My mind was blown since I grew up loving this song by Placebo since I was a teen, and now I'm a 35 year old discovering it all over again with the original version. I now love listening to both versions even though I think Placebo did it better, but the original is incredible too. It's a wonderful song no matter how you slice it. I've been listening to both equally lately. The way the original was used in the scene with Max running from Vecna was one of the most incredible scenes in all of Stranger Things.
Don't feel bad Im 33 and was last Sunday years old when Stranger Things taught me this was actually a cover. Still prefer Placebo to Kate but both are good for their era
I grew up in a household of Kate bush, pink Floyd etc, but I always thought this was the best cover of this song I've ever heard. Just love his voice and the arrangements, beautiful backing vocals
It’s in an episode of Bones as well and fits just as perfectly. At the end of the episode her dad killed those 2 FBI agents as a warning to stay away from her and her brother.

I will always add that bitter "baby" to the thunder line, even when I listen to Kate's. So glad to see the songs are getting the attention they deserve again lately.

The tough thing about covers is that we always compare the version we first heard (usually the original) to a cover. Kate's was the version I listened to for years before Placebo released this, and I don't think I could ever love a cover more, but holy crap - this cover is spectacular. I listen to it almost as much as I listen to Kate
This was one of my favorite songs as a little child. It'd come on the radio late at night when we were driving home, it comforted me, put me in a trance, and yet made me all the more aware of the darkness surrounding me. I remember so vividly seeing the silhouette of my sister in the front seat, my mother not entirely visible in the driver side. I remember the only light was the headlights of our car on the empty highway and the little gliw in the dark indicators on the dash. At the time i was only 6 and yet this memory is burned into my mind, unforgettable.
@@High-Strangeness me aswell. It is something that holds a lot of value i think I appreciate your appreciation for glimpses into people's lives like this, I'm happy about that
First time I heard this version was back in 07 during my third tour in Afghanistan and being in a really really dark place after losing several of my closest friends and brothers in a nightmare situation... I haven't watched stranger things since season 2, just couldn't really get into it and captivated by it. But now that so many people are "discovering" this song and being played everywhere, it's brought back a whole flush of emotions that I haven't felt in so long. Crazy how music can do that to people, and the range of what emotions it brings to different people.
From a fellow veteran thank you for your service. Most people don't understand the pain of losing a close friend in combat or the horrible things we saw or had to do.
@@michaelmiller3300 ain't that the hard truth brother... Still nothing I wouldn't give to trade my best day without them than the worst days with them. I was fortunate enough to introduce my children to my closest brothers parents this past year in a visit to catch up with him at his resting post. My girls are still a little too young to understand that weight, but I'm glad they were able to be with me and meet them.
God only knows the horrors you must have witnessed. UK here but still, we seem very good at sending soldiers off to war, not so good at supporting them when they get back home x
You stole literally every line of my comment BEFORE I had even had a chance to post it 😂 Not enough credit goes to The OC. Ace soundtrack..... Lifestyles of the rich and shameless....... Mmmmm whatcha say..... & Seth Cohen being literally the most important depiction of a nerd in history. Ben Wyatt & Abed Nadir are possibly similarly great in their not stereotypical not caricaturish(sic) earnest portrayal....... but they wouldn't have existed without Seth Frickin Cohen. We don't talk about Big Bang no no no!
I can't remember if The OC (Season 4, episode 1) was the first time I heard this song, but hearing it there has definitely stuck with me. It worked really well for the self-destructive cycles that Ryan and Julie were both trapped in after Marissa's death.
I normally dont think covers are better than the original but with all the respect and love that I have for Kate's amazing art this version of Placebo is with no doubt the right version to this amazing poetry!
@@hobbsmack All things are subjective. For example, every time I listen to this song I get genuine chills. The anguish that Brian Molko imparts into an already amazing song is overwhelming. The original was an underappreciated masterpiece for the 80s, this is a powerful reimagining for the 2000s.
I’m glad this version of the song is being discovered by a younger crowd. Back in 2016 when my cat Charlie died. I play this whenever I go to visit him. I miss him so much.
I have been obsessed with Placebo since highschool, this song specifically has always hit my heart so deeply of him also is relatable. I’m glad more people appreciate it now 🖤
Kates mom was still alive when this album was released! Kate has said about this song.. “I was trying to say that, really, a man and a woman, can't understand each other because we are a man and a woman. And if we could actually swap each other's roles, if we could actually be in each other's place for a while, I think we'd both be very surprised!"
I think the song is about ones self trying to sort out this mental world that we live in and make a better place to live in and to be happy with yourself.
I'm working with disabled children. There was this young boy, can't talk, can't walk, moving unwantedly in strange ways... there was this look in his eyes, scrutinizing and I often wondered what he was thinking. When I looked at him, this song always came to my mind. To be running up that hill, to be running up that road... I was always sure, he was longing so much for it, but it will never happen, not in this lifetime. So I think yeah, Lesley is right.
I’ve got literal chills, what a well done cover of Kate Bush. Definitely puts the song into a whole other genre of music. It’s very downbeat and a slow rendition where as Kate Bush’ is more outgoing and upbeat. Perfectly done cover and it has done justice to the original

