  • “there was this music box that my mothers had given me. for the longest time it felt like a burden to hold it, like, it was some huge expectation for me. i’d been so cautious to keep it safe and tidy, but i wondered a lot about the nature of these things. is sentimentality really that strong? to want to preserve what’s essentially a wooden box with metal tines inside of it, only because it’s considered ‘special’? well. i think it intimidated me and upset me for a long time. just the idea of trying to maintain it. i felt like i had grown since i left for yakyakistan.
    so i destroyed it.
    not because i hated it.
but because i finally learned to love it.
still, i will not be defined by the keepsakes of my past. i decided to destroy the music box and begin constructing a new instrument out of it. one that could be electrically conducted, amplified like a guitar. i’m not sure what the instrument i ended up making could be called. but i’ll play you the song i made with it. it’s called ‘soundscape diary’ and i think you’ll love it.”

    LYRICS:
Obviously, it’s not going to work the same, because it’s broken
    -
    Placing the cornerstones
Might be that you don’t get to watch it grow
Still the shelter that you made
Will foster you from the cold that kept you awake
    Every weave, and every thread
By candlelight, the stroke of a pen
Like every thought and every dream
    There’s a place for everything
    -
In a diary of audile ardency
    Blooming in waves and shimmers
Sailing against the currents that tore you down
And they’ll tear you down again
Still the sea foam splashes on your smiling face
There’s a magic that only you can tell
All your greatest art should satisfy
    Nobody but yourself
    -
    Every weave, and every thread
By candlelight, the stroke of a pen
Like every thought and every dream
    There’s a place for everything

The fact that part of this song was LITERALLY made from a broken music box actually makes me like this song even MORE! Yes, Canni, I love this song. Thank you for making it and this album.

Never thought i would behold a music piece that literally starts from a broken music box, yet as it goes on, it feels like we're being brought along in the journey as the music box is gradually fixed and then improved on.
Seriously, at this point, Vylet should compose for a short animation or a movie at this point. Vylet just does so many interesting music pieces, it keeps you listening for more than a couple of times, not to mention that this "fixing a music box / maybe yourself too" might be one of the most mind-blowing details i've ever seen and or felt. This might be an example that Vylet can do a lot of story telling from just music. Imagine if they work on an animation. Man...

Her music is the most powerful music in the world to me, something about the stories she tells and the banger melodies coinciding together.

“can opener’s notebook: fish whisperer” is a concept album about a neurodivergent unicorn named can opener (canni).
once an overachieving marine biologist, the ocean-fixated canni leaves home to pursue their lifelong dream of being a musician, in a quiet cabin on the yakyakistan coast. their fixation on using electronics and broken instruments to create music, while simultaneously becoming detached from their skills as a scientist, earns the disapproval of their parents.
canni finds work as a marine biologist and angler in yakyakistan, quickly becoming invested in improving the fishing industry in the country. however, this work begins to take precedence over canni’s desire to create music, leaving them burnt out and depressed.
can opener falls into an isolated and sensitive state of mind, rarely leaving their home and becoming self conscious of their fixations and interests outside of their profession. this spiraling anxiety causes them to become speculative about the opinions other yaks have about them. this only causes them to further isolate themselves, becoming evem lonelier.
they reach out to their ex-girlfriend, vylet lulamoon, who advises them to journal their abstract thoughts in a physical way (such as on a typerwiter). through this, canni learns of a strange magic they possess which emanates from them at their most contemplative and spaced out moments. the magic appears in the form of little golden fish that swim around their horn, causing the unicorn’s mane to become weightless, as if floating under the sea.
one fateful day, their friend yona encourages them to attend the annual hippogriff cultural festival, an event that is held to celebrate the friendship of yaks and hippogriffs.
reluctantly, can opener agrees to go.
    -
“fish whisperer” is about overcoming art block, being transparent about yourself, and learning to find love in every corner of life; becoming saturated in the things you love to do and see. throughout their journey, canni explores their spectral magic, reconnects with the ones they love, and follows the call of a mysterious rainbow fish.

Vylet, i don't know if you'll read this but...you know Vylet, I always thought that your content is just top tier and is pretty much unassailable (so to say) by anything. I've seen all there is and you're just the best of the best. Your content are nothing but intense surges of fresh creativity and sweet delight, it's just...amazing. Yet this piece managed to...I'm not even sure. But let's say the least that it blew my mind away. I don't think I can recall a music piece from a movie or short animation or just about anywhere, with the motif of "making this music box into something more instead of keeping it as is / making myself into someone different but still the same but better." By the time I realized that the beginning part of the song is in a form of a broken music box, I thought that was interesting, but then it goes on and then evolved into something new. Combine that with pacing and direction of the message of the song, as well as the instrument change as the song goes on? From just metal tines to electrical instruments (maybe synth)? To be honest, I'm at a loss of words. You manage to break and blew my ceiling of expectations twice over. Not only you managed to create a "motif" so to say of "I'm fixing this music box and also turning it into something new, and therefore I'm somewhat doing the same to me to show that," you made the song sound so good, while keeping up that "motif," I can listen to this almost seemingly forever.
Just...well hecking done Vylet. Bravo. To be quite honest, I think you would do great creating an OST for a movie or a short animation, this piece just feels like a great example of...i suppose, subtle story-telling. Again, well hecking done, Vylet.
You're pure magic in this gray world, i'd say. You're my idol. At this point, I'm kinda glad that you're a one-of-a-kind artist and I hope...i suppose I hope no one can replace you, and that your legacy runs eternal. You're unique in my eyes.
Also sorry if this raises any red flags or anything, I'm just blown away by this song and by Vylet's content making skills-
    QwQ

im hardly even a minute in as i start to type this, but this already sounds magical in ways i cannot describe in words. something about it echoes into my heart and gives me this feeling of hope, like "hey, dont worry. youll come to love yourself one day." yet it also feels understanding, like "but the waiting and working on yourself until that day comes is painful, and i get that." its a little broken, but what isnt? its very "you can do it. i know you can." and it shines through. it perfectly showcases canni's current state of finally growing to be just a little bit more okay with themself. i love this so much, thank you for always making such wonderful music with so much emotion and love and care, because man does it ever resonate with me.
this is magical. its a journey, and its one that i like to believe will have a happy ending. now if youll excuse me i have to loop this for 3 straight hours lmao

The little piece of Canni's story posted in the description of all these songs is great!
The sounds at the beginning of part 3 always made me imagine a happy little robot coming to life when I was listening to it before, and knowing it in a way represents a new instrument "coming to life" is a really fun connection. The creative use of sound in this album gives me a lot of strong imagery and this is one of my favorite parts 💙

If you like this, I’d definitely check out porter robinson’s nuture album. This trilogy has the same feel as the nuture album. The glitchiness, the acapellas, and the funky groove beat.
      Someone else’s nuture, I suppose.

my personal favorite song of the LP; such a beautiful track from an absolutely phenomenal record. love the storytelling in this album and the overall message. can't help but bust my guts singing along to "all your greatest art should satisfy nobody but yourself" as if to remind myself of the fact as i continue writing my self-indulgent novel that will probably never see the light of day lol. but that's fine, i'm still happy with it and proud of myself for what i've accomplished so far. it's crazy how much you learn and accomplish once you just let go of perfectionism and allow yourself to unapologetically just create without concern of what others are going to think. it's a true gift. thank you vylet
