UPDATE: As of December 18, 2022 River has been taken in by a foster which will allow Amber more time to potentially find her a better fur-ever home! Thank you to everyone for your incredible support.
Also, thank you for addressing this and thank Amber for allowing you to speak for her. I've been in a similar situation, it was a heartbreaking decision but I had to rehome. I invite everyone who chooses to comment to be kind and hold space for Amber because this is one of the hardest things she will go through.
It’s a heartbreaking decision because pets are family and I’m sure Amber is being a very responsible pet parent. She is doing what’s best for River. This is a catch up video for me. So it answered my question about what happened and hopefully River has found a forever home. My heart goes out to Amber.
My heart goes out to Amber and River. No matter what the circumstance it is heartbreaking saying goodbye to a very loyal furry friend. You're such a good friend to her. God bless both of you and all those who live a van life.
I 100% agree with all of this. Have just experienced this with a dog I recently found in the desert. Everyone THINKS that it would be SO romantic to have a dog while living on the road in a van. But… as you explain… there are MANY more elements than just the romanticism of having a dog.
Oh dear, my heart goes out to Amber and River. Prayers your way 💛💛💛🙏🏼🙏🏼🙏🏼all I know is that we cannot judge. Love to you Amber and River 😢 and you Matt are a very good friend 😭
Thank you for putting this out there Matthew. I hope someone close steps up and takes River home to a good loving forever home. Amber, sending you giant hugs and understanding and just letting you know you are doing the best you can for yourself and for River.
We travel full time with a large dog and cat in a 22 foot travel trailer. I agree with you on this subject 100%! We are retired but if we had jobs that removed us from the RV for work we couldn’t live this lifestyle.
Amber is absolutely doing the right thing for River, especially with the breed mix, Rive needs room to run and play, and being somewhat border collie, something to corral. You’re a good friend Matthew.
😢 oh no. Thank you for addressing this and reminding everyone that there are extremely difficult times. Sending positive vibes to Amber that it all works out.
I’m glad you did this video and urge people to think before they do this with a dog and a van. Please don’t take River to a kill shelter or any shelter. Take the time necessary to find a proper home 😢. This might not be popular but I have zero tolerance on this subject. My 2nd dog just passed and I would do Anything for my animals.
Oh my heart aches for Amber. I know that has got to be such a terrible weight on her. Thank you for making this video. Amber if you read this, I am so very sorry you and River are going through this. I hope she gets adopted quickly, she seems like a really sweet pup. Big hugs
My heart is breaking for Amber and River. Whilst the informative nature of the video was great, I'm sure finding River a fantastic home with someone you both have met is figuring substantially in this vlog, you're a good friend Matt. Good luck Amber, I hope you find your fur baby the home she deserves and Matt please keep us crazy animal owners posted xx
Thank you Matt for letting us know what’s going on. You’re an awesome friend. Sending lots of positive vibes, hugs & love to Amber and River. They’ll both be in my prayers ❤️
The simple fact is dogs are a responsibly. I was a drug addict living a messy life. Yet my dogs are what saved me. I chose to accept the responsibility to care for them. I made sacrifices to keep my dogs safe. I just had to put down my oldest dog last week. Training is extremely important and a must. Training isn't just the dog it's the owner as well. It's simply a matter of what's more important to you. For me it was my dogs. She's definitely making a good choice. Only time will tell if it's the right one.
Wishing River finds his forever home asap, thank you for addressing this in such a thoughtful and respectful way but also in a straightforward way, people really do need to think long and hard about having pets with this lifestyle (or any lifestyle really!). Sending love to Amber, I know it must be heartbreaking for her. ❤️❤️❤️
😢 Thank you Matt for addressing this. As a dog Mom, makes me sad, of course. But River will be happier with some place to run. Even my 3 legged boxer runs. 🤗 to Amber and River.
Just in case someone misses this video, please repeat the need for a new home for River everyday. I wish I could take her. I hate to see an animal given up to the humane society. Yes, they are safe and fed but the poor thing will be confused and sad and ideally should be learning to bond with her new human. No judgement Amber. I'm sure you would rather do anything but this. I just hope someone steps up before the 19th. God bless.
