    Hi! I'm an aum user, don't have audiobus 'cause I didn't fell I needed IAA till now.
    I'd like to route DRUM COMPUTER's audio (using just the standalone vs of this app) inside aum.
    Do you think it will be possible with audiobus?
    PS (surely I'm not the first to ask a maybe too dumb question)
    even with audiobus it's impossible to stream and route audio from youtube directly to apps inside aum, isn't it?

    • @TheAudioDabbler
      @TheAudioDabbler  9 месяцев назад +1

      I think the way they designed Drum Computer, the standalone is the free version and does not route audio. Not sure Audiobus would help. I dont think Drum Computer has IAA. As far as streaming RUclips there is an app called Tube Audio Unit, Have not tried it myself but seems to work and allows for web based audio and video to be played via auv3.

    Rediscovering Audiobus 3, since it was silently sitting on my system doing its IAA job in the background ‘for’ AUM. But it seems that Audiobus makes using my iPad Pro as a full fledged FX processor for external gear so much easier. Got triggered by a discussion on AUM’s Discord when bumping into some MIDI setup issues. Audiobus made this particular use cases so much easier for me. So yes, both apps absolutely have their own advantages 👍🏻 Hopefully development continues 🙏🏻

    Midi midi midi can we take advantage with AUM or is it just a live Audio mixer that cannot be quantized?

    • @TheAudioDabbler

      It can sync midi apps, drum machines, etc that have Ableton link or are AUv3. It is primarily an audio mixer but it can host AUv3 apps and effects. It is really the center of anything I do on the iPad.

    Clear as mud. This was somewhat useful, but the reason there is so much confusion is because the videos describing these 2 apps is confusing. I have watched dozens and while they all touch on certain points, they are generally very scattered and poorly presented.

    Hi Mitch - many thanks for this vid...not 100% sure if this helps solve my particular set up - so I'll ask for your indulgence - and maybe you can help shed some light...?
    - I'm a live looper using instruments with a boss rc300 - but wish to go with iPad and Loopy.
    My goal is 5 in's to Auria Pro -- (Mics, guitar, keys,) routed through audiobus into Loopy HD - then 6 loopy loops routed back into Auria - and out the 4 outs on my Steinberg - so that those 4 outs can go into an outboard mixer (for FOH sound guy) - who can then Mix and EQ the separate loops in real time.
    - I wondered if I'm better served with different apps? - or if it's just the bussing and routing in Auria that I need to solve?
    - would an iConnect unit be better then the Steinberg as an IO? ... would love any insights .... many thanks in advance!

    I sort of see Audiobus and aum as brothers that stick together. If you get one then it makes no sense to not get the other. In other words I agree with you. Every musician using IOS has to get both or they are missing out. And there is Audiobus remote, which is so handy. Any new music app better have at least one of IAA OR AU support and should support Audiobus if they want to be successful. I could be wrong. For all I know the biggest customer base could be kids who don't care about any of that stuff. I would really like to see a list of all apps and how many are out there and the breakdown of how many customers by age group. Even better to see how many own Audiobus and aum for each other music app. I know that will never be available.

    Thanks. Probably to long ago to get a respond but I will give it a shot. I am looking at Audiobus. I want to route different midi channels from my Digitakt to different synth apps. Audiobus is the way right? I saw a video where Audiobus recognizes the different midi channels of the Digitakt. Audiobus let’s then use them at the same time right?

    • @TheAudioDabbler
      @TheAudioDabbler  2 года назад

      I am not familiar with the Digitakt. But if it can send midi out multiple channels at the same time then Audiobus will let you use multiple channels at the same time. I do it with my novation SL MK3 since it will send out 8 different midi channels with its sequencer.

      I guess you’ve already found out that Audiobus is a great app for this…? Even though the DT only support one stereo input / output on iOS, in comparison to multiple separate channels with Elektron’s Overbridge on macOS. This audio limitation on iOS / ipadOS also goes for AUM, but for MIDI I think Audiobus works much more straightforward than AUM.

