  • Specialist Demolition Contractor, Connell Brothers Ltd, was appointed to demolish one of Manchester Airport’s largest hangers.
The hangar was located on the western edge of the airport, in a highly prominent location adjacent to the World Freight Terminal with direct runway access.
“Hangar Two” was commissioned by Amec in 1993, Booth provided the complete design, manufacture, installation and commissioning of the hangar doors which were 72m wide allowing access to the large 747 series Jumbo jets. Originally used by British Airways for maintenance, the 72,000 Sq Ft hangar was most recently operated by Air Livery Ltd for aircraft refinishing.
Connell Brothers carried out complex internal strip-out works within the 30-metre-high hangar. Strict rules on Foreign Object Debris (FOD) were adhered to as this was a key safety risk.
Once the strip-out works were complete, Connell Brothers Ltd used a 90-tonne specialist Caterpillar 375 high-reach excavator to carry out the mechanical demolition.