Awe. This really pulls on my heartstrings. I know how difficult it is to rehome a beloved family pet. Thank you Matthew for posting this video. I’m so so sorry that Amber is going through this. I hope someone is able to adopt River, rather than him going to the pound. 😢
My heart goes out to Amber at this time. The hardest thing for me to do would be to admit that my home is not the best place for the animal I love. I would add that everything you said is true about getting a dog, regardless of where you live. Too may times I have see people with medium or large breed dogs in small apartments, where the dog spends 10 hours a day in a crate because the owner had to go to work. That is no life for a dog. Hugs to all.
Constant companionship creates separation anxiety. They need companionship, but also need to feel confident and independent. There are tons of "covid dogs" being given up right now because people got them when covid hit and they were home all day. Now back to work and the dogs suffer because they now have separation anxiety. I agree with idea that spending all day in a crate is not a great life for a dog, but I don't like the common thought that large dogs shouldn't be in small apartments. I have been a dog parent for over 20 years. I used to live in a house with a yard, and felt terrible having to move to a small apartment with 2 large dogs... because society says it is bad. The reality is that my dogs quality of life became sooooo much better when we moved into a small apartment. When I lived in a house, there would be mornings or times that i'd just open the door and let them in the fenced yard to go to the bathroom or hang out. I can't do that anymore. My current dog has to be taken out and walked multiple times a day or taken to the dog park, meaning that there is way less of a chance I can become a complacent dog owner. Also, In my opinion, there is a lot less of a chance a dog will develop fear based aggression living a city/apartment lifestyle with the constant socialization. I've also set up cameras to watch my dog while i'm at work. He sleeps on the couch 80% of the time... same as he does when i'm home. If we lived in a mansion, he would not be walking into the bathroom to take a shower, then going into the huge kitchen to make a stir fry, then going to the home theater to watch a movie, then going into our gym to work out... he'd be sleeping on the couch or chewing a bone.
I'm a retired 78 year old and have a small service dog. I agree with what you had to say about having a dog is like like having a toddler. Only because my dog is a service dog (and has saved my life), he is and can be with me at all times. The only place he can't go is on the surgery floor when I was there for some time. If I did do van life I would have him with, however it is a big responsibility. Especially when you can't take them with you in extreme weather. Here in my state we have extreme Summers and very cold winters. And unfortunately people have left their pets in the car and have lost their dogs as a result. I've often wondered what they do with the animals in extreme weather when they can't take them. Thank you for informing us about the facts of having a dog in Van life. Also it was nice to hear that you do have to work even when living in a van. Thank you for the informative video I really appreciated it.
This vlog has definitely come from a place of compassion which is very honourable and is one of the reasons I call Matthew my friend!💖 I'm certain River will find a new home because she's absolutely gorgeous and I send my sympathies to Amber because having to make these decisions are not easy and pull on our heartstrings but in the end all will be well!💖
Sad, sad situation and I wish Amber - and River - all the best with a positive outcome. Although it is, as you say, a relatively obvious thing to consider how things will work out with animals in this lifestyle, you are 100% correct in bringing it up as not being deeply thought through. I can say that applied to me, too. I took my last, smaller and older dog camping and he was quiet and low energy and easy to have along for the ride. After his passing I now have a slightly bigger, much younger and much higher energy dog and it is a WHOLE DIFFERENT BALLGAME! Campsites were a no go because of his excitement and barking at other dogs and keeping him occupied in the camper during the day in wet weather wasn’t easy. Noises at night set him barking. People passing by the camper the same. These things are getting better with repetition but leaving him in the camper while I get groceries etc is about the limit - anything longer I wouldn’t want to consider. Even at home he is crate trained and is fine in his crate for a few hours but he would get ‘into things’ and possibly be a hazard to himself and the house contents in a free run situation, whereas my previous dog would just fall asleep on the couch and I’d often have to wake him up when I came in. So that’s another thought - even if it’s working with your current dog, doesn’t mean it will with the next one. I’m glad you brought this up as there are a lot of channels that make this situation seem easy and the ‘norm’ to travel and live with a dog without really explaining why it DOES work for them but might not for you. Some are obvious in that they are with their dog 24/7 (see Chrome and Foresty) but others seem to have a dog come and go without explanation so I can only assume they have a home-base nearby with someone to care for the dog? Then there’s finding that perfect climate you mentioned… Anyway all in my thoughts on this one and really hoping for the best possible outcome.