    Loopy a good looper? You press record then it takes time to go to the app you are going to use, you play and then you go back to stop it. So you have some silence in the beginning and at the end of the loop, doesnt sound like good looping to me.....

    Thanks very much for a logical overview of why one might need both AUM & AudioBus and what their strengths and weaknesses are. I'm new to the Apple iOS world and very old-school and so I like to know what does what and so from there can make my own decisions as to how to use them. This is largely missing from modern approaches to computing - "Just use this with this and they work!" and often no explanation as to why. Generally very frustrating and thus refreshing.

Also...while I am commenting...I have been doing research into using iOS midi and converting it to CV for analog synths. I have found a few devices but they all have standard midi 5 pin round connectors instead of USB midi or USB mini midi or even more mind blowing USB TRS 3.5mm. Thanks!

    • @TheAudioDabbler
      @TheAudioDabbler  3 года назад +1

      If you plug the xr18 into the iPad via camera connection kit, it should recognize all the inputs and whatever routing you have done via the software internal to the XR18. As far as Audiobus seeing the behringer app I doubt it but it would not be required.

    Do any of these apps allow for tempo sync (for delays in the apps etc) from a (Mac) host yet... maybe Logic Pro X? Up until now I'm just recording these great little synth apps (etc) by using a 1/8 cable into my Apollo and editing the audio on Logic's timeline. Just reading about IDAM now and hoping this ability is right around the corner because then I can finally use all these apps to the fullest. I know Ableton already has "link". Not sure how they accomplish that yet. I have experimented with a few of the things out there that send midi etc but it's still clunky. Looking forward to fully implementing my iPad Pro into my Mac Pro studio. Thanks!

    • @TheAudioDabbler
      @TheAudioDabbler  7 лет назад

      I have had so so success getting Logic Pro X to sync with anything. Having the iConnectAudio4+ helps. It really allows me to use my iPad as an effects processor. If you have Ableton Live, Ableton link works great with syncing tempo. I will say some apps are better at it than others and the wifi connection can make a difference too. I agree that the few midi apps can be clunky, which is why I just opted to get the iCA4+. It just makes things better and easier, especially integrating an iPad and Mac pro together.
      I haven't upgraded my 2014 macbook pro to the latests Mac OS yet. I can test a few things with syncing logic and the iPad and let you know.

    Great explanation. Can you tell one thing. I have both. Say I add two IAA, the xynthesizr and the mv08 to audiobus, when I press play inside audiobus both the apps start playing. But when I add the same in the aum, I need to go to each individual apps and start play. They don't start playing when I click play in the aum. Why?

    • @TheAudioDabbler
      @TheAudioDabbler  4 года назад +1

      With IAA, AUM doesn’t really sync very well. It relies mainly on Ableton link or AUv3. Where AudioBus can speak to IAA better since most have the AudioBus SDK built in, allowing them to speak better.

    Not just where you want it to go, but how. AUM is like the real deal with its internal bus setups. Yeah, maybe it's a hassle until you do it once and save the template. I've found AUM to be useful as the grand scale project and AB more as a down and dirty grab and go. It's not pretty, but as you say if you want the equivalent of plug into the amp and play, AB is the winner. And for once someone said "both" is a solution instead of starting a pissing contest. Nice work!

    It’s 2022 and AUM seems to have won the debate. Still, I’m rediscovering that Audiobus 3 has its uses. Frankly, the debate is really about iOS app integration. It’s a landscape with changing standards and no clear direction. Really, the issue is iOS and no leadership from Apple to support music, audio routing and midi. MacOS has come a long way to embrace midi, audio and even aggregate devices - but so far Apple iOS is leaving it to 3rd party developers.

One of the reasons I ask is because I’ve discovered that mixing down/sharing a synth with a lot of delay, in all formats including so called ‘lossless’ wav, that there is distortion, whereas the GarageBand playback is pristine. I’ve tried different volume levels also.
    I’m wondering if recording direct to, say, AUM, I might be able to avoid the distortion, I suspect not though... or rather when I come to reincorporate it into a DAW for final mix down, the distortion will reappear.

