everything about switching between instruments and fx is just plain horrible. After seeing how simple it can be with Cubasis, going back just feels awkward. They should really get that UI straight.
TheAudioDabbler It make sense. My tracks are more midi loop based with realntime manipulation. I have to try the generative features in xequencer 2. 👍🏼
Great discussions! It shows how much more knowledgeable iOS music makers have become over the past few years. The one thing still missing is a deeper understanding of MIDI. The goal should be to learn midi beyond trial and error to rely know what's going on. It will allow you to create the best setups, not only ones that work or not. For example what is a virtual MIDI port and why use one instead of another way?
It’s not only the fact that Atom is mostly a “small midi looper” which although workable around with, isn’t really ideal for full pieces just like AudioDabbler mentions.
Another thing that I find terribly bad about ATOM (great app, huge issues though), is that playing and recording at the same time (at least through my AKAI MPK Mini MK2) leads to many audio glitches:
While recording, sounds get cut and it’s very distracting and can lead to you messing up your riff/idea.
Ideally with Atom Piano roll, you’re better off sequencing your midi before you actually intend to use it - ironically this makes a “looper” a bit bad, since you can’t really use it live.
Last point to bring up about ATOM, is that MIDI sends are only through MIDI CH 1. This is a huge miss and honestly leads to having to load additional AUv3s simply to remap the MIDI flow, not ideal at all as it consumes performance for unnecessary reasons.
The good thing is, I’ve made a huge thread on the Atom AppStore page explaining all of my issues and frustration with their otherwise incredible AUv3 (particularly since no one else is doing Piano Rolls as AUv3 AFAIK), and they were very quick to let me know that not only are my remakes being taken into consideration but also that an update will follow soon.
Atom is great for sketching ideas, but ultimately my MIDI always ends being recorded into Xequence.
I often times use ApeMatrix and Atom Piano Roll to sketch ideas and once I like what’s coming out of it I send it directly from ApeMatrix’s Atom instance as MIDI into a Xequence track, I record it in Xequence and then reconfigure ApeMatrix so it receives midi from Xequence as opposed to Atom’s piano roll. This way I can have a cleaner midi file and also change the midi channel of each track, something that ATOM won’t let you do at the moment.
Needless to say, If Xequence 2 was AUv3 this wouldn’t be necessary and you could probably just rely on Xequence itself, but I doubt that will ever happen so ATOM piano roll definitely has a place amongst your apps:
you just gotta know when it’s not gonna be good enough to pull the trick - and use Xequence as External MIDI then.
Another great video. Would love more videos using with AUM especially multitrack recording and PolyHymnia. How would you go about recording previous saved jams in AUM? Thanks for all your great videos.
recording a jam from AUM if its all midi controlled would be pretty easy. Good topic for a video.
Excellent, subbed for future reference 👍
Audio dabbler can u give me the link to the video henny da bizness found on your channel where u discribe how to integrete aum and audiobuss when u create presets you can recall. So you can drop samples from apps into samplr and into other programs in synths. And have premade presets for them? If I’m explaining it right.

TheAudioDabbler I figured it out. Thx
Can you show us how to place kaola sampler in that audio chain?
Will this work with bm3
I've done all my stuff with Gadget so far, but I'm thinking about going either to Cubasis or Xequence/AUM. On one hand, I like the "all-in-one" view of a DAW like Cubasis, on the other hand its piano roll editing is a bit awkward compared to Xequence (or even Gadget, for that matter). So, my main questions are: Can I make really "big" songs with a long duration and lots of instruments (I have a lot of AU synths, instruments, FX and stuff) in Xequence/AUM? Can I bounce it as individual tracks into Cubasis for further additions, changes and final mixing (the way you did it there with Multitrack DAW?) And, does Xequence play IAA apps too?
Anyway, great overview, I learned a lot! Thank you!
Yes, you can have giant midi tracks with Xequence and depending on your device, you can load up a lot of AUs and stuff inside of AUM without a hitch. Especially if you turn your buffer to 1024. And yes, you can bounce all down and import into cubasis for further editing and polishing.
Xequence will play IAA apps as well. I have not tested many but if you have any particular apps you would like tested then let me know and I can see what I can do.
Hey Mitch, thanks a lot for the superfast and comprehensive answer! I think I'll give Xequence a try, because I really like the workflow you are demonstrating here. Speaking of the the IAA only synth apps, coming from Gadget I would really miss the Korg synths, especially iMono/Poly, my absolute go-to machine so far. And some other older synths, too, like Grain Science (massively underrated in my humble opinion), Animoog and FM4....
Cubasis doesn’t have Link (yet), so you can’t sync it with Xequence, but I still use the two apps together. Compose in X, and then write it out to Cubasis to add audio. All instruments are already hosted in Cubasis so no additional setup. Only thing is after you add audio it’s hard to go back to Xeq because of no Link... But Xeq lets me compose the bulk of the tune so easily it still keeps the workflow pleasant. Which for me is the priority and pretty much the reason I stopped using BeatMaker 3 and Auria
Very interesting!
Question: the app says to only use virtual source as a last resort. Did this change since you did the vid? It’s an alert/hint in the app when you click virtual link
No it didn't change. The developer suggests to not use the apps virtual source since it could cause some drifting or unwanted sync issues.
TheAudioDabbler cool, thanks man. I’ve been using it too, thanks for the vids and response!
Hi. If there were an audio track in AUM ( I know xequence is triggering apps via midi ) Is the button in xequence linked to the play button in AUM. Thanks man.
it can be linked if you are using ableton link. Also, you can map a cc or send a pc command to trigger the audio track inside of AUM. I have a video coming soon to show this.
@@TheAudioDabbler Thanks. Can you show how you might record the exact sequence when using another sequencer like you did with Rozeta. Im using stepbud. Iv only just got xequence but can only record random midi from stepbud. Seems like you pressed record in xequence to record/trigger the start of rozeta rather than just a random bit anywhere in the rozeta sequence. Thanks. Basically just want to use xequence to have more channels visible rather than AUM interface and to not have to solo in AUM. When arrangement is sorted, tweak parameters and record audio.
No worries mate. I sorted it. Start stop button in the Abelton link section. With Multitrack Daw. Can you use AU eq and Au reverb on the recorded audio. Is that when you might adjust eq. Even after recording. Would you recommend me buy Multitrack DAW instead of ns2 or beatmaker 3. Im buying some sort of sampler as well or to arrpegiate samples and on keys ( glitch voice recordings or radio recordings ) so it might be best they be added in AUM, rather than have bm3 add samples after AUM. I have garageband though.
Hi, just started with Xequence so thanks for the great tutorial, one question so far, why did you choose channel 14 for ruismaker in AUM for the drum track in Xequencer and not channel 3.
Any reason why your using that multitrack DAW vs Cubasis, BM3?
MT Daw handles Audio very well. I like Cubasis but I still have issues with Audio Files sometimes, plus its a little bloated in my opinion when you just want to mix audio tracks.
I have a question. Does this support midi file importing, editing, and exporting ? If so I’m trying to fix a few piano notes that were played wrong . I also need to change a few notes that are played with the wrong hand . So one part showed all notes played with right hand which is impossible. Can this designate what notes are played by what hand. Thanks much and thanks for your time