You've perfectly outlined why I don't have a dog. Would love one like your first dog, but a dog like your current one would drive me NUTS. Having an animal companion is wonderful, but your companion shouldn't be a complete hindrance to things you want to do in your life, or a danger to himself or others. I will say that training is super important with dogs, but most people just don't want to make the effort, and that's another big problem. I would do it, so maybe someday....but yeah, my dog will be super well trained or I won't have a dog. It sometimes puzzles me what fussy pets they are. Cats seem much more psychologically complex than many dogs, yet they are so easy-going by comparison--for the most part. My cats never mind fireworks, for example. But I log into NextDoor or Facebook on July 4th or New Year's and all I see are endless threads about peoples' dogs literally having fainting fits, heart attacks, needing meds--over fireworks. Dang.
I’m so sorry to hear that Amber and River have been struggling. I think lots of animal lovers watch your channel, so we get it. River is a sweet adorable dog and she will no doubt find a good home. I hope she finds a WONDERFUL home, in fact. But it will be a heartache for Amber for awhile. It sounds like she is doing the best thing for River, despite how much it hurts. All the best to both of them.
Matt, I was going to order some salt for this, but no need. I completely understand and can only offer Amber and River my best hopes and a positive outcome for them. I sincerely wish I were in a position to help (Waterloo, Ontario is not close by). I suspect many viewers have the same hopes. There are good homes and I'll forward this video to my people. Hoping for the best.
That is so very sad our hearts go out to Amber and poor River hoping he finds a loving new forever home soon and Amber can slowly rebuild her life and her van....you are a beautiful dear friend to her Matthew lots of love from two fans in the UK
I am a vanlifer from NY, now in Arizona with my dog! And i will say, it's allot of work! Vanlife is not easy! It's allot of inconvenience and cleaning, etc... And my dog is a pitbull mix, she is allot of work and has anxiety! So it's very hard at times, but I love her! Vanlife is so rewarding! But not always so easy! So, be warned if wanting to do this!
Thx for the video. Gotta remember that Amber is 1 person and 1 situation. I live in Alberta, I have a dog & am living in a vehicle, by choice so I would like to offer my opinion graciously. Hot environments are dangerous for animals in a vehicle. Cold environments also can be dangerous for animals in a vehicle. Same goes with children in the same situation. I work casual in the winter and when I work, the dog goes to daycare. Everyday, regardless of work or not that day, we go for a hike & up to 2x daily to a dog park. My dog needs to run and loves the interaction with other dogs. One's main focus is his comfort and happiness. I work in the spring, summer & fall and am able to save for our trips around Alberta as well. It's very sad Amber is going thru this and my heart breaks for her. Amber, don't blame yourself, chalk it up to a learning curve and I'll be praying for your sweet pup that a good home is found. Keeping you in my prayers.
You are a very good friend to Amber & to River. This is a pet parents worst nightmare, yet there is not always a way that it might be avoided. The mix that River is are high energy but wonderful family members. My heart goes out to Amber. I can only imagine how hard it was for you to make this vlog
OMGosh my heart goes out to Amber, plz give her a big hug. I wish my landlord allowed dogs but she don't. I am crying for her. Matt thank you for being such a good friend. God bless
Matt, all of these things you are saying makes sense, and while, it's sad for both of them if River has to be re-homed, it makes sense for the health and well-being for both of them. People are too opinionated and should try the loving and understanding approach instead of being judgemental. Thanks for being such a great friend to Amber. Take care!
