I visited Malta for 10 days in 1980 and stayed in Birzebbuga. I will never forget it and have always wanted to return. I was loaned a small motorbike and roamed all over the Island. I will never forget it.
I did go to the Hypogeum, and while it was incredibly well preserved and fascinating ( somewhat pricy), you can only go in on a tour which was great because it give a lot of information. But I discovered while staying in Rabat more tombs, costing only a few euro and they are extensive, and they let you explore on your own and your shoes would not be an issue. Rabat is a must see anyhow.
Standby flyer here. Thinking about going to Malta next week. Thank you for your informative videos! I just discovered your channel a few weeks ago. After this video, I’m certain I won’t be driving in Malta! 😂 I hope you didn’t have to back down that road! 🙀
One thing I loved about Malta and Gozo was the urban exploration opportunities...there were tons of abandoned hotels and such. Had a scary moment there once when I moved a rock and an Algerian Whipsnake crawled from under it 😬
I used to stay at the Sea Bank Hotel not far from the Popeye Village. Comino used to be lovely when it wasn't so busy, but these days it's bonkers busy that it spoils the whole experience. We went 6 times after we had our honeymoon there 9 years ago, but haven't been since before the pandemic.
A blessed good day sir Gabe Wowww So nice Video On Popeyes Village Amazing Unique Place, to Visit with family and friends, and beautiful 😍 stone Historical buildings and beautiful landscapes, thank u so much for your wonderful walk around tour video in Malta Stay safe and Godbless from the Philippines 🇵🇭 sir Marvin 🙂👏👏👏♥️❤️🙏👏👏👏👍
Great to see this area of Malta again, shame you didn't get a nice blue sky day! There is a huge abandoned military base beyond that World War II bunker you saw called Fort Campbell, when I was there it was unprotected and you could just stroll around it (being careful of the glass and damaged roofs of course). The picture that you saw of Popeye Village that you thought was a village there before it became the film set was actually the original Popeye Village film set - I visited it with my family when I was a kid in the 1980's. Most of the original set didn't actually have an inside, it was just a front that they used for the outside scenes in the movie. What's there now has been built since as a theme park. Cool place though. Just watched the end and am wondering if you'll find them in the next episode, as you can tell I'm a little behind with your videos but catching up. 😃
In Malta in February, when it was battered by storms, visited the popeye village before storm, returned later in week to see a massive boulder had slid down rockface and landed on building, shame Popeye hadn't had his spinach that day...sure he would have hurled it out to sea....
Maltese is a fascinating language. I was reading up on the alphabet. Since there are so many Arabic sounds that can’t accurately be represented by the Roman alphabet, they had to get creative. It has changed a lot over the years. It is considered a Semitic language - The only Arabic language written in Roman script. Hypogeum sounds amazing! And what fun you could have buying shoes for one-time wear! Pink wingtips, perhaps? 😂 You could donate them afterwards. OMG That Popeye ear worm! Noo! 🙉 😂 I love your Malta content. Might even rewatch the 2019 vids.
I haven't watched the Popeye movie, but it used to be my favourite animation show during my childhood days, those were the time which I used to watch 10 pm show everyday with having a dinner.😅
Hi Gabriel, I find it interesting that there is still interest in the Popeye movie set after so many years. The cartoon is no longer in syndication so children can't even identify with the characters. Adults would be the only ones that could have a real interest because they were raised around this cartoon for around 50 years.
“What the heck am I doing”? Lol, oh no.. We never know where you will end up. I liked the Popeyes village. You should have bought a Popeyes cap and pipe, it would surely suit you.😊❤
Great adventure gabriel in rural Malta 😂😂 The ww2 pillbox you were very close to a hidden cove and the massive campell fort, well done with the Maltese words 😂😂
Hahaha, Hypogeum, literally means underground in Greek. Hypo - as in under andι geum from the greek γη or gaia, meaning earth. We use it all the time in modern greek, meaning basement of a building most of the time.
For your info, Xemxija is spelt as "Shem-shee-ah". Our language can be a little complicated for non-native speakers, but if you ask us we'll happily tell you how our towns are spelt :D
@@GabrielTravelerVideos Yes in America, cars 🚙 are mostly automatic rather than gears. I’ll love to one day drive a Tesla car even for a day because they’re totally different than normal cars. In a Tesla you start the car with a card rather than a key and also you can self drive it and interestingly there are no engines in them. Instead it’s all electrical charging. In reality you can put your shopping 🛍 in the front and back bonnet of the car because there are no engines.

That is cool to see Popeye Village all fixed up last, I've heard it was all run down and falling apart. Loving all the old ruins.
I went to Malta a couple of years ago. Popeye Village is good fun and you can take a dip in the sea from there.
Great movie history
See some green houses at 20:55…wonder if they’re growing some of that landrace goodness.

Hard to say if those railings were seasoned over time or intentionally given that vibe.
Another excellent video

Malta is a stunning, natural scenery for movies and i've seen them all, the ones you mentioned... Robin Williams as Popeye, iconic... 🙏✨✌

The water scenes for the movie were shot at the largest European infinity pool. Very unique place
Popeye village is a cool looking sea port village reminds me of Seaport Village in San Diego, California
Gosh it’s only June and it looks cold 🥶 especially when Gabriel is wearing a jacket 🧥
Gabriel: I want to explore it there..going in.
Malta: You can try.. 😄
Super cool.👍😊🤣🇲🇹
Outstanding Video !!!!🙌🏻
Surprising to see that old Popeye movie set there! That water sure is beautiful!
Never thought about going to Malta, might put on my list, but around 20 as I have so much on it already
Super interesting country, so much more than just beaches, well worth a visit.
@6:26. Xemxija is pronounced shem-shi-ya. In Maltese X =sh, j=y. Easy peasy!

Exactly. But it's pretty tricky for me with the stick shift on the other side. Getting used to it though.

When you get to Greece are you going to Rhodes? Yes it’s touristy, but it has a very historical heritage and beauty that is unique to Greece?

Mdina.
Victoria and the air raid shelter.

That’s weird that they require shoes 👞 to go in a cave. It doesn’t make sense. It’s not like sandals have football ⚽️ trainers with studs below them.