This version of the song has a more deeper and sort of monochrome effect on it, its more powerful without the need to project your voice, this is an impeccable cover!!
An example of a wonderfully thoughtful production where the band has taken the time to balance the integrity of their own sound with an equally respectful and loving Ode to the musical Gods which have brought them joy and inspiration.I remember seeing them in the SFX in Dublin years ago and they were excellent.I really love the sound they have made here, fair dues to them :).
I love the original and the Stranger Things version is amazing but Placebo cover has been the top for me for all these years. I remember listening to it everyday in school. Listening it at night before sleep only on sad days.
@soap wait a second, it's actually a "stranger things" version. In the Max's scene the song is mixed differently and there is an orchestral component. It sounds different from the original recorded by Kate Bush (beautiful anyway).
I've never been a Placebo fan, but I have to say that this cover is gold. They took an already amazing song and kept just as amazing. Hats off to you, Brian Molko!
You know that feeling where you’re sad but don’t feel like crying? You feel useless but not in a sad way, you feel like calling someone but don’t know who, you feel like doing something with your feelings but don’t wanna write a book, you wanna do something productive to show you’re of use but doesn’t know what? Yeah, it’s weird.
Placebo has been a huge part of my growth as a human being.... I used to struggle severely with eating disorders and self harm and depression and this song got me through many a bloody Night. As an adult now who struggles with anxiety ptsd addiction among other mental shit .. it's still deeply speaks to me... also its been stuck in my head cause of stranger things playing the Kate Bush original version over and over lmao so I wanted to come listen to my favorite version.
A lot of people are here from Stranger Things Season 4. But I'll always come back to this masterpiece from the promos of Shawn Michaels v Undertaker WM 26

This song and this version hits me in my soul. It speaks to me like very few songs can. There's something about his tone and the minor keys that I find captivating.

The tough thing about covers is that we always compare the version we first heard (usually the original) to a cover. Kate's was the version I listened to for years before Placebo released this, and I don't think I could ever love a cover more, but holy crap - this cover is spectacular. I listen to it almost as much as I listen to Kate
There are very few covers that I feel are better than their originals, but this is definitely one of the best.

Best version of song. I met through of Wampire diaries.
I am very sorry you had to go through this!
God only knows the horrors you must have witnessed. UK here but still, we seem very good at sending soldiers off to war, not so good at supporting them when they get back home x

Not enough credit goes to The OC. Ace soundtrack..... Lifestyles of the rich and shameless....... Mmmmm whatcha say.....

I can't remember if The OC (Season 4, episode 1) was the first time I heard this song, but hearing it there has definitely stuck with me. It worked really well for the self-destructive cycles that Ryan and Julie were both trapped in after Marissa's death.

I love Placebo since I was 14 years old! This cover is amazing, one of my BEST songs ever, but I didn,t know the original singer was Kate Bush
Placebo is one of the best bands. They don't get enough credit
This song is not about depression or breakdowns. It's about trying to save someone else.
it was actually about Kate bushes mum dying from cancer. .....
It doesn't matter if that's not what it's about, people are free to interpret songs as they please.
And I thought the original was haunting.

Do you want to know, know that it doesn't hurt me?
Do you want to hear about the deal that I'm making?
You, you and me
And if I only could
I'd make a deal with God
And I'd get him to swap our places
Be running up that road
Be running up that hill
Be running up that building
If I only could, oh
You don't want to hurt me
But see how deep the bullet lies
Unaware I'm tearing you asunder
Ooh, there is thunder in our hearts

There so much hate for the ones we love?
Tell me, we both matter, don't we?
You, you and me
You and me, won't be unhappy
And if I only could