Thank you so very much for addressing and getting the education out there for those who may need to know about our fur babies. Amber is making a very loving decision for River and I applaud her for that. I also know how difficult that decision is to make. But it is a very responsible and loving one. Being 62 and a retired animal Control Officer I have seen many many different outcomes that our pets have to ultimately deal with. I also have been blessed with many fur babies by my side during my life. All of whom have been rescues in one compacity or another. Before I became an animal Control officer with the police department I worked in shelters and with vets as well as kennels (for boarding or doggie daycare). I became an officer to educate the public and save any animals that I could... which included all different kinds of wildlife, animal hoarding situations, drug busts and my favorite returning fur babies that have lost their way home❤️. Basically I was going to save the world lol. I got in trouble a few times due to not writing enough tickets... but I believe always to actually talk with people and educate people. Everyone's situation is different and does not warrant judgment! Best believe I was back checking up and seeing if the situation was better or if I actually needed to take any further action. I see in the comments so so many wonderful people who are not judging Amber but sending love her way❤️. I do not know if there is doggie daycare available where you guys live. If so I know it may be very expensive. That was an option that I have thought of. Matthew you are a wonderful friend to Amber and River! I know she appreciates your friendship so very much as that comes through the videos you both make. I have throughly enjoyed your videos since chrome showcased your van on his channel. Thank you so very much for all your hard work and loving soul. You are appreciated! Thank you to Amber as well for sharing her and River's journey together. As always...Peace love and light to ALL from Kansas. ✌️❤️☀️🌻 p.s. and thank you for your patience this was a little long winded 😂
Thank you for assisting Amber with getting this info out. Your a good friend. This is heartbreaking, I know, for Amber. I pray her sweet dog finds an excellent loving home where she/he can run free.
Dear Cat man bless you. I know seeing Amber in such difficulty is hard enough but to know this little life, River needs more is truly an act of kindness. I will ask the Creator to watch out for all of you. Again Bless You Both.❄️💜❄️
Amber 🤗 I feel for you. Rehoming is so hard. My heart goes out to you and River. This is the right and selfless thing to do. I wish I could give you a big hug. You'll make it through. ❤️
Thank you, Matt, for being the person that you are. A loyal friend picking up the heavy load of the heartbreak Amber is going through. I watched it on TV last night, agreeing with everything said, and also knowing what Amber is going through. My heart goes out to both of you and River, too. I wish a speedy happy ending to the 3 of you. ❤️❤️🩹❤
The love and respect you give to All is so important We appreciate you so much and plz if we can find River and wonderful home let's do it. So proud of Amber acknowledging this the health and happiness of River is most important❣ ❤🤗❤
Poor Amber... I can't imagine the anxiety and emotional pain she is going through with re-homing River. My heart cries for her, what a heartbreaking thing to go through. I am praying for both of them. Thank you for being her friend, thank God for you. Support is SO important for her right now❤ God Bless you, Matt🙏🏼
Very very well spoken brother 👌🏼 My heart goes out to amber completely I actually had to do the same in the beginning of vanlife with my boy a few years ago he was a Pitbull/Lab and unfortunately I could not let him go through all the sitting in basically one spot for hours in the heat or the cold and of course all the people bugging him through the window and many other thing like you mentioned needless to say it was A lot to deal with it was the most heart breaking thing I’ve ever done in my life 😭 having had him since a newborn pup and after 3-4 years I just couldn’t put him through that anymore Amber is doing the right thing and sometimes the hardest thing is the best for both of them I love river and every doggy I ever met but living in a van with one is a totally different world much love to you all and I hope it all works out for the best ❤️
Such heartbreaking news 💔 😢 I am so glad that Amber is strong enough to make this very difficult decision for River's life going forward. Sending lots of love for them both! Hugs Valerie ❤ 🍁👵🐶🇨🇦
I am so sorry for Amber and River. I know that Amber tries very hard to take River out for walks and running time. Also, I know she was trying so hard to be there for River… I know she is a caring, loving person who loved River…. I hope everything works out for them both. Matt, thank you for bringing this up. You are a good friend!
