In my high school history class, many many years ago. Our teacher was a diminutive fellow, mild mannered weighing perhaps 140 pounds. One of my fellow students was a pain in the ass and challenged the teacher send him to the principle's office. Student weighed maybe 200 pounds. Teacher had had a rough day and finally had enough. He told the kid "no, I'm not taking you to the principals office", whereupon, he walked over to the kid, picked him up and tossed him out the window. Kid came back the next day and apologized, and was very quiet. We loved it. No names here.
"No names"? Come on!! I remember one time in class in Jr. H. S. there was this smart ass punk (not too dissimilar to Vic Morrow's character here) who kept mouthing off to this middle aged++ male teacher all the time. Finally, one day the teacher had enough and told punk to get out and go to Principal's office. The kid wouldn't. So the teacher lost it! Grabbed the kid, smacked the kid around, then thru him out. That kid was a mess. In H. S. he was a drunk all the time I think he died in the street an alcoholic in like his late 20's. Also, in Jr. H. S. we had a couple of other psycho punks. One time they put a bomb in desk of a black English teacher (on 1st floor). But it exploded as they were jumping out the window. I was sitting in French class on 3rd floor. We all heard a loud BOOM!! and the desks all jumped off the floor. To say the least, those 2 punks were gone!! Both probably long dead.
Surprisingly not my first time hearing a story of this kind. My mother told a story a teacher who lifted these two bully kids by their shirts and chucked them down the stairs and told them to go to the principals office, which they did. My father had the best story, a teenage kid, 17 or 18, wanted to fight this teacher after school. They met by his car, they boxed the teacher's vehicle in so he couldn't leave. Teacher was smart, he took the first shot and made sure it bled. Teacher was a former boxer. Maybe my dad exaggerated a little bit but he said it looked like 7 punches in 2 seconds, if they were barely visible to the human eye. Put the kid in the hospital. The teacher was transferred, not fired. Though honestly should have kept him. That student would most definitely have been a very well behaved boy the rest of his time I'm school. Moral of the story, always ask old people what their best, teachers from the old days stories.
@@joshuagerthoffer4664 According to the novel, Dadier checked all the I.Q.s of these students in this classroom. Greg Miller's is the highest ( over 100), and Artie West is the lowest ( about 64?) all the other students, in the 70s and 80s.

He's awesome in his first film role, as a young doctor in the midst of racial prejudice and turmoil, in "No Way Out" (1950) -- roughly five years before "Blackboard Jungle."
When i was very young, around 9 or 10, one summer one of the local channels ran a classic Hollywood movie every week, with no commercial interruption. This was one of the films, and it was quite scary at the time...
I'm sure Billy the Kid was troublesome student in school, in the 1800's whenever. If he ever went to school. Didnt he shoot and kill his first man when he was like 15? Then died when he was like 20?
My dad was a Navy fighter pilot in WWII. He taught Jr High after the war in the early 50's, and kept a fraternity paddle in the class room. He was 5'7", but no one messed with him. He was also fleet boxing champ in his weight class, and was trained in hand to hand combat. He was fearless and would have smacked the crap out of this kid, knife or no knife.

Yeah, that sure would have fixed the systemic problems that lead to this situation, let's fantasize about hitting the fictional kid in the fictional scenario....
Great movie. I watched it for the first time a few nights back. The bad kid was played by the same actor who played the racist guy in The Twilight Zone movie. I never knew this but the actor was actually killed by a pretty nasty set accident involving a helicopter. Shocking stuff.
Media doesn’t mention this movie in Sydney Poitier’s life of films. I guess because it wasn’t race-consciousness related specifically. But even in this film he’s basically a good guy. I read that he never wanted to play the bad guy.
Fun fact: Quentin Tarantino directed the daughters of Sidney Poitier and Vic Morrow in his work. Sydney Tamilia in "Death Proof" and Jennifer Jason Leigh in "The Hateful Eight".
@@triciajohansen7124 His voice was kinda deep, but in my opinion he still looked quite young. Especially when Dadier shoved his body into the blackboard. You can see the kid in him come out (especially in his eyes).

When were you in high school? This (almost) happened at Redondo High school around 1970-71, in Drivers Ed. class, it was a warm day, the only door in the room was open wide, this was a FULL,and well-behaved classroom, but I soon noticed the young, thirtyish male teacher was looking, and looking outside; so he got up and went out - and most of the class was rushing over to the open door, NO, me and alot of others couldn't see what was going on. One of the boys said the teacher was breaking up a fight between two boys - soon one of them pulled a knife on him! But soon another teacher came out, and that was broken up, the knife was taken from him and the other teacher was taking both of them over to the principals office - so we suddenly rushed back to our desks, our teacher came back in, but he didn't talk about it.
That is how I always thought of Vic Morrow, a grubby little psycho criminal punk. Even in "Combat" and any other role he had later in life. Sidney Poitier was 27 or 28 in this movie, yet he's playing s H. S. student? Most of these are way older than H. S. age. There is Jamie Farr (Corporal Klinger). 1955 movie
He beat out Steve McQueen for the role of Artie West in this movie. Vic had studied/trained hard in acting school for about 5 years when he auditioned for this role. However, this was his first screen role because his school had prohibited him from doing any television/movies while he was enrolled.
These thugs seem wimpy by today’s standards. Unfortunately nowadays we hear of students having firearms in schools. So sad how our society has become but this was 1955 and the thug with the knife would be considered wimpy today
If you think about movie and television standards this is probably as bad as he was allowed to be. He said “hell” after all. (Meanwhile the n word is dropped in this movie no one batted an eye back then)
Inlonging. You're incorrect about no one in the movie batting an eye when the "n"-word was said. On the contrary, the Mr. Dadier character is reprimanded by the principal because the principal to heard that Dadier used that word in his classroom (he did but was just repeating it as a word that shouldn't be used by other races against black people). Despite what many today believe, I don't think racial slurs were all that socially acceptable in the 1950s; many people probably considered them, if not immoral, then vulgar and crass.
