Why not neck tattoos. Maybe becuse of real talent.
This is probably the worst thing I have ever heard Hvorostovsky ever sing. He never really digs into the piece. It's an odd song about how his love is being eaten by worms but even so it can be effective when sung by the right singer.
There are two approaches depending on your voice. Carlo Buti sings it beautifully but very subdued and repressed. Caruso and Corelli sing it full voice as does Bastianini. Hvorostovsky seems to fail to commit to an approach. .
Patrick, this is a Neapolitan song by Vincenzo Bellini. Mario del Monaco said one time that singing such repertoire is much more difficult than opera because you need to master Neapolitan dialect. None of foreign opera singers was able to do it. Nicolai Gedda, Leonard Warren, Ian Peerce, Fritz Wunderlich, Placido Domingo or Jose Carreras are some famous examples who used to include these songs in their concerts. Jussi Bjorling was very close in some songs only. They rather put more attention on great technique and voice beauty. So, do not wonder that Dmitri missed your expectations. Still, I think his performance is worth listening.

Плохо. И неприятно смотреть, как он напрягается извлекая звук и думая только об этом, а не создаваемом им образе. Слабый и незаслуженно раскрученный певец.
Да! Абсолютно верно! Мне кажется, что он форсировал звук даже, пел в себя... Короче, это полный провал... Ужас! Неандерталец стал "великим" баритоном! 🤣
С вами согласен абсолютно.кто сомневается советую послушать Карузо ну..или хотя-бы Марио Ланца.

Просто в сравнении с ними всё сразу становится на свои места даже для тех кто абсолютно лишён музыкального вкуса и понимания.