This is an amazing video, Matt. So well said. My husband (Cardkast) and I both work from home, have no kids, and got a dog in April, and she’s about as much as we can handle. We LOVE her but holy shit did it flip our lives upside down. I really love you for posting this; it needs to be said. Thank you, Matt and best to River and Ambers broken heart 💔 ❤️
My heart goes out to Amber and River and you. You're a good friend for reaching out to everyone here in the community. This is the reason I never moved into my van was because of my dog Jack . I wasn't financially in a position to do so up until recently. I'm now receiving a disability pension and I'm debt free as well. So I never have to leave my dog Jack in my van for extended periods of time. I know how fortunate I am and I'm so grateful that I get to spend my days with my awesome pup. If I wanted to move into my van full-time I could. Also my dog is also 7 and is as active as I am. We are together 24/7. I live with my Dad so I have so much freedom. This video is showing me really how fortunate I really am. So thank you for that Matt Another suggestion for anyone who wants to do vanlife with a pet is have more than one heat source. I've actually been looking at getting a mini wood stove. Something you might consider in your van as well Matt. Thank you for sharing this video Matt
Tell Amber so sorry for her loss 😢. It is so hard rehoming. But your suggestions are spot on. This is exactly why I got my remote job and plan to 'chase 70' out on public land and not in the city. Give Amber one of my long awkward hugs and let her know my thoughts are with her.
My prayers are with you all. Your amazing, in making this video. Everything you brought up is the truth. Thank you for bringing this to the Frontline..
Excellent video for people thinking of van life, RV life etc. and pets. You are right, age with the energy level and genetic breed characteristics should be thought about. River's breed genetic make up says energy energy energy . ... .also ones own energy level should also be considered regardless if living in a van or sticks and bricks... Grooming is a good point as well. Think on the care of grooming for many breeds as well. My heart goes out to Amber ..
Amber, your making the best decision for River, think of how positive it will be for River to have a large yard and possibly another fur friend to live and play with so he is never alone. Blessings to you and River what ever you deside.
Can someone in their area foster River during the winter months? that would be the best I think, I know down here were I live they do that when pet owners get sick....It would be nice because then Amber gets to visit and River is safe......Just a thought.
nice suggestion but really that just kicks the problem down the road. Hot weather in the summer and the need to be away from the van for work really does limit Amber's choices. I immediately thought doggy day care, but again... that would not really fix the root issue. Really hard and sad choice for Amber.
Do you guys have doggie daycare up there? It would be a good way for River to socialize and get all that energy out. I don't know how much it would cost up there but that could be the perfect option for Amber to keep River and for River to get everything she needs. If not, then Amber is 100% doing the right thing. I would only warn against re-homing her yourselves. Unless you know the person, you never know how that will end up. A lot of dog fighting rings find free re-homing dogs to use for "practice." I would go thru the Humane Society because they have a system of making sure the dogs go to the right home.
I dont often read the channel description, especially if they are too long. But I enjoy your content, and so I decided to read through it. The back story is clearly visible in all of your videos and wish you all the best.
My heart goes out to Amber & River. This is a very hard situation for both. I'm positive River will find a new home that will give her what she needs. Amber should be commended for her efforts to care for River in the best way possible. Thanks Matthew for sharing this and making us aware.
I know how difficult it is to have to find another home for an animal you care about. My situation was a bit different as it was a neighbor's cat. They moved and left him. I couldn't afford to have it treated in order to be able to bring him into my home. I had other cats at that time and I didn't want them to be affected. I ended up taking him to the humane society. I know that it is much harder for Amber since she has had River for quite some time. I've also had to have animals that I've had for years put to sleep. It's difficult to have to let an animal that you are responsible for go! Amber, you are doing the best for River and I understand and appreciate your sacrifice.
My heart❤️ goes out to both Amber and River!!! I hope after this, they will be able to see each other once in a while! That their friendship continues! They are going to miss each other, so much! ❤️❤️❤️. I Bless both Amber and River!
