Focussing on just carving I find is the best thing for me. Tricks are nice but a solid foundation of fluid motion will have your back when it's time to take things over the lip. Always rollin' always smilin'.

Thank you! Yes to all that! 60 yr old skater, been rolling since I was 9. The fear of injury haints me now, especially if I lay off for a while and then go for a sesh and everything is a little off. Battle the voices in my head but man, when I get pass them, break a sweat and start charging it a bit I feel rejuvenated. Aiming for another 10 years on transition and perhaps beer runs till I keel over.

You’re an inspiration mate! Your progression has been insane… if any ones allowed to chill for a bit and work on consistency and fun it’s you 👊 it amazes how you go for new tricks sometimes! I haven’t learnt anything for a few videos now. Just improving my overall skating and lines! I need to bite the bullet and learn some new stuff now tho 😬

I can completely relate to this. Just got back from a session where my confidence was no way near where it was before the Xmas break, mainly on dropping in. The verts I’d just got used to going down on were a mental and physical obstacle again due to having had 2 or 3 weeks off. Knees even felt wobbly at the top. A few patches of ice at the park didn’t help either! Like you, Jon, I’m also a climber, so I’m extra wary of trying not to get injured. A wrist injury from skating last year took me away from the climbing wall for over 2 months. I’m a 37 year old skater, started again in June after a more than 20 year hiatus. Just need to not be so hard on myself. I try and listen to my own mantra, “Just go slow, you ain’t going pro”😅

For me, I shift gears (from street to transition or vice versa) and work on something else, looking for any victory I can get. These victories and just making sure I’m skating help push me through. Good luck on your next visit to the 13 footer 👍👍

Your commitment is astounding Jon. I'm 54 and find the slams a bit harder to come back from. Outside life is always in my mind and an injury would jeopardise work/home. If it helps I skate a variety of shapes/sizes. That way I never hit that nagging doubt of "would I be better on this/that?" I simply know I'm the limiting factor not my set up . Keep it coming Jon, your content is ace!!!!

Echoing what others have said but your bag of tricks is already pretty vast so maybe an approach of just going to the skatepark to have fun (without needing to learn anything new) just linking together some new lines and enjoying the feeling of the tricks you've already got becoming more and more solid could be just as enjoyable? Obviously it's less easy to generate specific "content" without a goal in mind but at this point your general musings on skateboarding provide entertainment enough whether it's new or old tricks! One thing that would motivate me more personally in my skating is having more opportunities to skate socially, the deserted skatepark is a great place to learn stuff, but stoke and confidence definitely go hand in hand with the presence of like minded individuals to encourage you to steeze out the tricks you already have making them feel super solid and boosting confidence just as much but with less bails! I think climbing is a great complimentary sport and for sure the injuries can hamper climbing ability. That said I find it great for recovery doing easy climbs and getting the joints going! Anyway, crisis in confidence is one thing, but getting cocky and doing yourself a mischief is worse in my opinion! I'm less annoyed on the days I didn't go for something than the days I did and now have to take a two week break!

Thanks for posting Jon! I appreciate all of the videos you put up.
I have been suffering from the "yips" lately as well. Unfortunately being unsure about my skating and being timid led to me taking a slam that resulted in an injury that required elbow surgery. I'm recovering now, and plan to be back on my board by May.
Once I get back, I plan on keeping things simple, skating with more confidence, and not beating myself up too much to get back where I was! Keep up the great work!

Way to go Jon! Getting over trauma from slams is hard. Especially as you get older and it takes longer to heal. I love how you show the bails and slams along with the triumphs. I'll have to admit sometimes I resort to some liquid courage in the form of a few pints😂. Keep it up you're doing great!!!

I am so identified with this video, thanks Jon ! I have been seriously injured during last second half of 2022, herniated disk producing unbearable sciatica pain. For several months it was difficult just to feed or go for a pee, I really thought skateboarding and surfing was finish for ever. Went through surgery late November and came back to normal life. I am skating again but confidence has gone, particularly in medium and high transitions. Just getting a bit of my previous level on my 2 ft backyard micro-ramp. But still fighting !!