      Not really, as Garage band will only accept inputs and never output them to other apps. There are ways if you have 2 iDevices or depending on what audio interface you have, you might be able to setup a loopback to capture the output of Garageband. I have not used Garageband very much, So I can not speak on the export being distorted.

      Thank you for your reply, that’s helpful to know. The synth is a rather distinctive Garageband synth, I might try and export a version without delay saturation and see if I can reproduce the same sound in a different DAW (which I don’t yet have) by applying a stereo delay and see if I can render it without the distortion.
      The distortion is fairly subtle, by the way, but the synth is such that it is most effective without distortion/overdrive.

    Jim here, Good Tutorial. With my iPad 2 its been my experience when using Audio Bus 2, I get background/room audio with my recording. When I use iAA in say Garrageband I get clean audio from app to app. I recently purchased a $140 Roland go mixer for smartphones (not a Roland affiliate) The go mixer has 2 Line in's (1/8) jack. It picks up my recording and also it works from another i0S device. No room/background audio. These were just released at NAMM 17.Maybe things have changed with Audio bus 3 or a better iPad. PS if your shirt has a pocket, I have that same shirt, lol. .

      Cool. I will have to check out that Go Mixer. I never experienced any issues with AB2 when I had my iPad 2.
      And must be a different six flags shirt, mine has no pocket. I am glad I got to ride the Georgia Cyclone a couple of times before they started tearing it down.

      Mostly what the go mixer is marketed at is a way to get a external audio signal into a (smartphone/i0S device) So audio and video sync together. For example I can run my Novation Circuit 1/8 cable from Circuit into the line in of the go mixer, the go mixer provides 2 cables, black for Android phone white (lightning) to i0S device:go mixer to smartphone hit record on mixer play on device captures everything in real time. No sync issues. No unwanted audio. Just the knobs on the go mixer seem a bit flimsy but the product just works
      Sorry don't do rides even here at the summer midway.

      Jim Shannon on Sounds - just out of curiosity- how was your setup for recording In AB2 ? What apps have you used and with what have you recorded that result?

    I have yet to buy Audiobus 3. So far, AUM is all i need. I hardly ever multitrack anymore either.

    Thanks for the video, but you should just say Audio Bus can do what AUM can do plus more. At least that’s the conclusion I got from your video ;) I haven’t tried either, so wondering which to get.

      Its a little more complicated than that. I will say that I use Audiobus less than before but its still really good for certain situations and setups. For live use, AUM is great. If you use loopy HD, then audiobus is essential.

      I see, I will look further into it then. Meanwhile, thanks to your explanation of capabilities of these apps I got Audiobus 3. Love how it makes the Inter-App Audio go away. Well rather it's now the only app that's using it so it allows smooth operation. (Haven't experienced any problems so far using it for couple of days) Though an extra *independent* step I could live without, as unfortunately the states of all connected apps can't be saved. Unless there's a way?

      if Apple kills audiobus*, AUM will still work as it relies on apples own SDKs.
      but then again .... apple might kill off own technologies**
      it happened all before :
      * killing jack audio (they wanted to do something similar to audiobus when audiobus started)
      ** killing firewire (apples own technology)

    These really are excellent guides
    - One small thing though, couldn't you just make on-screen diagrams (10 mins in photoshop) rather than flapping pieces of paper at the camera? Thanks :)

      I might could but I don't want to kill anybody with a power point presentation. Plus I don't have photoshop, but I do have Affinity Photo and Designer so those are great apps as well.

      Swear to Christ some people have the tact and common sense of a used condom. The guy post's an excellent rundown of the similarities and differences and dude points out a first world problem. If a professor in Yale uses a dry erase board vs. digital overhead projector do you discount what he's teaching? Sheeeiiit.

      TheAudioDabbler - I like the paper presentation with you writing on it as it goes. It looks more like a teacher writing at the whiteboard.. either way great job and thanks for your time!