Thank you Mathew for putting this out there. Amber must be heartbroken but it’ll all work out for her and River. Mathew you are a terrific friend. Be safe
Matt you are a great friend to Amber I know she appreciates you. A big thank you for handling this issue with great compasion. I wish for River to have a wonderful new home and Amber is able to learn and move forward from this issue. Matt you and Amber are great people and responsible people. This is a great channel and I wish the best for you Amber and River.
My aunt lives in a van and 6 months out of the year her dog stays with us for the 6 months to help her. It’s so important to have a backup plan thank you for explaining
I’m so, so sorry for dear Amber. What a sad, distressing situation for her and River and you too Matthew. We all know you will make sure River is taken very god care of. Poor Amber will suffer terrible grief over Christmas. Please Matt, tell her many of us understand what she is going through….. I became homeless after my divorce and had to let go of my beloved welsh border collie Seren.. (Welsh for Star). Im sending Amber all my prayers and love, she is a sweet lady and I wish this was not happening to her, it’s heartbreaking.
So glad you brought this up. I have two small dogs and I've been living in a van for 3 years. I have spent the time and money to make sure they are comfortable. I've installed an ac and generator specifically for them. They are never left alone for more than 25 minutes. I live on my VA funds and money is tight and I would love to work but unless it could be an online job it's a no go. They are my number one priority. If I have a Dr appt or a mechanic appt., I get a hotel room. It makes me angry when I see dogs suffering. Personally my two lil ones LOVE van life. If we do visit family, my dogs run to the van they prefer it...
I’m so screwed when I loose my house I have a Weimaraner but she’s extremely well trained, mortgage life is super tuff being disabled but we will survive. Best of luck to River on his new journey maybe with some luck he lands on a farm. Best wishes to Amber on this heartbreaking decision
That's a really hard decision to make. But in the end you have to do whats best for the animal. Thanks for the candor. I myself have only part timed (6-8 months of the year off grid in BC out of the van and trailer) I used to have three buddies that would come with us. 2 big cats 1 smol dog. Having to micromanage the health and safety of the crew while doing the simplest of things like, going into walmart in Cranbrook during the summer for supplies... That meant either someone staying in the van to keep the ac running or using the onstart we had installed JUST FOR THE PETS to keep the AC running in 15 minute increments. Built a bed in the back JUST FOR THE PETS. It wasn't big enough to hold people... Kept bags of bedding and pet clothes in the van at all times, just in case. But, being vanners and travelers our crew got to travel the entire country a few times. You can hear them and see them in almost all of my old videos. I'd do it all again if I could have them back. I just had to send the last one over the rainbow bridge a week ago due to kitty kidney failure. He was 18. They all lived to wipe old ages. I miss them all terribly. Amber, if you are out there reading this. You are doing the right thing.
Imagine being at work on a hot day (unable to stop work, go outside & check on your pet every 5-10 minutes) and the A/C goes off! You hear about children left in cars... You hear about pets left in vehicles... It takes only minutes for a vehicle to overheat and... I'm sure someone mentioned this below but it seems a bit much to read all comments to be sure. So, just a thought. Cold (heater goes off) is just as awful, and either, both can cause great, great suffering, misery to pets and pet owners.
As a car camping wannabe with a 7 year old Pit, I’ve thought it would be good to bring her along for companionship and protection, but your video is a good reminder of considerations for living full time in a vehicle with a dog. I am sad for Amber and River, but she’s making the right decision and I’m sure River will find another home quickly. Sending strength and support to Amber. 💞
My heart goes out to Amber and River.( this is to Amber Matt) no matter what Amber if you have to give him up now is the time, don't wait he's 1 yrs. I know woman you have fell in love with him and this is going to be heart wrenching but I've been there, and my story may be somewhat different, Do what's best for you AND River. He will always remember you always and when your thinking of him he will be thinking of you, they have a 6 sense, and tell him you miss him but to know life has it's challenges, and hell understand what the challenges were, and the reason why he isn't with you,but he'll know he's always in your heart. I hope this helps you Amber. Love and Hugs to you Amber.