Went for a skate today after about 6 months off (life etc.). complete loss of confidence... it sucked.
I didn't pad up today, which I think may have been a factor. I never actually fall, always runout, but having the pads I think might be "strap on confidence".
Came here for some words of inspiration with this video. Thanks!

I can't rip airs anymore, but I still love hearing my wheels scorch the pavement! cheers bud!

what ive found that helped for me was literally just riding my board more, ride to the grocery, ride to school, ride to park etc. Also I would play games of SKATE with my friends even though they were way better then me id just do my simple tricks which got me dialed in and warmed up, then maybe throw a kickflip or some pop shuvs which lead to me landing my first kickflip and other tricks! You can try other skateparks aswell which will have obstacles you maybe aren't used too! good luck brotha stay strong and have fun! :)

Boster of a video Jon! Been having the same feelings myself lately with the mental side, felt like I've been getting worse rather than better and I've lost so many tricks in the last 6 months.
Climbed myself for quite a while until I went to Swanage when me and my climbing partner stopped up until 2am drinking at the campsite, we went out the next morning with intense beer fear and had a few really spicy climbs(firstb two) with crumbling rock and not the best warm up routes. It scared my partner enough for him to give up and that was the last time I climbed in 2019. Really miss climbing to be honest, went and climbed all over the UK and in other countries, but being a partner sport made going impossible. Part of the reason I took up skating again.
This can work in any order.
    Re-learn a trick
    Master it
    Loose an old trick
    🤣

Hi Jon, great video. I'm in a similar place, have had a few injuries, dislocated shoulder, torn rotator cuff, two cracked front teeth and then in November I fractured a bone in my wrist and needed surgery to insert a screw into it. I'm now busy relearning tricks. Also at age 48 approaching 49 I'm putting more focus on "lower risk" tricks, lines and just trying to do them better, more consistent and with more style. And just having a fun skate. I've yet to skate the higher coping at my local park as this is how I ended up with the broken wrist. Confidence has definitely been knocked, but its more about self preservation and being able to do this for a s long as possible!!!!!!

John what a good and honest video and mate you've gone sooo insanely fast that it feels like your world's away from where you started.
I definitely have the anxiety of injuries. Talked about it with some mates the other day but the thing is; I know so many people who get injured doing 'normal stuff, speedskating, surfing, biking, soccer etc. There's always a risk even in the 'safe stuff'.
You've actually been an inspiration in deciding that I might as well do all the things that I like and accept the risks from those sports instead of holding back and still have the risk of injury.
One more thing. I've always thought that it would be so cool if you did an 'expert looking back series' where you'd re do all the tricks that most mortals are still struggling with🙋🏼. With extra focus on details, flow and style. (I know you've done some off those and that it would probably be very boring for you but still😅)
Keep up the stoke and let's be honest if you changed this to a climbing channel.... With you're stoke, all of us would be climbing in no time😂

    • @JonBishopSkate
      @JonBishopSkate  Год назад

      Yeah dude, spot on !!
I made all sorts of excuses not to skate, and not to go climbing. I was wrong, there are no excuses, you nailed it here, could break my wrist falling up the stairs, could roll me ankle walking off a curb!
I would argue soccer is just as dangerous as skating having done both? I love that on your normal activity list is speed skating 😂

Odd coincidence... I've been going through exactly the same thing. I'd just got Rock Fakies & Rock n rolls on my mini last year but then had a bad slam and it totally knocked my confidence. Didn't do anything for 6 months at least. I'm back on it and getting Rock fakies and slashes at home but just cant stay on at the skate park, I keep stepping off needlessly. I'd been going once a week but just couldn't do it. It had gotten so frustrating that I'd decided that it was about time I gave up. I'm 58 this month so I should just leave it. But then I though NO, F*CK THAT! So I went back to Just Ramps and intentionally didn't do Rock Fakies. I've been practicing tail stalls (taps), improving my frontside 180's, cleaning up my drop ins, seeing how far I can get up the bigger transitions, or just taking one of my pump track boards or surf skates along and messing around. It's given me a fresh lease of life, just rolling around and enjoying myself without any self induced pressure 😎. Keep up the good work fella, your videos are always a joy to watch. 🤙
