    The Messerschmitt Bf 109 is a German World War II fighter aircraft that was, along with the Focke-Wulf Fw 190, the backbone of the Luftwaffe's fighter force. The Bf 109 first saw operational service in 1937 during the Spanish Civil War and was still in service at the end of World War II in 1945. It was one of the most advanced fighters when it first appeared, with an all-metal monocoque construction, a closed canopy, and retractable landing gear. It was powered by a liquid-cooled, inverted V12 aero engine. It was called the Me 109 by Allied aircrew and some German aces, even though this was not the official German designation.
    It was designed by Willy Messerschmitt and Robert Lusser who worked at Bayerische Flugzeugwerke during the early to mid-1930s. It was conceived as an interceptor, although later models were developed to fulfill multiple tasks, serving as bomber escort, fighter-bomber, day-, night-, all-weather fighter, ground-attack aircraft, and reconnaissance aircraft. It was supplied to several states during World War II and served with several countries for many years after the war. The Bf 109 is the most produced fighter aircraft in history, with a total of 34,248 airframes produced from 1936 to April 1945. Some of the Bf 109 production took place in Nazi concentration camps through slave labor.
    The Bf 109 was flown by the three top-scoring fighter aces of all time, who claimed 928 victories among them while flying with Jagdgeschwader 52, mainly on the Eastern Front. The highest-scoring, Erich Hartmann, was credited with 352 victories. The aircraft was also flown by Hans-Joachim Marseille, the highest-scoring ace in the North African Campaign who shot down 158 enemy aircraft (in about a third of the time). It was also flown by many aces from other countries fighting with Germany, notably the Finn Ilmari Juutilainen, the highest-scoring non-German ace. Pilots from Italy, Romania, Croatia, Bulgaria, and Hungary also flew the Bf 109. Through constant development, the Bf 109 remained competitive with the latest Allied fighter aircraft until the end of the war.

      @@kevinwirga6021 Usually, that kind of "mistake" is the sign of a robotic voice (like Speechelo). Don't think that was used here, however, most seems to be archival footage.

    Chuck Yeager flew the ME-109 and declared it the worst aircraft he had ever flown because of its dangerous ground takeoff handling and its terrible cockpit visibility.

      And yet it was still an ace maker of a plane. You are correct though, it's narrow carriage claimed many a luftwaffe pilot, but the visibility did improve with later variants.

      depends on the time, place and the resources available... the Americans and British mostly used stencils or hand painted their kill and other non-official markings.

    16:00 - "850 caliber machine guns." Let's see. 0.50 caliber is half an inch.. so we are talking 1700 inch (669.3 cm) guns! That's bigger than any gun carried aboard battleships!!! The diameter of the barrel is over 141.6 feet (over 47.2 meters) wide!!! That's AMAZING!
    Okay, most of us know that you are talking about the P-47 Thunderbolt, which carries eight .50 caliber (12.7mm) machine guns.
    We're one third of the way in and already there are glaring errors.

      i think it mainly comes down to the mustang having a more optimal wing loading for its weight and power... it might be hard to think about today... but the world was a lot bigger 80 years ago. the German and American aircraft designers came from completely different schools of thought and design philosophy.

    All due respect to the german pilot when he was referring to the constant improvements to both the spitfire and messerschmitt yes that correct however im not clear his suggesting that the british took a ME 109 daimler benz engine apart and copied what exactly ,,,? rolls royce didn't need to copy anything from the engine it all already had a better engine than the dimier benz other than the fuel injection There was nothing to take away from it,
    the british already had a replacement engine should more power be needed the griffon engine spitfire , the spitfire mk 9 engine was also used on the p51 mustang it didnt fair to well either against that mien herr

    A very dangerous aircraft for the novice, over 11,000 crashed on landing or take off alone! Luftwaffe pilots claimed they loved it despite its cramped cockpit and poor visibility. Its high kill ratio being mainly due to the poor quality aircraft ir fought in Poland, France and especially Russia. Only the Spitfire matched it throughout WW2 followed by P-47 and P-51

      Bf109 had a bad crash record, but I have a reality check for you; on every single aircraft type.... losses in training, stupidity or navigation errors was very high. Pilots regularly lost their original planes and had to change to a new one...one British Ace even lost his legs (Bader).

    I never understood why the F4u Corsair wasn't utilized in Europe. The F4u was far better than anything there, American, British or German. Probably politics. I thought this was a documentary on the Messerschmitt 109?

    out of 120 only 15 returned yeah why not mention the numerical superiority of the US? prob in that mission there was a 1000 US planes...they were always outnumbered way outnumbered, and the late 109s easy took on mustangs and thunderbolts and the 109s def could out turn them.

    The English copied our engines. No fuel injection in the Merlin. No methanol injection. No mechanical engine computer .How so?

      The Merlin and later Griffon had very good 2-speed mechanical superchargers and so did not really need water or methanol injection

      The nazi engines had no evaporative cooling in the supercharger, no 2 stage supercharging until some FW190Ds, no intercooling until a very few FW190Ds, no automatic supercharger speed switching, no high altitude peak outputs well above 20,000 feet, no smaller displacement with higher power output, no corrosion resistant alloys, no ultra high boost detonation and pre ignition resistant fuel, no superior hydraulic constant speed propeller control and no non-slave production workforce. In spring 1945 they didn’t even have fuel. How come they lost?

A powerful supercharger does not eliminate the need for water injection, it is what creates a need for water injection in some engines. A non-supercharged (naturally aspirated) engine can make no use of water injection at all.
      The purpose of water injection is to cool the fuel/air charge entering the cylinders. The charge has been heated by compression in the supercharger(s). The charge coolers installed cool the charge to the point where a given amount of manifold pressure can be sustained given the octane rating (knock resistance) of the fuel. If the engine is structurally capable of sustaining greater cylinder pressures than the octane will allow without detonation, water injection can allow use of greater manifold pressure for short periods, limited by the water supply and the structural strength of the engine components.
      German engines used water injection because they had very limited quantities of C3 fuel (about 100 octane). Water injection allowed higher manifold pressures than the more plentiful B4 fuel (roughly 87 octane) could support without detonation. These fighters needed water injection because the fuel was the limiting factor rather than the strength of the engine components.
      The British did not really need water injection because they had ample quantities of high octane fuel. With this fuel the Merlin engine was able to run close to the maximum cylinder pressures the engine components would withstand. Water injection offered only marginal improvement at the cost of significant engine stress.

Germans didn’t have “automatic speed switching superchargers”? They had variable speed superchargers made for all altitudes of climb not just 2 setting high/low like p51s did. I implore you to go to Greg so you can be educated.

      Thats not saying a lot, it spent its early years fighting 1920`s era Bi-planes etc in the Spanish civil war, and much the same during the early days of bliztkrieg, had a good engine, but take away the fuel injection and it was not as good as the Merlin, and was limited to further enhancment.

    In fact 109 was imperfect anf full of fatal flaws even at ist birth. By the end of the war it was hopelessly outdated. No modifications could shorten it's growing distance to the Spit or Mustang. The only allied fighters the 109 could dominate over were soviet planes before Yak-3.

      In Finland 1944 109G KILL RATIO WAS 43:1 Against of Soviet and lend-lease airplanes. It didn`t made any different where enemy planes was made. Battlegroup Kuhlmey (Stuka, 109 and 190) was there in three weeks and bombed ground targets. It lost 22 and killed 120 soviet airplanes.

    Most of the information on bf109 g6 BLACK 6 is complete rubbish.
    ESPECIALLY the information regarding it being assessed by the RAF ... it sat for over two years untouched finally being tested and evaluated in 1945