Im in the U.S. so I really can’t help relocating River but I so feel for Amber….having to give up a beloved pet is heartbreaking….it’s a sad situation all around….hopefully River can find a new good home….I always wondered how she was managing ….having a dog of that size in that lifestyle left me scratching my head. Maybe tell Amber, if she hasn’t thought of it, to consider fostering River to someone until a more suitable home can be found. Sending positive thoughts for a good resolution to the situation….You’re a good friend Matt and a responsible custodian of “Van life” in putting this out there for those considering their options. Be well.
Hugs to them both, I am sorry she has to find a new home for River. I get the feeling she truly loves her dog. But your point of making an informed decision about vanlife and animals is on point. We need to not only decide if it’s right but if it’s right for the animals personally, size and such.
Ugh. Soul sick. Amber and River are etched in my heart now. Lots of thoughts and feelings on this subject as someone who became homeless with 2 senior pups and only a pickup truck to shelter in. All the counselors & agencies I went to for help insisted I re-home my pups. I couldn't conceive it for the 16-year old pup. At all. So I got no help with shelter or housing. We suffered a lot in the truck even though we were in sunny San Diego, California. It was chaotic, stressful on top of the trauma of becoming homeless. Yet in all the difficult, darkest moments, that's all they ended up being. Moments that happened, then passed. The positive sides of keeping my dogs (while buried in a mountain of shame) was that we were still together, 'The Sheriff' kept me and Swoony safe from bad guys, they still played & acted silly, they guarded the truck during all kinds of appointments, and they remained my purpose for living during a horrific period. For all the reasons Matt mentioned as well as the ones in my circumstances, re-homing River sounds like literally the best possible gift of life Amber can give to both him AND herself. Perhaps a pup can be had in her vanlife, just not River, and maybe just not right now. Amber, to help relieve the pain, please put this on the top of your mind, unless you find some kind of pet support programs that help keep pets and people together, re-homing him is an eternal gift to him. Just him. He'll love you forever no matter. The biggest wrap-around hugs to Amber, River and Matt. And little pat-pat spankies for the cats. ♥
Stay strong Amber ❤ you're doing the right thing for you and River. I know it will be heartbreaking to say goodbye. Just think when she gets her new home, she can run 100 mph in a yard. I'm sure she'll be fine. Sending love. you're a good friend Matt ❤
Awwww I feel so bad for Amber and River breaks my heart for them both💔😭 prayers for a wonderful subscriber to adopt River and give her a loving home🙏❤️🙏
UPDATE: As of December 18, 2022 River has been taken in by a foster which will allow Amber more time to potentially find her a better fur-ever home! Thank you to everyone for your incredible support.
That is wonderful news❤️ thank you for keeping us updated.
Thank you for the update, Matt!! I’m sure Amber is both crushed and relieved but I’m happy for her ❤️
That is good news especially with this really cold weather we’re having now in Calgary. Thanks for the update Matt
💝 Excellent news. Hugs to Amber.
That's great news, hoping River finds his forever home, but how wonderful to have a foster home in the meantime ❤️❤️❤️
This will have a great outcome. River is quite active and will be happier rehomed. Amber is making the right and best decision for her pet.❤
I 100% agree with all of this. Have just experienced this with a dog I recently found in the desert. Everyone THINKS that it would be SO romantic to have a dog while living on the road in a van. But… as you explain… there are MANY more elements than just the romanticism of having a dog.
Thanks for your input Chad, I appreciate that. Sorry you had to experience it first hand, hope everything worked out for the best.
I'm hoping whomever adopts River will allow Amber to visit this precious pup!
You’re such a good friend Matt. I know Amber appreciates that (as we🍀all do). Thank you for handling this with sensitivity and compassion.💞💞💞
As an animal advocate, this is a timely and much needed message, and not only for vanlife, but anyone no matter the life situation.
And that is the difference. You can take your dog and cat out anytime. She's at work all day. Dog is confined and young pup. Needs room to be a pup.
Amber is making the best possible decision for River. I'm sure her heart is breaking though. Sending hugs.
My heart goes out to Amber and River. Such a hard decision to make, but it does sound like it is the best one for River.
