Delicious French onion soup, 10 minutes of work and a wonderful dinner

Where does French onion soup come from?
As with most classics, there are several theories surrounding onion soup as to where it originated. A very early recipe for "soupe a l'oignon" appeared in the 15th century in "Le Viandier" - a medieval recipe collection. Does this mean that onion soup originated in France?