Is Xequence 2 able to record MIDI automations to the piano roll?
yes, it can record many automations. I will get to a video on that soon.
Yup, Xequence 2 records everything that’s sent to it and you can edit each thing individually (velocity, Aftertouch, some other CC#). Once recorded you can go to the one you want and edit it. The way it’s done was the reason I got Xequence. Editing notes/automation is it’s strongest point. Make sure to buy Xequence 2 though, not the first one which is still available at the shop for less.
It is Sunvox, not those fancy toys...
oh, I think I remember point c) I left out:
project-related memory of xeq2 = problematic...
and somewhat annoying.
I use and tested Audiobus and apematrix‘ savethewholecrap-variations and ended up with disappointing results.
There is no unreflected statesaving for xeq2, rather a switching to the sequencer informs you, that a unsaved change is pending.
This may possiblely true, more often it blocks what is most wanted:
switch to that fucking requested file and leave me alone with your quirks!
-- I have not found a workaround. Having to look what diva Xequence is looking for went to a be a common interruption. May be a killling criteria for Do-it-NOW-prefering musicians who want push-button-reliability on stage. Every single edit during performance may cause hickups. OK for me, but intentions may vary.
This is pretty cool but I cannot see the advantage of this workflow over simply using a fully featured D.A.W. like Cubasis.
I think that the developer should just make this a fully functional D.A.W. that hosts AUv3 and Audio.
If you don't mind bouncing around from app to app I guess this is for you.
No other DAW has the advanced audio routing option as AUM and I don't think any other DAW has as fluid of a piano roll as Xequence. IF you think of the iPad as the DAW and the different apps as just windows or sections of a DAW then it works. I mean you bounce through screens at the bottom with Cubasis and you have to deal with not being able to resize the AUv3 windows. plus you only have 1 bus with 3 effects. Using AUM and Xequence breaks a lot of limits that other DAWs have.
Well, to be honest I also don’t see the point in AUM - for the things I do. Not saying it’s bad or anything, it’s pretty efficient and if you want to jam without recording, or test out some things it’s quick to setup. But if you’re recording audio through it, there’s no multi-tracking - so definitely not for me. I try to always record even when jamming. I can always discard what I recorded, but if there are some cool ideas I can salvage them.
So I think there are two camps, DAW and DAW-less, and it just depends on person’s preferred workflow. My goto DAW is Cubasis. It just does everything I need a lot better than the others I’ve tried. Except, you can’t rearrange fx there, and experimenting with the fx chain is not as advanced nor simple as in ApeMatrix. And I don’t like the way it handles editing of recorded midi (pianoroll). It’s possible to do everything, but not in the way I would ever want to do it. So that’s where Xequence 2 comes in. It makes Writing and editing music a breeze. There’s overhead of setting up midi, but you can just do it once and save it as template. So I got this preset where I’ve set up 8 midi channels pointing to ApeMatrix. And another “init” preset for Cubasis. I don’t do presets on Ape or Cubasis side, because I never know what I’ll be doing. So on the side of Xequence you can even set up 16 “instruments” they don’t take up more resources because it’s just connections to particular channels. You could put anything you want on those channels in Ape/Cubasis.
Gotta love 303 likes. ^ not pressing the button now ;-) EDIT: had to press it didn't i ;-)
91 IS AN ODD NUMBER - good try tho you had a 50/50 shot.

Hi, just started with Xequence so thanks for the great tutorial, one question so far, why did you choose channel 14 for ruismaker in AUM for the drum track in Xequencer and not channel 3.
