I bought one of these after watching the video. It is amazing. My soldering time has been cut in half and look a hundred times better.
I just got my ts80p today and it came with a cute little sponge holder and iron rest.
Did you buy it from Amazon? Banggood?
Aliexpress I believe. After using it for a few weeks now, I have to say that given its size, it's one of the best soldering irons I've ever used. I do alot of arduino stuff and the fact that I can put so much heat Into such a small place means I can solder even the hardest things ie mosfets with their heat sinks already attached! Love it and it just got a firmware update too. There is a open source firmware update, but it has a few bugs with the temp values.
@@TheZombieSaints thanks for that answer! Do you use the grounding cable? I was thinking of going Hakko only because I don’t have a stand for this and I don’t want it to just sit on my work desk and possibly melt it. And I don’t have a unit to plug the grounding cable into.
That looks like a really nice iron, but near the beginning of this year I bought a TS100 in a Banggood sale for £32 since it runs off a basic 12v-24v barrel connector, can plug it into one of my 4S packs in the field with a cable I made if needs be.
I was so impressed with it that the same day I received it I ordered another at the same price as a very long-term backup :)
yessss. my TS100 handles ALL of my soldering needs. for three years now
i use the RALIM firmware on mine. All their models are fantastic IMO
Painless, I can very much recommend a chisel tip instead of a point. 1. It has more heat capacity compared to a similar sized point tip so the temperature will be more stable. 2. It will have more contact area with the piece so it transfers heat "faster" which help when you solder stuff with plastic like xt60 or deans (anyone still uses deans?) because the heat has less time to spread and melt the plastic.
It really depends on the job you are soldering. Fine work with closely spaced pads on a flight controller need a fine tip, an XT90 needs a chunky spade. I use a Weller soldering station with interchangeable tips for all my builds (see the photo on my Instagram feed - my original Weller station finally died after about 30 years of service!). This is very much an iron for those tiny jobs and places where I dont have the station handy. Happy flying!
Very worthwhile upgrades it looks like. More power, USB-C PD, the tip ejector.
I change tips a lot so these types of tips are great because they don’t get very hot at the back where they plug in so you can pop them out and grab them easily (the ejector helps too).
My only real complaint with the TS80 (other than being USB-C QC 3.0 and not Power Delivery, which has now been sorted) is that while it has that great tip changing system, they never really released many tips for them, which I think is a shame. On the flip side, like you said I find that these cartridge type tips are much more forgiving of being the “wrong” size than the older ceramic element tips like most of us are used to, so the irony is now that I have this sort of iron, I don’t *need* to change tips as much...
@03:50 I'd argue the lack of a flat spot to keep it from rolling off the table is only an issue once you add the Wireless Adapter™ to it and should pose no issue while in Wired Mode™ 🙂
The original TS80 has a tip ejection solution, albeit not as fast: the lower bit of the handle unscrews, pushing the tip out. Great review, thanks for sharing this!
Looks great. To be fair it's more pricey than I expected, but if they last as you say then I guess they are worthwhile. Thanks for the heads up on the new model.
For me the value proposition changed when I tried one and realized it could become my primary soldering station and completely displace a Hakko 888D that cost around the same. Now if your “primary” station is a Pace or JBC or something, maybe not, but then the TS-80 is much much cheaper than those things.
I think for small field repair jobs it will be fine. I prefer ts100, with standard barrel connector.
Great review, Lee! 😊
I still don't have anything with USB C, so... I really don't know. But I have the TS100 and love it! 😊
Stay safe there with your family! 🖖😊
Yeah, I love my TS 100. Such an awesome little iron. I use it as my main soldering iron. Did you update yours with the realm firmware? If not, I highly recommend it.👊
For everyone who is still using a ts100 because you can "12v/ 3s lipo power it" , THE TS80 CAN ALSO BE 12V/ 3S LIPO POWERED!!
No need for the mains adaptor..
Thanks for the review, really useful. Whilst at first I was dubious being based on USB (USB 2 only 500mA max which has been my previous experience) but running USB 3 at 2A 30W is certainly useful for SMD components, not for anything needing heat sinking though. These USB irons drop tip heat like you wouldn't believe as they have little heat inertia. Would be useful to make that clear for nuubs.
BTW it won't roll due to the huge thick USB lead 😉.
Thanks again bud, AWESOME and helpful content as always.
The TS80 doesn't behave like other usb irons (5-8W pieces of junk), it is far more powerful (18W or 30W for this new one). And with an excellent tip design that reduces heat creep into the handle, it performs almost as well as a 60W bench iron. Dave Jones did some testing of large solder jobs with the TS80: ruclips.net/video/_Z9es-D9_8g/видео.html
This thing actually works. I have the older model and it'll solder straight to 18650s (don't do this cause liability).
I don't think I've found anything that I would want a dedicated iron for as of yet. It solders xt90 connectors just fine and those aren't that easy. 8-10ga wire into a large bullet connector....
Yeah, like these guys said, cartridge tips are much more efficient with heat than the traditional ceramic tips we’re used to, and can do a lot with surprisingly low power.
