    In alabama we don’t have to title boats nor trailers, 1973 year model and up vessels require a registration sticker and must have up to a 12 digit number on each side of the hull, in theory just a bill of sale is all that is needed! We might not have state lotto or good education but we can snag abandon boats with ease, just get bubba or Becky down the street to sign it and off you are with your new resto project vessel.

    Florida complains a lot about abandoned boats, but don't make the process of getting one easy in any way. There laws have to change to make the process better. I have tryed quite a few times to get abandoned boats or with out a title,but no luck. Your right about sketchy at best. The boat I came the closest to geting was a Catalina 26, I could get a title, but if the original owner wanted the boat back, I would lose all the money I would have put into it,and would have to give it back. I have seen a friend go through that and don't want to go down that road.

      NC is similar. The process is so convoluted that it incentivizes people to ignore proper registration. They need to change the laws. It's a mess.

      It is difficult for a reason friend. IF it were simplified then people would have boats stolen left and right with no real recourse to get it back. An easy process means anyone can do paperwork for just about any boat or vehicle and own it.

    There is an option for a no hin small boat like that. You can do work on it like replacing the fwd deck etc and apply for a new title and hin for a home made boat. Only a small percentage needs to be home made in order for it to be legal. HOWEVER IF there is a hin or a fl number they will trace that out and you will not get it.

  • @connormcclenny809
    @connormcclenny809 2 года назад +2

    The HIN on 13 ft whalers is located on the inside of the boat below the dead center transom. You may have to sand down the painted on white paint. That’s an aftermarket paint so it is probably just painted over. The HIN itself is just painted on in the original Gelcoat.
    If the original gel coat was sanded off then you’re SOL.

    My neighbour gave me an 18-5 ft hardtop boat and I had to go to a Notary Public and swear out an oath as to where I got it.Cost me $ 25.00 Canadianfor the notary.I was able to replace the stringers,floor, and transom with the help of RUclips videos.I have owned 17 boats in my 70 years and had fun fixing this one up.I did have to purchase used motors for it. In Canada it is possible to salvage boats that otherwise wind up as big litter.CHEERS

    Good thing that Whaler had FL #s on it. The HIN numbers were painted on the inside of the transom on that generation. That Whaler looks like it’s been repainted, so finding the hidden number would be almost impossible if it had no FL #s.

      Some states it's nearly impossible to transfer a boat, motor, trailer from other states. Mo. is one of those. All three components have to be titled as one or separately. Some nearby states allow Bill of Sale on trailers/outboards which you can't get titled without months/years of red tape.

    I'm up in merritt island, there are moored boats in the Indian River literally capsized and sunk, at least a dozen that i know of, and they've been like that for many months, some over a year. I'm curious if FWC or local law does anything about it, most are leaking fuel, oil, and god knows what. Ive often wondered about salvaging or at least getting the boats removed for the sake of our waters.

In Virginia is cost $25.00 and it's a hassle, lots of paperwork and you have to track the process, but it you want a title, it's the only way to get one.

People just abandon them or never use them and then they rot away. That Whaler would probably be worth it if it’s free and you can get a title. Foam core. Well built. Might be good for a cheap build. NOTHING is allowed to be removed from them once the USCG or their hired contractor hooks to them.

    It's absolutely insane how difficult they make it to salvage abandoned boats, not to mention abandoned cars. I've known several mechanics over my life and a few tow truck drivers too and they always end up with these abandoned cars that they then have to jump through a mountain of hoops to retitle and claim (even in cases where a person owes THEM money for repairs performed). Abandoned boats seem like an even worse problem.
    To me it should be pretty simple. If you have left your property for more than say 30 days on public waterways it should be free to claim with minimal effort (make it 60 days if you want, Hell make it 90 days if you need to). It should also be easier for people to abandon or give away boats or vehicles. A simple quit claim deed or title form generated at the tax collectors should be enough. The local government could publish announcements of boats that were signed over and allow people to come bid on them or buy them for the cost of the paperwork and processing along with making them sign paperwork obligating them to clear the vessel from any public waterways or land.
    The whole situation is just sheer madness. The current system incentivizes people to abandon their property AND it incentivizes them to remove registration information or HIN or VIN numbers so that the boats simply can't be traced. That's a terrible way to run the system.
