  • Lee Hazlewood is America's Serge Gainsbourg: the prime exponent of sexual licentiousness, brutal emotional honesty and defeated, but heroic, masculinity.
I like a little macabre Dirtnap Stories, especially the line: "And I said 'how does it feel' like all god's promises are broken it's like dying on christmas day before all the gifts are open..."

The serge comparison is spot on! I have also made that connection. Throw in Townes and you have three of the greatest song writers righ there.

Brilliant and seriously heart- breaking. Think it was Nancy? Brilliant .."dying on Christmas Day ... before ...gifts are open". Not to mention "all God's promises are broken".

Not many songs cover such a wide panorama of a deep love of humanity....maybe this could be taught in schools as an example of being a good person, it's not always about being obnoxious....

    I'm reminded of Leonard Cohen.

Very much Leonard Cohen even though I personally believe he can't hold a candle to Lee. This song is very similar though.

Musically similar to The Stranglers' "Golden Brown".

its a simple thing musically but it carries a punch because it describes the pain of losing love and friendship!! but then not all "gods promises" get broken, wat! and we'll just book mr. Dirtnap into the TIPTON, under the rule of mr.Mosbey, and let Zack n Cody have a wack at him....cheers rjm