Even between the TS100 and the older 18W TS80, Marco Reps did. a comparison and found them pretty close in performance.
Remember also that these computerized irons are almost never actually running at full power, they throttle based on demand to keep the temperature stable. So while a TS100 might be capable of 70W, it probably rarely, if ever, hits that power.
They now have full on laptops that charge from USB C and it’s crazy
@@vaguedirector_7342 he's the man! Cheers, will take a watch.
I just received this iron from banggood and am having trouble with it.Using the supplied power brick and usb-c cable. The iron will turn on and reach the heating/setting screen. As soon as I chose either option, the iron restarts and goes through the boot sequence again. Any advice?
I wonder why this one isn't as powerful as the TS100. USB PD is capable of 100W (20V, 5A) so it's not like it's a USB power problem.
Because it's only designed for QC 3.0.
I have the original ts80, I flashed a modified firmware from GitHub and it can do 30w of power. The only upgrade I see with this new one is it can use pd2.0 psu instead of only qc
you can add a spot of sugru to make a flat spot so it doesn’t roll around.
Nice solder like it very much.
It would be interesting to see what changes have been made to get the extra power out of it considering the tips are the same, it would be great if it was just firmware or something simple we could mod to upgrade the ts80
Probably mostly hardware. The original used QC 3.0 power, which is limited to 9V 2A, aka 18W, new one also has Power Delivery circuitry in the USB, which can deliver much more power (in fact up to 100W but that requires the proper circuitry in the connector and also the internal components of the iron).
Different hardware components definitely. Software can't make something handle a lot more power, it has to physically be rated to handle the increase in power
Is the new Ts80p useable with a power bank?
Bought my ts80 originally to have a portable soldering iron on the field for me. Really don’t want to run around with a AC plug all the time. Can’t find a way to make my original work with a power bank. Would love to know if anyone has a solution to the TS80 or TS80P for powerbanks.
Does the tip holder of the TS80 fit on the TS80P? I know it's stupid but I kinda like the straight shape of the TS80.
I think I show that in the video... Best of luck!
Looks way better than my cheap soldering iron from Lidl 🤣
Ts100 is the one to have!
I order mine I like the 30 watt and ejector
Lee.....thanks for video, looks like a handy little gadget to have in your Kit, Pocket, tool case..! A bit Pricey though....maybe some day...? =)
Good review!!
I have seen other irons in amazon called ts100....can you please clarify what are the copy and what are the originals. And if there are a copy an lower price , should you recommend any in specific. Thanks
TS100 is a different model. Happy flying
@@Painless360 thanks!!
Has anyone found a good powerbank for this iron? My Anker PD one cuts out as soon as it starts heating
Yeah I use a comsole model DPC20GY. 45w. 20100mAh. 72.4 Wh. Works a treat
can anyone please tell me how i install the firmware? i found the firmware file reasonably easy but i cannot for the life of me find HOW to install said file.
It's covered in the manual. You need to copy it to the drive that appears on your computer when you plug it in.... Best of luck
@@Painless360 yeah I worked it out. You gotta hold the button closest to the 'business end' when you plug it into your pc. I ended up just watching a how to video for the ts80 firmware update...turns out they're exactly the same. Who would have thunk it ay? ;)
Would you recommend this over TS100?
In my opinion it depends on your priorities. I think the ergonomics on the TS80 are much better, and I personally like being able to use my laptop power supply to power it. As for temperature, I never run my iron as hot as the TS100 can go, and don’t knock the lower power until you’ve tried it. With that type of tip a lower power iron is more effective than you’d think. The two things the TS100 has going for it is a greater variety of tips (having the right tip reduces the need to run at high temp or higher power), and lower price (because it’s plastic and has been around a while).
The TS100 has a bit more power, so if you're often soldering thick wire or XT60/XT90 connectors it would be nicer. Also it's easier to power the TS100 off a LiPo pack, all you need is a cable.
If I didn't already have a TS100, I might consider this, except for the tips. And the temp limit. And the heat up time ( TS100 on 24V is even faster) , and the ease of powering. On second thought, if I didn't have a TS100, I'd buy one. Really good review, But I'll stick with its bigger , more capable brother. For someone who wanted the power supply and iron all in one, this would be easier than the TS100, as it comes with it's own supply. I have a 400W 24V supply at my bench, so I am much more set up than someone starting out. That might be the appeal for some buyers.I do find I need the 450 temp limit of the TS100 when I'm soldering battery leads, etc.
Damnit, I just purchased the TS80 😓
I’m in the same boat, I just purchased a DIY equivalent that uses Weller tips, this update fixed almost all the dealbreaker issues I had with the TS-80...
So the old ones spare now?
Can I buy it off you? Could use something smaller for the house instead of carting round my 2 in 1 hot station.
Or might have something interesting to swap you...
Nice & Thanks :)
I'm trying to find a good replacement motor for my volantex ranger ex. It came with a 1300kv with a 10x5 prop on a 4s battery. Motor mount spun and twisted the wires inside. I have found 2 motors that would do it, but everywhere I look everyone is out of stock. Any ideas?
USB C hell yeah baby.
👍❤️