Great job addressing this. It does need to be shared. Heart goes out to Amber. She’s doing the right thing. This will be best for River.
You have to learn and live life
Stay strong amber you got this
Love you all Mathew keep up the great work Amber just remember all will be good 🎉
Please tell Amber she is in our thoughts and prayers? You are a standup guy, Matt. I wish River the very best. Love, from California.
Matthew... you sure are a very good friend to Amber. You are doing what friends do..I respect your loyalty.
Love that you are helping Amber and River. Just know that you are doing the best for River. ❤❤
Best wishes for Amber and River, so sorry this is how it has to be but things change, things come up. And thank you for helping with this 💜
That is so very sad our hearts go out to Amber and poor River hoping he finds a loving new forever home soon and Amber can slowly rebuild her life and her van....you are a beautiful dear friend to her Matthew lots of love from two fans in the UK
Amber is making the right decision for River no matter how difficult. Sometimes the hardest decisions are the best ones.
How sad for Amber. I know how much she loves River and fortunately she loves River enough to do the best thing. Give her a big hug for me.
sorry for Amber, we understand, hope River finds a good home
OMGosh my heart goes out to Amber, plz give her a big hug. I wish my landlord allowed dogs but she don't. I am crying for her. Matt thank you for being such a good friend. God bless
what a compassionate video
Very very well spoken brother 👌🏼
My heart goes out to amber completely I actually had to do the same in the beginning of vanlife with my boy a few years ago he was a Pitbull/Lab and unfortunately I could not let him go through all the sitting in basically one spot for hours in the heat or the cold and of course all the people bugging him through the window and many other thing like you mentioned needless to say it was A lot to deal with it was the most heart breaking thing I’ve ever done in my life 😭 having had him since a newborn pup and after 3-4 years I just couldn’t put him through that anymore
Amber is doing the right thing and sometimes the hardest thing is the best for both of them I love river and every doggy I ever met but living in a van with one is a totally different world much love to you all and I hope it all works out for the best ❤️
Such heartbreaking news 💔 😢
I am so glad that Amber is strong enough to make this very difficult decision for River's life going forward. Sending lots of love for them both!
Hugs Valerie ❤
🍁👵🐶🇨🇦
What a good guy, human, and friend you are !
Praying for all concerned, & the best possible outcome. 🙏
So thank you for that Matt
Another suggestion for anyone who wants to do vanlife with a pet is have more than one heat source.
My heart is breaking for both of them. ❤💔
Thanks Matthew for this video. Yes to hard to make. Amber sweet Amber this is such a difficult situation all my love to you. ❤❤
She is a giant of a person 👍🏻🍀 thinking not of herself !
Poor Amber, she will be very sad, but she will feel better when River has a beautiful new home.
OMG Matt, this breaks my heart for Amber and especially River 😢
If only I’m near you, i would look out for Amber and River and open my home for River
Amber, your making the best decision for River, think of how positive it will be for River to have a large yard and possibly another fur friend to live and play with so he is never alone. Blessings to you and River what ever you deside.
Having a dog is like having a toddler.
Thank you for bringing this subject up. My heart goes out to Amber. It is a harsh reality and those thinking of vanlife should know.
So sorry Amber is going through this, its heartbreaking to have to give up a pet , I hope things work out for both of them .
Heartbreaking and stressful situation for Amber. Shows her wisdom and heart to make this difficult but right decision.....fo both of them.
Thank you Mathew for putting this out there. Amber must be heartbroken but it’ll all work out for her and River. Mathew you are a terrific friend. Be safe
My heart breaks for Amber. I'm sure this is very hard on her.
Hugs to Amber and River. I have had to rehome a pet before and I know how difficult of a decision it is 💔
Matt you are a great friend to Amber I know she appreciates you.
A hard but very necessary video to make. I hope River finds a soft place to land. 🤗
Yes. All these things MUST be considered
My heart goes out to Amber having to do this. My step father had to do that after my mum died as he couldn’t care for it anymore. Love to you Amber xx
Ugh.
